Same-sex neighbours grow better than opposite-sex neighbours across three plant species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plants recognize their neighbours through above- and belowground signaling, adjusting their growth strategies to maximize individual performance and maintain species coexistence. Dioecious plants are common in nature, but it is unknown whether they can recognize the sex of neighbouring plants and how they affect their performance. METHODS: We analyzed the root-based sexual recognition mechanisms in the seedlings of three dioecious species with different life forms including Spinacia oleracea (herb), Siraitia grosvenorii (vine) and Diospyros morrisiana (tree). Seedlings we

Prenatal sex discordance revealing SRY-positive 46,XX testicular disorder of sex development.

46,XX testicular disorder of sex development (DSD) is a rare condition usually diagnosed during adolescence or adulthood due to infertility or hypogonadism. Early diagnosis in phenotypically normal infants is uncommon. We report a male infant identified following discordant prenatal sex assessment, with noninvasive prenatal testing suggesting a female fetus and prenatal ultrasonography demonstrating male genitalia. Postnatal chromosomal analysis revealed 46,X,add(X) (p22.3) with SRY positivity. Physical examination showed normal male external genitalia with bilaterally descended testes and no

Sex-dependent dopaminergic vulnerability may contribute to sex differences in Parkinson's disease risk.

Men are more likely than women to develop Parkinson's disease, yet the biological basis of this sex difference in Parkinson's disease risk remains unresolved. The nigrosome-1 (NG-1), a dopaminergic subregion of the substantia nigra, is selectively vulnerable to degeneration and iron accumulation in Parkinson's disease, therefore representing a plausible locus for sex-linked vulnerability. Using iron-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging from the UK Biobank, we examined sex differences in NG-1 magnetic susceptibility across adulthood. We analysed cross-sectional data from 53 792 individuals aged

Assessing Variability in Offending Between Sex and Non-Sex Offenders Through Age 70.

BACKGROUND: The criminal career paradigm represented a fundamental shift within criminology as it drew attention to the longitudinal patterning of offending, with research findings leading to important new insights on matters related to theory, methods and policy. AIMS: This study examines the longitudinal crime mix among sex and non-sex offenders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Administrative data of over 43,000 individuals released from incarceration in the State of Texas through age 70 are used to examine crime mixture patterns. RESULTS: Key findings show that: having a sex offence history signi

Sex-specific associations between sex hormones and clinical symptoms in late-life schizophrenia.

The prevalence of late-life schizophrenia is increasing with high burden. It is well-documented that schizophrenia affects men and women differently in terms of symptoms. Sex hormones, which play a role in the pathology and symptoms of schizophrenia, are greatly affected by aging. To the best of our knowledge, this is a study to examine the sex differences in psychiatric symptoms and their correlation with sex hormones in participants with late-life schizophrenia. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) factors were evaluated. Testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing

Beyond Haldane's rule: Sex-biased hybrid dysfunction for all modes of sex determination.

Haldane's rule occupies a special place in biology as one of the few 'rules' of speciation, with empirical support from hundreds of species. And yet, its classic purview is restricted taxonomically to the subset of organisms with heteromorphic sex chromosomes. I propose explicit acknowledgement of generalized hypotheses about Haldane's rule that frame sex bias in hybrid dysfunction broadly and irrespective of the sexual system. The consensus view of classic Haldane's rule holds that sex-biased hybrid dysfunction across taxa is a composite phenomenon that requires explanations from multiple cau

Reproductive hormones and sex chromosomes drive sex differences in the sleep-wake cycle.

There are well-documented gender differences in the risk and severity of sleep disorders and associated comorbidities. While fundamental sex differences in sleep regulatory mechanisms may contribute to gender disparities, biological responses to sleep loss and stress may underlie many of the risks for sleep disorders in women and men. Some of these sex differences appear to be dependent on sex chromosome complement (XX or XY) and the organizational effects of reproductive hormones. Reproductive development plays a critical role in the ability of sex chromosomes and reproductive hormones to pro

Rapid evolution of sex role specialization in a hermaphrodite under sex-limited selection.

The evolution of separate sexes from hermaphroditism is thought to have occurred independently many times, and may be linked to the evolution of sex chromosomes. Even though we have a good understanding of the theoretical steps in the evolution of sex chromosomes from a hermaphrodite ancestor, the initial stages are still hard to study in animals because many well-studied animal sex chromosome systems are old. We addressed this problem by experimentally selecting a hermaphrodite via sex-limited experimental evolution for several generations, simulating the early stages in the evolution of a se

Retrospective Perceptions of Grooming in Same-Sex versus Opposite-Sex Child Sexual Abuse.

Research on child sexual abuse (CSA) has predominantly focused on opposite-sex (e.g., male adult-female child) adult-child pairs, neglecting same-sex (e.g., male adult-male child) adult-child pairs. Grooming behaviors are an early indicator of CSA and while it is important to recognize grooming to prevent abuse, research has shown that detecting these behaviors is a difficult task. Despite this difficulty, people retrospectively overestimate their ability to recognize abuse once it is clear that abuse has occurred. The current study investigated how outcome information (abuse did or did not oc

Distributed effects of biological sex define sex-typical motor behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Sex differences in shared behaviors (for example, locomotion and feeding) are a nearly universal feature of animal biology. Though these behaviors may share underlying neural programs, their kinematics can exhibit robust differences between males and females. The neural underpinnings of these differences are poorly understood because of the often-untested assumption that they are determined by sex-specific body morphology. Here, we address this issue in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, which features two sexes with distinct body morphologies but similar locomotor circuitry and body muscle.

