BACKGROUND: The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a collection of heritable connective tissue disorders. Local anesthetic resistance is commonly reported by patients with EDS, but there is little clinical evidence to support this finding. We hypothesized that patients with EDS would have increased anesthetic resistance using lidocaine compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: An interventional study design was used. Participants (total N=135: EDS n=91, healthy n=44) completed a series of sensation tests using a standardized 10 g monofilament following subcutaneous injection with saline or lido

The aim of this study was to examine how far Goodman's addictive disorder criteria were met by individuals with eating disorders according to subtypes. The study provided a cross-sectional comparison among three samples of eating disorders [restricting anorexia nervosa (R-AN), N = 68; purging anorexia nervosa (P-AN), N = 42; and bulimia nervosa (BN), N = 66], a sample of substance-related disorders (SRDs, N = 48) and a sample of matched controls (N = 201). Diagnosis of addictive disorder was made following Goodman's criteria. Addictive personality traits were assessed with the Addiction Potent

Restless legs syndrome is a movement disorder that seriously affects the quality of life of patients. It is characterized by marked discomfort mainly occurring in the deep tissues of the lower extremities, including deep muscle or bone chafing, as well as crawling sensations or pulling sensations. These sensations often cause patients to awaken after falling asleep and to feel the urge to walk around, which seriously affects their sleep quality. Patients with restless leg syndrome exhibit significantly enhanced sympathetic nerve activity and immune disorders, while stellate ganglion blockage c

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and panic are associated with the experience of a range of bodily symptoms, in particular unpleasant breathing sensations (dyspnea). Respiratory theories of panic disorder have focused on disturbances in blood gas regulation, but respiratory muscle tension as a source of dyspnea has not been considered. We therefore examined the potential of intercostal muscle tension to elicit dyspnea in individuals with high anxiety sensitivity, a risk factor for developing panic disorder.
METHODS: Individuals high and low in anxiety sensitivity (total N=62) completed four tasks: electrom

OBJECTIVE: To validate a universal neuropsychological model that suggests that disorders of the self are best conceptualized as disintegrated neuropsychological processes (ie, sensations, mental experiences) that lack a sense of relationship to the unified experience/sense of self.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study.
SETTING: Rehabilitation hospital outpatient clinics.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 73 individuals including 33 with acquired brain injury and 40 with multiple sclerosis.
INTERVENTION: Not applicable.

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) occurs in patients of all ages, with certain populations at increased risk. When diagnosing ARFID, it is important to assess a range of ARFID symptoms that result in diminished dietary variety and/or intake (eg, food selectivity, fears of eating-related physical sensations, low appetite) and associated consequences (eg, psychosocial impairment, malnutrition) as well as symptoms of other disorders that may better account for ARFID symptoms. Although there are currently no "gold-standard" ARFID treatments, existing treatments to date involve regu

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis, or hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy (HSAN) type IV, is an exceedingly rare neurogenetic disorder. Reported causes are homozygous or compound heterozygous loss-of-function mutations in the neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase 1 gene (NTRK1). Characteristically, patients with this disorder exhibit a complete diminution of pain and temperature sensations over the body disrupted sweat gland functioning, and variable degrees of sensation and cognitive impairments. We hereby present the clinical and neurophysiologic features of a 15-month

A 26-year-old Indonesian male living in Japan consulted our hospital with complaint of fever, general malaise and infiltrative erythematous plaques associated with lymph node swelling. Physical examination revealed a sensation disorder in the distal portion of the extremities and hypertrophy of peripheral nerves. Histopathology of the skin lesion showed the multifocal granulomatous inflammation containing many acid-fast bacilli associated with infiltration of foam cells and neutrophils. Under the diagnosis of leprosy (LL type) accompanied by erythema nodosum leprosum, the combined chemotherapy

The cognitive model of panic (Clark, 1988) suggests that panic attacks result from the catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations rather than the sensations themselves. Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is fear of anxious bodily sensations (Reiss, 1991) and has implications in panic development, maintenance, and severity. Although previous work has demonstrated that AS amplifies symptoms in response to provocations, few have analyzed the role of AS in the relationship between panic symptoms and panic disorder severity. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if AS, a cognitive risk

Pruritus, or itch, is a common sensation that causes a person to want to scratch. It is a complex process that may negatively impact quality of life and commonly occurs with skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis and urticaria. It could also be a symptom related to an underlying disease process such as cholestasis or hyperthyroidism, or simply be caused by dry skin, especially in the cold, winter months. Therapy is often aimed at eliminating the underlying cause first, followed by the management of the itchy sensation. Treatment may include prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications

Despite early recognition of the importance of internal cues (craving sensations and emotional states) for relapse in substance use disorders, relatively little attention has been devoted to exposure-based treatments targeting these cues. Drawing upon research on the conceptualization and treatment of panic disorder, we discuss the application of internal (largely emotional) cue exposure for substance use disorders. Our model for this discussion was based on the role of exposure to feared sensations of anxiety in the treatment of panic disorder and benzodiazepine (BZ) discontinuation. Shared r

Injuries to the lingual nerve remain a relatively uncommon event. However, given the frequency of surgical procedures in this anatomic region, it is likely that every oral and maxillofacial surgeon will be required to manage such an injury. When spontaneous recovery of lingual sensation is absent, microsurgical reconstruction can predictably achieve improved sensation in a majority of patients provided that such injuries are properly assessed and treated early. The quality of the sensory improvement is related to the age of the patient, the timing of surgery, the extent of the neural injury, a

Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has in several studies been linked to substance use, including cannabis use. However, crucial gaps remain regarding how to understand this association. Analyzing the association between ADHD and substance use is complicated because of a pronounced overlap between ADHD, conduct problems, and traits such as sensation-seeking. Objectives: Using data from a large and nationally representative study among Swedish adolescents, this study explored the role of conduct problems, but also of sensation-seeking, in accounting for the association

Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal-dominant, progressive, neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by involuntary movements and other motor impairments, cognitive/behavioral symptoms, and psychiatric disorders. Gait and balance impairments and falls greatly impact on the quality of life among people with HD, and being fall-prone is one of the strongest predictors of nursing-home placement. Gait impairment in HD is characterized by bradykinesia, reduced velocity, and increased variability in spatiotemporal features. Detrimental changes in symmetry, step length, stride time, balance measur

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) and the most widespread nontraumatic cause of disability in young adults around the world. MS occurs in people of all ages, races, and ethnicities. MS is characterized by clinical symptoms resulting from lesions in the brain, spinal cord, or optic nerves that can affect balance, gait, and fall risk. Lesions accumulate over time and occur in different areas of the CNS causing symptoms that include weakness, spasticity, and fatigue, as well as changes in sensation, coordination, vision, cognition, and bladder functi

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) is well described and although many clinicians are aware of the condition, misunderstandings about the disorder still persist. There have been few accounts of the experiences of people with GTS, and none from affected medical practitioners. The first personal account in the medical literature was over 25 years ago. This is the first personal account of having GTS written by a practicing physician. The sensation of having a tic is a peculiar one and is difficult to describe to those who have not experienced them for themselves. Tics are distinctly voluntar

The personality traits of impulsivity and sensation seeking have been proposed as important features of early-onset alcoholism. Early-onset (EOA, n=62) and late-onset (LOA, n=68 ) alcoholic inpatients were compared as to the severity of their substance use and related problems, and self-report scales measuring impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, version 11), sensation seeking (Sensation Seeking Scale), and aggressiveness (Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory). The symptom severity of the EOAs' alcohol-use disorder and related problems was higher than that of the LOAs. Furthermore, the EOAs ha
