Sexual health and sexual trauma in women with severe mental illness: An exploratory survey of Western Australian community mental health services.

Australian women attending community mental health services were surveyed to determine the relationship between sexual trauma, sexual activity, and sexual health seeking behaviors. Self-reported history of "forced sex" was 58.4% (n = 122 out of 220). Latent class analysis revealed a three-class model: "sexually active and health seeking," "low sexual activity and health seeking" and "low sexual activity and not health seeking." An association with general practitioner engagement and sexual health seeking behaviors was found. Rates of self-reported sexual trauma reinforce the need for screening

Associations between female sexual distress, genitourinary diagnoses, and mental health in a sexual health clinic population: a single-center retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Female sexual distress is multifactorial, with barriers to care arising from limited research and sociocultural stigmas. While studies examine individual impacts of depression, anxiety, dyspareunia, and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) on distress, few explore comorbid intersections. This project evaluates how common psychiatric and genitourinary diagnoses are associated with female sexual distress. METHODS: A retrospective chart review with cross-sectional analytic component was conducted of 515 patients seen in a single clinic between January 2019 and July 2025. Data inc

Sexual health education for adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities: recommendations for accessible sexual and reproductive health information.

Sexual and reproductive health is an important aspect of human development, but discussions with adolescents and young adults on this topic are often challenging for health-care providers. As a result, many adolescents and young adults do not receive appropriate, comprehensive sexual education, despite recognition from WHO and the UN that access to this education is a human right. Adolescents and young adults with mild to moderate intellectual or developmental disability, or both, are just as likely to be sexually active as are their peers without disability; however, these individuals are les

Vaginal Microbiome and Its Relationship to Behavior, Sexual Health, and Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

The vaginal microbiota has great significance in maintaining vaginal health and protecting the host from disease. Recent advances in molecular techniques and informatics allow researchers to explore microbial composition in detail and to compare the structure of vaginal microbial communities with behavior and health outcomes, particularly acquisition and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and poor birth outcomes. Vaginal flora have been found to cluster into a limited number of communities, although community structure is dynamic. Certain community types are more associated w

Sexuality and sexual health: constructs and expressions in the extended Middle East and North Africa.

The extended Middle East and North Africa (EMENA) region is the world region with the second youngest population, where globalization, migration, information technology, and political changes are contributing to the shaping of sexuality and sexual behaviors. Understanding the various sociocultural, demographic and public health dimensions of sexual and reproductive health of young people is fundamental to understanding the pattern of sexual behavior and the burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including human papillomavirus-related diseases. New norms and forms of marriage have em

Barriers to sexual health care for sexually diverse Muslim men: a scoping review.

Sexually diverse Muslim men (SDMM) are seen to present later and with more advanced symptoms of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The limited access to sexual healthcare services is attributed to the stigma associated with their multiple intersecting identities. We conducted a scoping review to synthesise research on barriers impeding SDMM's access to sexual health care. We used Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage framework as the methodology for the review. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses' extension for scoping reviews, was used as a gui

Sexuality and sexual health among female youth with borderline personality disorder pathology.

AIM: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder that is characterized by unstable relationships, impulsive behaviours and identity disturbance. BPD usually has its onset between puberty and young adulthood and presents disproportionately among females in clinical settings. Taken together, this makes young women with BPD a particularly vulnerable group with regard to healthy psychosexual development. It was hypothesized that female youth with BPD pathology would be more likely to score worse on measures of sexual health and safety, and to show greater uncertainty in sexua

Approaches for improving sexuality and sexual health care in mental health settings: A qualitative study exploring clinicians' own perspectives.

There is an acknowledged professional practice gap regarding sexuality and sexual health related needs within mental health settings in Australia and internationally. Yet little is known about how clinicians can be best supported or enabled to improve sexuality-related practice, from their own perspective. This is important, given the sensitive and complex nature of sexuality and sexual health within the context of mental distress and service provision. This article reports a follow-up study, where mental health clinicians who participated in an initial study were invited to reflect on and dis

Unpacking the Gendered Nature of Sexual Health Information Seeking: The Role of Relationship Quality, Sexual Shame and Sexual Relationship Power.

