Theta-frequency tACS selectively enhances early-phase motor learning through cerebellar modulation.

The cerebellum plays a crucial role in motor learning, facilitating processes such as timing, error correction, and coordination. However, optimizing noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) to enhance these processes remains challenging. This study investigated the effects of cerebellar transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at 5 Hz and 50 Hz on motor learning during a serial reaction time task (SRTT). Twenty-six healthy participants completed three sessions, receiving 5 Hz, 50 Hz, or Sham stimulation during SRTT performance. Changes in reaction time and sequence performance were mea

Discernible effects of tDCS over the primary motor and posterior parietal cortex on different stages of motor learning.

Implicit motor learning and memory involve complex cortical and subcortical networks. The induction of plasticity in these network components via non-invasive brain stimulation, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), has shown to improve motor learning. However, studies showing these effects are mostly restricted to stimulation of the primary motor cortex (M1) during the early stage of learning. Because of this, we aimed to explore the efficacy of anodal tDCS applied over the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), which is involved in memory processes, on serial reaction time task

Hippocampal contribution to early and later stages of implicit motor sequence learning.

Implicit motor sequence learning refers to an important human ability to acquire new motor skills through the repeated performance of a motor sequence. This learning process is characterized by slow, incremental gains of motor performance. The present fMRI study was developed to better delineate the areas supporting these temporal dynamics of learning. By using the serial color matching paradigm, our study focused on the motor level of sequence learning and tracked the time course of learning-related neural changes. Imaging results showed a significant contribution of the left anterior hippoca

Protective role of hemokinin-1 against age-dependent spatial memory and attention decline in mice.

Age-related cognitive decline is a major social and medical challenge, but its mechanisms remain poorly understood; prevention and therapy are unsatisfactory. The tachykinin hemokinin-1 (HK-1), encoded by the Tac4 gene, is expressed in brain regions involved in learning and memory and has been implicated in neuroimmune regulation, but its contribution to age-dependent cognitive impairment remains unclear. Here, we investigated whether endogenous HK-1 modulates cognitive performance during aging. Young (3-5 months), middle-aged (12-15 months), and old (18-20 months) male and female C57BL/6 J wi

Visual sequential processing and language ability in children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

This study investigated the role of sequential processing in spoken language outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), ages 5;3-11;4, by comparing them to children with typical hearing (TH), ages 6;3-9;7, on sequential learning and memory tasks involving easily nameable and difficult-to-name visual stimuli. Children who are DHH performed more poorly on easily nameable sequencing tasks, which positively predicted receptive vocabulary scores. Results suggest sequential learning and memory may underlie delayed language skills of many children who are DHH. Implications for langu

Motor learning and chunking in dyslexia.

The authors investigated whether participants with dyslexia had problems with executing discrete keying sequences and with switching between chunks in those sequences. Participants with dyslexia and participants in the control group executed 2 6-key sequences each, with 1 sequence consisting of 2 successive instances of 1 3-key segment (2 x 3 sequence) and the other not involving such a repetition (1 x 6 sequence). The authors assumed that during execution of the 2 x 3 sequence, the same chunk could be reused, whereas during execution of the 1 x 6 sequence a switch between chunks had to be mad

Encoding order and developmental dyslexia: a family of skills predicting different orthographic components.

We investigated order encoding in developmental dyslexia using a task that presented nonalphanumeric visual characters either simultaneously or sequentially--to tap spatial and temporal order encoding, respectively--and asked participants to reproduce their order. Dyslexic participants performed poorly in the sequential condition, but normally in the simultaneous condition, except for positions most susceptible to interference. These results are novel in demonstrating a selective difficulty with temporal order encoding in a dyslexic group. We also tested the associations between our order reco

Between thought and expression, a magnetoencephalography study of the "tip-of-the-tongue" phenomenon.

"Tip-of-the-tongue" (TOT) is the phenomenon associated with the inaccessibility of a known word from memory. It is universally experienced, increases in frequency with age, and is most common for proper nouns. It is a good model for the symptom of anomia experienced much more frequently by some aphasic patients following brain injury. Here, we induced the TOT state in older participants while they underwent brain scanning with magnetoencephalography to investigate the changes in oscillatory brain activity associated with failed retrieval of known words. Using confrontation naming of pictures o

Working memory in individuals with HIV infection.

The central executive component (CE) of Baddeley's working memory model (Baddeley, 1992) was evaluated in 26 asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals (HIV+) and 23 HIV-control subjects using a dual-task working memory paradigm. The HIV+ and HIV- groups showed an equivalent reduction in performance on both the primary task (visual vigilance) and the secondary task (letter span) when they were performed concurrently relative to when either task was performed alone. This result suggested normal CE functioning in these HIV+ subjects. In contrast, the HIV+ subjects had signifi

Verbal memory impairments in dyslexia.

