Sexual dysfunction has a high prevalence among hypertensive men, and hypertension per se, regardless of drugs, has been suggested to affect sexual function. The available studies have not clarified which factors play a major role in the pathogenesis of sexual dysfunction in hypertensive men. Neurovascular factors, however, seem to be especially important, (in particular defective nitric oxide activity), although hormonal and psychogenic factors cannot be excluded. Further studies are needed to answer the important question of whether erectile dysfunction seen in hypertension may be one express

Controlled outcome studies investigating specific components in the etiology, assessment, and treatment of male sexual disorders are reviewed. Premature ejaculators appear just as accurate in assessing their levels of sexual arousal as are men not suffering from this condition. Absolute levels of sexual activity or desire do not seem to be as important for these individuals as has been suggested. Attempts to distinguish organic versus functional erectile failure using the MMPI or historical data have generally proved unsuccessful. Treatment effectiveness in premature ejaculation may be due to

Sexuality is a key component of quality of life; therefore, sexual dysfunction can affect both physical and emotional well-being. However, despite its high prevalence, the impact of psoriasis on patients' sexual health is often overlooked in clinical practice. This Delphi study aimed to provide consensus recommendations among dermatologists on the comprehensive management of the impact of psoriasis on sexuality and to identify the barriers they face when addressing this issue. Consensus was reached on 23 recommendations (88.5%) addressing the impact of psoriasis on sexuality, early detection,

Sexuality is a complex aspect of the human being's life and is more than of only the sexual act. Normal sexual functioning consists of sexual activity with transition through the phases from arousal to relaxation with no problems, and with a feeling of pleasure, fulfillment and satisfaction. Rheumatic diseases may affect all aspects of life including sexual functioning. The reasons for disturbing sexual functioning are multifactorial and comprise disease-related factors as well as therapy. In rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis patients, pain and depression could be the principal f

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunctions in individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have been previously reported. However, most of these results refer to physical and behavioral measures. Psychological aspects have not been previously researched.
METHOD: In the present study, we utilized an online version of the "Multidimensional Sexuality Questionnaire" (MSQ) in a sample of individuals with SAD (n = 242, 40.70 ± 13.40 years, 58.7% female). We hypothesized greater difficulties for SAD individuals compared to controls without SAD through the influence of fear and avoidance symptoms.
RESULTS: B

BACKGROUND: Recently, the etiology of sexual dysfunctions in women has been approached from different angles. In clinical practice and in previous studies, it has been observed that women with sexual problems experience anxiety problems and express more rigid and perfectionistic personality traits than women without these problems.
AIM: To investigate whether personality disorder characteristics according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) and psychological symptoms are associated with sexual problems in women.
METHODS: 188 wo

The psychophysiological method has been applied to the study of human sexual response for well over three decades. The value of this method in providing an objective, integrated approach to the understanding of sexual response, and more specifically sexual dysfunction, is presented. Selected results from recent studies using this methodology illustrate the complex relationships that emerge among cognitive, affective, and physiological components of the sexual response. In addition, data from a systematic study of the use of psychophysiological procedures as an aid in differential diagnosis are

Sexual difficulties are common but under-recognized in Parkinson's disease (PD), significantly affecting quality of life. They include both sexual dysfunction (SD) - a non-motor symptom - and hypersexuality (HS) - an impulse control disorder (ICD). SD often presents as reduced libido, arousal issues, or orgasmic problems, while HS involves compulsive sexual thoughts or behaviors, often linked to dopamine agonists. These opposing symptoms may coexist, adding to diagnostic complexity. Sexual health in PD is influenced by neurological, vascular, endocrine, psychological, and medication-related fa

OBJECTIVE: To reflect on the reciprocal etiologic relationship between female sexual dysfunction and drug abuse, and its implications for practice and research.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A description of the effects and short-term and long-term consequences of drug use in women is presented together with an analysis of whether drug use is the cause of sexual dysfunction or on the contrary, if sexual dysfunction leads to drug abuse. The need to conduct further research into the relationship between these two variables and their clinical implications is also discussed.
CONCLUSION: Drug use affect

Sexual disorders are very common problems in the psychiatric patients. Many factors induce sexual dysfunction, e.g. the effects of antidepressants and antipsychotics. The article reviews literature on sexual disorders in psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders and eating disorders. Bipolar disorder significantly affects the quality of life and increases the risk of sexual dysfunction. In the manic phase there is an increase in libido, which is associated with the risky sexual behavior. Depressive disorders are associated

Sexual well-being frequently declines following the menopause transition and can be associated with significant personal and relationship distress. This distress is the hallmark of female sexual dysfunction (FSD). FSD is highly prevalent in postmenopausal women. The prevalence of sexual problems increases with age, but conversely this is associated with decreasing distress with advancing age. This pattern has been seen across multiple international populations with varied cultural norms. While the etiology of FSD is multifactorial, the physiological changes of sex hormone insufficiency and pos
