Human subthalamic nucleus in movement error detection and its evaluation during visuomotor adaptation.

Monitoring and evaluating movement errors to guide subsequent movements is a critical feature of normal motor control. Previously, we showed that the postmovement increase in electroencephalographic (EEG) beta power over the sensorimotor cortex reflects neural processes that evaluate motor errors consistent with Bayesian inference (Tan et al., 2014). Whether such neural processes are limited to this cortical region or involve the basal ganglia is unclear. Here, we recorded EEG over the cortex and local field potential (LFP) activity in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) from electrodes implanted in

The parietal lobe as a sensorimotor interface: a perspective from clinical and neuroimaging data.

Lesion studies show a wide range of sensorimotor functions that can be selectively disturbed in patients with parietal lobe damage. This is illustrated by the selective impairment of unimodal or polymodal sensorimotor transformations in patients with apraxia. These clinically apparent deficits of goal-directed motor behavior are complimented by more subtle sensorimotor transformation disorders such as mirror agnosia and ataxia that can only be disclosed by special tests. Imaging studies further exemplify the prominent role of the parietal cortex as a sensorimotor interface and provide new info

Task-free functional MRI in cervical dystonia reveals multi-network changes that partially normalize with botulinum toxin.

Cervical dystonia is characterized by involuntary, abnormal movements and postures of the head and neck. Current views on its pathophysiology, such as faulty sensorimotor integration and impaired motor planning, are largely based on studies of focal hand dystonia. Using resting state fMRI, we explored whether cervical dystonia patients have altered functional brain connectivity compared to healthy controls, by investigating 10 resting state networks. Scans were repeated immediately before and some weeks after botulinum toxin injections to see whether connectivity abnormalities were restored. W

Amyloid pathology in spinal cord of the transgenic Alzheimer's disease mice is correlated to the corticospinal tract pathway.

The transgenic TgCRND8 mouse is widely used as an animal model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and exhibits an early onset of senile plaque pathogenesis in the brain. Here we report that TgCRND8 mice also have amyloid-β (Aβ) neuropathology in spinal cord. TgCRND8 mice began to show obvious Aβ deposition in both gray matter of dorsal horn and white matter in the central part of dorsal column of the spinal cord at 10 months of age onward. Further experiments showed that the distribution of Aβ deposition in the spinal cord corresponds to the corticospinal tract pathway and its projection regions in T

Electrocortical amplitude modulations of human level-ground, slope, and stair walking.

This study investigates if the electrocortical amplitude modulations relative to the mean gait cycle are different across walking conditions (i.e., level-ground (LW), ramp ascent (RA), and stair ascent (SA)). Non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) signals were recorded and a systematic EEG processing method was implemented to reduce artifacts. Source localization using independent component analysis and k-means clustering revealed the involvement of four clusters in the brain (Left and Right Occipital Lobe, Posterior Parietal Cortex (PPC), and Sensorimotor Area) during the walking tasks. Is Phantom Limb Awareness Necessary for the Treatment of Phantom Limb Pain?

Phantom limb pain is attributed to abnormal sensorimotor cortical representations. Various feedback treatments have been applied to induce the reorganization of the sensorimotor cortical representations to reduce pain. We developed a training protocol using a brain-computer interface (BCI) to induce plastic changes in the sensorimotor cortical representation of phantom hand movements and demonstrated that BCI training effectively reduces phantom limb pain. By comparing the induced cortical representation and pain, the mechanisms worsening the pain have been attributed to the residual phantom h

Decoding attempted phantom hand movements from ipsilateral sensorimotor areas after amputation.

Objective. The sensorimotor cortex is often selected as target in the development of a Brain-Computer Interface, as activation patterns from this region can be robustly decoded to discriminate between different movements the user executes. Up until recently, such BCIs were primarily based on activity in the contralateral hemisphere, where decoding movements still works even years after denervation. However, there is increasing evidence for a role of the sensorimotor cortex in controlling the ipsilateral body. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of denervation on the movement rep

Characteristic brain functional activation and connectivity during actual and imaginary right-handed grasp.

We used 34-channel functional near infrared spectroscopy to investigate and compare changes in oxyhemoglobin concentration of brain networks in bilateral prefrontal cortex, sensorimotor cortex, and occipital lobe of 22 right-handed healthy adults during executive right-handed grasp (motor execution task) and imagined right-handed grasp (motor imagery task). Then calculated lateral index and functional contribution degree, and measured functional connectivity strength between the regions of interest. In the motor executive block task, there was a significant increase in oxyhemoglobin concentrat

Beta Changes Induced by Acute Hand Loss Model during NMES.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been demonstrated to effectively modulate cortical activities by evoking muscle contraction in upper limb and generating joint movements, which showed an excellent performance in motor rehabilitation. However, due to hand loss and cortical function reorganization induced by hand amputation, how neural activities in sensorimotor cortex response to NMES-evoked muscle contraction in the end of an amputation stump is not clear. In this paper, Ischemic nerve block (INB) technique was used to build an acute hand loss model, and 64-channel EEG signals w

Thinking in spatial terms: decoupling spatial representation from sensorimotor control in monkey posterior parietal areas 7a and LIP.