Although verbal memory deficits are frequently reported in reading disabled children, the specific mechanisms underlying these impairments have yet to be clearly defined. The present study used the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) to assess verbal learning in 57 dyslexic children and 114 controls matched for gender, age, and WISC-R Vocabulary score. Three areas of verbal memory were investigated: Recall and recognition, use of learning strategies, and interference effects. The dyslexic group learned the list items more slowly, recalled fewer words on the last learnin

Perceptual Temporal Structure Supports Rhythm Learning and Enhances Theta Oscillations When Perception and Action Are Dissociated.

BACKGROUND: Rhythmic knowledge enables the precise timing of actions in dynamic environments. Although rhythm learning has been extensively studied, it remains debated whether such learning arises primarily from the perceptual encoding of rhythmic inputs or from the repetitive execution of periodic actions. METHODS: To address this question, we developed a temporal-rhythm serial reaction time (TR-SRT) paradigm that dissociates rhythmic structures in perceptual inputs from the timing of motor responses. Across three experiments, participants learned rhythms under visuomotor (Experiment 1, N =

Serial recall of poor readers in two presentation modalities: combined effects of phonological similarity and word length.

Immediate ordered memory for words in poor readers was compared with that of two control groups of normal readers, matched on chronological age and reading age, respectively. The groups were equated for basal memory capacity. Phonological similarity and word length were simultaneously manipulated. Items were presented either auditorily (spoken words) or visually (their corresponding drawings). The results suggest that when having to recall a restricted set of items and when verbal output is eliminated, phonological coding and rehearsal occur to the same extent in poor and normal readers, with

Positron emission tomographic studies during serial word-reading by normal and dyslexic adults.

Positron-emission tomography (PET) was used to study regional cerebral metabolic activity during oral reading in right-handed adult males with, and without a childhood and family history of developmental dyslexia. Significant group differences in normalized regional metabolic values were revealed in prefrontal cortex and in the lingual (inferior) region of the occipital lobe. Lingual values were bilaterally higher for dyslexic than normal readers. In contrast to the asymmetry observed in prefrontal and lingual regions in nondyslexic subjects during reading, the dyslexic pattern was more symmet

Lithium, but not valproic acid or carbamazepine, suppresses impulsive-like action in rats.

RATIONALE: Higher impulsivity is a pathological symptom in several psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder, and is a risk factor for suicide. OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to determine whether major mood-stabilizing drugs used for the treatment of bipolar disorder could suppress impulsive-like action in the three-choice serial reaction time task (3-CSRTT). METHODS: Following training for the 3-CSRTT, rats were acutely administered lithium chloride (LiCl; 0, 3.2, 10, and 32 mg/kg, i.p.), valproic acid (0, 10, 32, and 100 mg/kg, i.p.), or carbamazepine (0, 10, 20, and 30 mg/kg, i.p.). Children who read words accurately despite language impairment: who are they and how do they do it?

Some children learn to read accurately despite language impairments (LI). Nine- to 10-year-olds were categorized as having LI only (n = 35), dyslexia (DX) only (n = 73), LI + DX (n = 54), or as typically developing (TD; n = 176). The LI-only group had mild to moderate deficits in reading comprehension. They were similar to the LI + DX group on most language measures, but rapid serial naming was superior to the LI + DX group and comparable to the TD. For a subset of children seen at 4 and 6 years, early phonological skills were equally poor in those later classified as LI or LI + DX. Poor langu

Movement preparation in high-functioning autism and Asperger disorder: a serial choice reaction time task involving motor reprogramming.

Autism and Asperger disorder have long been associated with movement abnormalities, although the neurobehavioural details of these abnormalities remain poorly defined. Clumsiness has traditionally been associated with Asperger disorder but not autism, although this is controversial. Others have suggested that both groups demonstrate a similar global motor delay. In this study we aimed to determine whether movement preparation or movement execution was atypical in these disorders and to describe any differences between autism and Asperger disorder. A simple motor reprogramming task was employed

Brain activation during implicit sequence learning in individuals with trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania (TTM) may be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and other neuropsychiatric conditions characterized by cortico-striatal dysfunction. Functional imaging studies of OCD using an implicit learning task have found abnormalities in striatal and hippocampal activation. The current study investigated whether similar abnormalities occur in TTM. Functional MRI and the serial reaction time (SRT) task were used to assess striatal and hippocampal activation during implicit sequence learning in TTM and healthy control (HC) subjects. The results for 20 age- and education-matched

Implicit learning deficits in dyslexic adults: an fMRI study.

It is assumed that several neuropsychological impairments characterize the cognitive profile of individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD). Phonological and visual processing are often impaired as well as auditory processing, attention, and information processing speed. Although reports in the literature on implicit learning abilities are contradictory, recent neurological and physiological data suggest that these abilities are deficient in individuals with DD. To evaluate implicit learning we administered a classical version of the serial reaction time task (SRTT) related to sequence learni