Sex work in Mexico: vulnerability of male, travesti, transgender and transsexual sex workers.

In Mexico, male sex workers (MSW) and travesti, transgender and transsexual (TTT) sex workers are among the groups most affected by HIV. They suffer from stigma and discrimination, yet are often absent from the design of programmes and HIV prevention campaigns. The objective of this study was to provide an account of the social context in which MSW and TTT sex workers live, by focusing on their sexual identities, sexual practices and vulnerability to HIV. Data collection took place in Mexico City and involved observational work together with 36 in-depth interviews. Findings reveal a differenti

Learning about sex outside the gutter: attitudes toward a computer sex-expert system.

In an ongoing research program investigating the utility of Sexpert, an expert computer system designed to counsel couples about their sexual relationships, we tested whether sexually active couples' attitudes concerning computerized sexual counseling could be affected by interacting with Sexpert. Eighty-one young heterosexual couples drawn from the university and general community were assigned to one of three sources of feedback about couple sexual functioning (Sexpert, a video, a self-help book) or a control condition. Attitudes toward all counseling sources used in the study were assessed

A Rare Differences of Sex Development: Male Sex Reversal Syndrome (NonSyndromic 46, XX with Negative Sex-Determining Region of Y Chromosome Gene).

46, XX testicular differences of sex development (DSD) is a rare cause of DSD presenting as a phenotypical male with chromosomal sex of 46, XX. Sex-determining region of the Y chromosome (SRY)-positive 46, XX DSDs have a well-characterized pathogenetic mechanism, whereas in SRY-negative 46, XX DSDs, the pathogenesis is not clearly delineated. Herein, we present a case of a 3½-year-old child who presented with ambiguous genitalia and bilateral palpable gonads. On the basis of a karyotype and fluorescent in situ hybridization, we arrived at a diagnosis of SRY-negative 46, XX testicular DSD. Basa

Correlates of condomless anal sex among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Tijuana, Mexico: The role of public sex venues.

Condomless anal sex between male partners is the primary risk factor for HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). Correlates of condomless anal sex have been well-studied in developed countries, but they have received less attention in lower-to-middle income countries (LMIC), where MSM are often subject to stigma, discrimination, intolerance, and even the criminalization of same sex behavior. In Mexico, a LMIC where traditional views on homosexuality are common, HIV prevalence among MSM is high (16.9%), yet little research has been conducted on the correlates of condomless anal

Differences of sex development.

Differences of sex development (DSD) represent a group of congenital conditions that affect human sex development and maturation owing to discrepancies of chromosomal, gonadal and phenotypic sex. The Chicago consensus classifies DSD as sex chromosome DSD, 46,XY DSD and 46,XX DSD, with subclassifications according to gonadal determination into testes and ovaries and hormone-dependent differentiation of Müllerian and Wolffian embryonic structures into female-typical or male-typical internal and external sex organs. DSD may occur as an isolated condition or as part of a complex syndrome. Diagnosi

Sex Differences in Dementia.

BackgroundWomen in many cohorts have a higher risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of dementia. Sex is a biological construct whereby differences in disease manifestation and prevalence are rooted in genetic differences between XX and XY combinations of chromosomes. This chapter focuses specifically on sex-driven differences in dementia, as opposed to differences driven by gender - a social construct referring to the societal norms that influence people's roles, relationships, and positional power throughout their lifetime.MethodsUsing a narrative review, this chapter explor

Genetics, sex, and gender.

This review aims to give an overview of what has been discovered so far and what still needs to be analyzed about how sex and gender affect the disease development. These two terms are often confused and indifferently used. In principle, the term "sex" refers to biological differences between males and females, specifically reproductive organs and their functions, while the term "gender" refers to the social context in which people live and which contributes to a subjective sexual identity, masculine or feminine. This dichotomy, however, is not so rigid and both sex and gender influence differ

Sex Maintenance in Mammals.

The crucial event in mammalian sexual differentiation occurs at the embryonic stage of sex determination, when the bipotential gonads differentiate as either testes or ovaries, according to the sex chromosome constitution of the embryo, XY or XX, respectively. Once differentiated, testes produce sexual hormones that induce the subsequent differentiation of the male reproductive tract. On the other hand, the lack of masculinizing hormones in XX embryos permits the formation of the female reproductive tract. It was long assumed that once the gonad is differentiated, this developmental decision i

Sex effects in pyelonephritis.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are generally considered a disease of women. However, UTIs affect females throughout the lifespan, and certain male populations (including infants and elderly men) are also susceptible. Epidemiologically, pyelonephritis is more common in women but carries increased morbidity when it does occur in men. Among children, high-grade vesicoureteral reflux is a primary risk factor for upper-tract UTI in both sexes. However, among young infants with UTI, girls are outnumbered by boys; risk factors include posterior urethral valves and lack of circumcision. Recent advanc
