The influence of acute hypoxia and carotid body denervation on thermoregulation during non-rapid eye movement sleep in the developing lamb.

We investigated the influence of ambient temperature on the thermoregulatory response to hypoxia in developing lambs before (at 4 and 14 days of age) and after (17 and 30 days of age) carotid body denervation (CBD). Lambs were studied during non-rapid eye movement sleep at thermoneutral (23-15 C) and cool (10-5 C) ambient temperatures, during normoxia and acute hypoxia (inspired oxygen content of 13 %). Measurements of oxygen consumption, arterial partial pressures of O2 and CO2, colonic temperature, incidence of shivering and plasma concentrations of thyroid hormones, cortisol, insulin and gl

Effects of carbon dioxide inhalation on physiological responses to cold.

Experiments were conducted to assess the thermoregulatory effects of CO2 breathing during cold exposures. Four men and two women (19-35 yrs old), clad in bathing suits, rested for 75 min on three occasions in a thermoneutral environment (29 degrees C) and on three occasions in the cold (5 degrees C). During these exposures the subjects breathed either: 1) air for 75 min, 2) air from 0-30 min, 4% CO2 in air from 30-60 min, and air from 60-75 min, or 3) 4% CO2 from 0-60 min and air from 60-75 min. Oxygen uptake (Vo2) was higher at 5 degrees C than at 29 degrees C due to shivering, but was not si

The Effects of 10-Minute Outdoor Cold-Water Immersion on Postural Stability.

INTRODUCTION: Decreased body temperature after accidental cold-water immersion can impair fine motor control, muscular function, and cognition. Similar impairments to postural stability could further increase the risk of musculoskeletal injury before a complete recovery is made. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how changes in core temperature, skin temperature, and shivering magnitude after cold-water immersion impact postural stability. We also sought to assess how those outcomes recovered following active rewarming. We hypothesized that relatively colder foot temperature, lower core

Influence of respiratory heat transfer on thermogenesis and heat storage after cold immersion.

1. Ten male subjects were cooled on three occasions to a rectal temperature of 35 degrees C by immersion to the neck in water at 11.3 degrees C. The subjects were rewarmed for 60 min, once by metabolic heat production alone (shivering), once by inhalation rewarming with spontaneous breathing of saturated air at 47 degrees C (control) and once by inhalation rewarming with ventilation regulated at 40 litres/min by respiring a controlled fraction of CO2 (hyperventilation). 2. Metabolic heat production was substantially reduced by inhalation rewarming (P less than 0.05), from 913 kJ when shivering

Thermogenic Adipose Redox Mechanisms: Potential Targets for Metabolic Disease Therapies.

Metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), have several negative health outcomes on affected humans. Dysregulated energy metabolism is a key component underlying the pathophysiology of these conditions. Adipose tissue is a fundamental regulator of energy homeostasis that utilizes several redox reactions to carry out the metabolism. Brown and beige adipose tissues, in particular, perform highly oxidative reactions during non-shivering thermogenesis to dissipate energy as heat. The appropriate regulation of energy metabolism then requires coordinated anti

Thermoresponsiveness of posterior hypothalamic (PH) neurons of rats to scrotal and abdominal thermal stimulation.

The thermoresponsiveness of posterior hypothalamic (PH) neurons to localized, incremental thermal heating and cooling between 10-40 degrees C of the abdomen or scrotum was determined in urethane anesthetized, male Sprague-Dawley rats whose core temperature was maintained at 37 degrees C during testing. PH extracellular neuronal activity was recorded along with changes in gastrocnemius muscle EMG activity and temperature (Tms, indicative of shivering thermogenesis) and intrascapular brown adipose tissue temperature (TIBATs, indicative of non-shivering thermogenesis). Seventy-five PH neurons wer

Hypothalamic Neuromodulation of Hypothermia in Domestic Animals.

When an organism detects decreases in their core body temperature, the hypothalamus, the main thermoregulatory center, triggers compensatory responses. These responses include vasomotor changes to prevent heat loss and physiological mechanisms (e.g., shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis) for heat production. Both types of changes require the participation of peripheral thermoreceptors, afferent signaling to the spinal cord and hypothalamus, and efferent pathways to motor and/or sympathetic neurons. The present review aims to analyze the scientific evidence of the hypothalamic control of h

Efficacy of Head and Torso Rewarming Using a Human Model for Severe Hypothermia.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the rewarming effectiveness of a similar amount of heat (from a charcoal heater) applied to either the head or torso in a human model for severe hypothermia in which shivering is pharmacologically inhibited in mildly hypothermic subjects. METHODS: Six male subjects were cooled on 3 different occasions, each in 8°C water for 60 min, or to a lowest core temperature of 35°C. Shivering was inhibited by intravenous meperidine (1.5 mg·kg-1), administered during the last 10 min of the cold-water immersion. Subjects then exited from the cold water, were dried, and were place

Pre Versus Post Implementation of a Pharmacologic Antishivering Protocol During Targeted Temperature Management Following Cardiac Arrest.

BACKGROUND: Targeted temperature management (TTM) is endorsed by various guidelines to improve neurologic outcomes following cardiac arrest. Shivering, a consequence of hypothermia, can counteract the benefits of TTM. Despite its frequent occurrence, consensus guidelines provide minimal guidance on the management of shivering. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a pharmacologic antishivering protocol in patients undergoing TTM following cardiac arrest on the incidence of shivering. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study at a large academic medical center of ad

Cholinergic urticaria following active forced-air warming in the post-anesthesia care unit: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Cholinergic urticaria (CU), a subtype of chronic inducible urticaria, is triggered by elevations in core body temperature. Postoperative shivering and active warming measures may increase core body temperature in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), yet CU in this setting remains underrecognized and has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an 18-year-old male who developed acute CU in the PACU following cochlear implantation under general anesthesia. After extubation, the patient exhibited postoperative shivering and was treated with a forced-air warming

The Role of Buspirone in Antishivering Protocols for Post-Cardiac Arrest Targeted Temperature Management: What Evidence Supports Its Use?

Shivering is a common complication of targeted temperature management (TTM), which could undermine its neuroprotective benefits by increasing cerebral oxygen consumption and metabolic demand. Buspirone, a 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist, is incorporated into many antishivering protocols for TTM following cardiac arrest, despite limited evidence supporting its efficacy in critically ill patients. We conducted a targeted literature review using PubMed to assess the evidence in favor of the use of buspirone in antishivering protocols during TTM. Differential changes in axonal conduction following CNS demyelination in two mouse models.

Transgenic and disease model mice have been used to investigate the molecular mechanisms of demyelinating diseases. However, less attention has been given to elucidating changes in nerve conduction in these mice. We established an experimental system to measure the response latency of cortical neurons and examined changes in nerve conduction in cuprizone-induced demyelinating mice and in myelin basic protein-deficient shiverer mice. Stimulating and recording electrodes were placed in the right and left sensori-motor cortices, respectively. Electrical stimulation of the right cortex evoked anti