Women during emerging adulthood are disproportionately susceptible to sexually transmitted infections due to biological and socioeconomic vulnerabilities. Central to safe sex is the process by which women seek information regarding their male partners' intentions to use condoms, which is complicated by the gendered nature of sexual risks and the influence of sociocultural factors. Drawing on the theory of motivated information management, we examined how relationship quality, sexual relationship power, and sexual shame were associated with sexual risk information-seeking among Chinese emerging

Association between childhood sexual abuse and early sexual debut among Chinese adolescents: The role of sexual and reproductive health education.

BACKGROUND: Despite accumulating evidence of the long-term impacts of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), few studies have investigated the association between CSA and early sexual debut among adolescents. In this study, we examine the relationship between CSA and early initiation of sexual intercourse among Chinese youth, and the role of school-based sex education in this association, based on a nationally representative survey. METHODS: Data were collected from the Survey of Youth Access to Reproductive Health in China (YARHC) conducted in 2009. Multivariable logistic regression models were used

LGBTQIA+ sexual health: a SITCC clinical framework for integrating cognitive-behavioral therapy and sexual medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender diverse (LGBTQIA+) individuals experience significant sexual health disparities shaped by minority stress processes, trauma exposure, mental health burden, and historically heteronormative and cisnormative clinical frameworks. Although international guidelines, standards of care, and professional guidance documents increasingly endorse affirmative and evidence-informed care, their integration into routine sexual medicine and psychotherapeutic practice remains inconsistent, particularly in the assessment and clinical management of sexual dysfunctions in LGBTQIA+

Historical Trends in Sexual Activity and Sexual Health in France (1992-2023): A Gendered Perspective.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze historical gender trends in sexual indicators in France over a period of three decades. METHODS: We used data from three national probability surveys on sexual behaviors in France conducted in 1992 (N = 20,055), 2006 (N = 12,364), and 2023 (N = 19,015) to compare sexual indicators among men and women aged 18-69 years. RESULTS: The median age at first sexual intercourse has increased since the late 2010s, reaching 18.2 years for women and 17.7 years for men in 2023. The average number of lifetime sexual partners for those who have already had a sexual partner increased f

Determinants of Sexual Health and Sexual Quality of Life after Cardiovascular Surgeries: An Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sexual health and sexual quality of life are key components of psychosocial adjustment after cardiac surgeries and are often linked with improving the general quality of life. Reviews have been conducted to highlight the associations between cardiovascular diseases and sexual dysfunctions, but no review reported determinants of sexual health and sexual quality of life in patients after cardiovascular surgeries. We aimed to comprehensively examine the determinants of sexual health and sexual quality of life among individuals with cardiovascular surgeries. METHODS: Literatur

The Impact of Sibling Relationships on Behavioral and Sexual Health among Latino Sexual Minority Men.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective method for preventing HIV acquisition and plays a crucial role in the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the US initiative. However, there are various barriers that hinder the access and uptake of PrEP among Latino sexual minority men (SMM) at individual, interpersonal, and cultural levels. While the significance of cultural factors in designing and implementing HIV prevention programs for Latino populations has been consistently emphasized in the literature and prioritized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, few studies have directl

Pornography Use and Sexual Health: Investigating Its Relationship with Sexual Function and Satisfaction in Iran.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between pornography consumption and sexual function and satisfaction, and the moderating role of gender, among 500 Iranian adults. We hypothesized that higher levels of pornography consumption would be associated with greater sexual desire and arousal but lower sexual satisfaction and erectile function, and that gender would moderate these associations. METHODS: Data were collected via a snowball model method through social media. The questionnaires used included the Consumption of Pornography Scale - General (COPS-G), the Female Sexual Function