Perhaps the simplest and most complete description of the cerebral cortex is that it is a sensorimotor controller whose primary purpose is to represent stimuli and movements, and adaptively control the mapping between them. However, in order to think, the cerebral cortex has to generate patterns of neuronal activity that encode abstract, generalized information independently of ongoing sensorimotor events. A critical question confronting cognitive systems neuroscience at present therefore is how neural signals encoding abstract information emerge within the sensorimotor control networks of the

Identification of the cerebral loci processing human swallowing with H2(15)O PET activation.

Lesional and electrophysiological data implicate a role for the cerebral cortex in the initiation and modulation of human swallowing, and yet its functional neuroanatomy remains undefined. We therefore conducted a functional study of the cerebral loci processing human volitional swallowing with 15O-labeled water positron emission tomography (PET) activation imaging. Regional cerebral activation was investigated in 8 healthy right handed male volunteers with a randomized 12-scan paradigm of rest and water swallows (5 ml/bolus, continuous infusion) at increasing frequencies of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3

Reliability of negative BOLD in ipsilateral sensorimotor areas during unimanual task activity.

Research using functional magnetic resonance imaging has for numerous years now reported the existence of a negative blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) response. Based on accumulating evidence, this negative BOLD signal appears to represent an active inhibition of cortical areas in which it is found during task activity. This particularly important with respect to motor function given that it is fairly well-established that, in younger adults, the ipsilateral sensorimotor cortex exhibits negative BOLD during unimanual movements in fMRI. This interhemispheric suppression of cortical activ

Distinct representation of ipsilateral hand movements in sensorimotor areas.

There is ample evidence that the contralateral sensorimotor areas play an important role in movement generation, with the primary motor cortex and the primary somatosensory cortex showing a detailed spatial organization of the representation of contralateral body parts. Interestingly, there are also indications for a role of the motor cortex in controlling the ipsilateral side of the body. However, the precise function of ipsilateral sensorimotor cortex in unilateral movement control is still unclear. Here, we show hand movement representation in the ipsilateral sensorimotor hand area, in whic

Changes in cerebellar output abnormally modulate cortical myoclonus sensorimotor hyperexcitability.

Cortical myoclonus is produced by abnormal neuronal discharges within the sensorimotor cortex, as demonstrated by electrophysiology. Our hypothesis is that the loss of cerebellar inhibitory control over the motor cortex, via cerebello-thalamo-cortical connections, could induce the increased sensorimotor cortical excitability that eventually causes cortical myoclonus. To explore this hypothesis, in the present study we applied anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the cerebellum of patients affected by cortical myoclonus and healthy controls and assessed its effect on sensorimotor

Sensorimotor ECoG Signal Features for BCI Control: A Comparison Between People With Locked-In Syndrome and Able-Bodied Controls.

The sensorimotor cortex is a frequently targeted brain area for the development of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) for communication in people with severe paralysis and communication problems (locked-in syndrome; LIS). It is widely acknowledged that this area displays an increase in high-frequency band (HFB) power and a decrease in the power of the low frequency band (LFB) during movement of, for example, the hand. Upon termination of hand movement, activity in the LFB band typically shows a short increase (rebound). The ability to modulate the neural signal in the sensorimotor cortex by imag

Effects of motor fatigue on cortical activation level and functional connectivity during upper limb resistance training.

This study aimed to clarify the effects of motor fatigue on cortical activation levels and functional connectivity during upper limb resistance training using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Ten healthy college students participated in a high intensity upper limb resistance training and fNIRS was used to measure the changes of oxyhemoglobin concentration changes (HbO) in bilateral sensorimotor cortex (SMC), premotor cortex (PMC), supplementary motor area (SMA), and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). The integral value (IV) of blood oxygen signal was calculated as an indicat

BackWards - Unveiling the brain's topographic organization of paraspinal sensory input.

Cortical reorganization and its potential pathological significance are being increasingly studied in musculoskeletal disorders such as chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients. However, detailed sensory-topographic maps of the human back are lacking, and a baseline characterization of such representations, reflecting the somatosensory organization of the healthy back, is needed before exploring potential sensory map reorganization. To this end, a novel pneumatic vibrotactile stimulation method was used to stimulate paraspinal sensory afferents, while studying their cortical representations in un

Portable wireless and fibreless fNIRS headband compares favorably to a stationary headcap-based system.

This study's purpose is to characterize the performance of a prototype functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) headband meant to enable quick and easy measurements from the sensorimotor cortices. The fact that fNIRS is well-suited to ergonomic designs (i.e., their ability to be made wireless, their relative robustness to movement artifacts among other characteristics) has resulted in many recent examples of novel ergonomic fNIRS systems; however, the optical nature of fNIRS measurement presents an inherent challenge to measurement at areas of the brain underlying haired parts of the head
