Family characteristics, responses, and dynamics associated with sibling sexual abuse: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is influenced by and occurs within an interconnected family system, because of this there is a growing move towards recognising SSA as a family issue. Families also play a vital role in the disclosure of SSA and in the aftermath of recovery. Nevertheless, a descriptive review consolidating the known family dynamics, characteristics, and responses associated with SSA is absent from research. OBJECTIVE: A scoping review was conducted to synthesise known family characteristics and dynamics associated with SSA. The review also sought to explore how families

Brain bioenergetics and redox state measured by 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy in unaffected siblings of patients with psychotic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Brain bioenergetic anomalies and redox dysregulation have been implicated in the pathophysiology of psychotic disorders. The present study examined brain energy-related metabolites and the balance between nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide metabolites (oxidized NAD+ and reduced NADH) using 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS) in unaffected siblings, compared to first episode psychosis (FEP) patients and healthy controls. METHODS: 21 unaffected siblings, 32 FEP patients (including schizophrenia spectrum and affective psychoses), and 21 controls underwent 31P-MRS in the fron

Self-regulation as a mediator between sibling relationship quality and early adolescents' positive and negative outcomes.

The current study examined the role of adolescents' self-regulation as a mediator between sibling relationship quality and adolescent outcomes, after controlling for the quality of the parent-child relationship. Participants were 395 families (282 two parent; 113 single parent) with an adolescent child (M age of child at Time 1 = 11.15, SD = .96, 49% female) who took part in [project name masked for blind review] at both Time 1 and Time 2. Path analysis via structural equation modeling suggested that sibling affection was longitudinally and positively related to self-regulation and prosocial b

Sibling and Best Friend Conflict Resolution Strategies Among Mexican-origin Youth.

Sibling relationships evolve into a more egalitarian relationship dynamic resembling friendships during adolescence, potentially facilitating the transfer of interpersonal skills across relationships. This study investigates cross-relationship associations in conflict resolution strategies with siblings and friends. Research on family-peer linkages, largely focused on White populations, often overlook the role of siblings in other ethnoracial contexts. Drawing on social learning theory, we examined mean-level differences on conflict resolution strategy use with siblings versus friends and how

Security of attachment and infant-sibling relationships: a laboratory study.

The relation between infant-sibling affective involvement and the attachment security of each child to the mother was examined in the present laboratory investigation. In mothers' presence, securely attached infants were less likely to protest and aggress against mothers and older siblings when mothers played only with the older child. In mothers' absence, more secure older siblings were more likely to respond to infant distress with caregiving than were less secure older siblings. Although infant attachment behavior to older siblings was rare, it occurred only when the older sibling was more

Echoes of autism in family life: Neurotypical siblings' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder impacts not only the diagnosed individual but also their family members, particularly neurotypical siblings. While international research on siblings of autistic individuals has expanded, studies in Türkiye remain scarce and predominantly quantitative. This study aimed to explore in depth the lived experiences of neurotypical siblings, focusing on family dynamics, sibling relationships, coping mechanisms, and social life. METHODS: A qualitative approach grounded in interpretative phenomenological analysis was adopted. 9 neurotypical siblings of individuals

Quality of Life and Comorbidities of Long-Term Survivors of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Versus Their Siblings.

Survivors of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) are known to be at risk of late toxicities. The spectrum of late toxicities may be impacted by changing allo-HCT practices: In contemporary allo-HCT practice, conditioning with high-dose total body irradiation is infrequent, the incidence of chronic GVHD is declining, and older adults receive allo-HCT more frequently. Few studies have examined the burden of comorbidities and the quality of life (QoL) of recent long-term survivors of allo-HCT, and even fewer have included a biological sibling control group for comparison. We

Firstborn's empathy and the sibling relationship quality: The moderating role of maternal emotional availability.

This study examined how a firstborn child's empathy interacts with maternal emotional availability (EA) to predict later positive sibling relationships. The study included 108 families expecting a second child who also had a 10- to 45-month-old firstborn child (M = 24.6 months, SD = 7.42; 58 girls). Before the second-born child arrived, the firstborn child's empathic abilities were measured, and a mother-child play interaction was videotaped and coded for maternal EA. At 16-18 months postpartum, mothers completed questionnaires assessing the quality of the sibling relationship. Maternal EA mod

Etiological Risk Factors for Sibling Incest: Data From an Anonymous Computer-Assisted Self-Interview.

Retrospective data from 1,821 women and 1,064 men with one or more siblings, provided anonymously using a computer-assisted self-interview, were used to identify risk factors for sibling incest (SI); 137 were participants in SI. In order of decreasing predictive power, the risk factors identified by the multiple logistic regression analysis included ever having shared a bed for sleeping with a sibling, parent-child incest (PCI), family nudity, low levels of maternal affection, and ever having shared a tub bath with a sibling. The results were consistent with the idea that SI in many families w

Risk of death in the long QT syndrome when a sibling has died.

BACKGROUND: Sudden death of a sibling is thought to be associated with greater risk of death in long QT syndrome (LQTS). However, there is no evidence of such an association. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to test the hypothesis that sudden death of a sibling is a risk factor for death or aborted cardiac arrest (ACA) in patients with LQTS. METHODS: We examined all probands and first-degree and second-degree relatives in the International Long QT Registry from birth to age 40 years with QTc >/= 0.45 s. Covariates included sibling death, QTc, gender by age, syncope, and implantable cardioverter-

Association between cognitive phenotype in unaffected siblings and prospective 3- and 6-year clinical outcome in their proband affected by psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive alterations are a central and heterogeneous trait in psychotic disorders, driven by environmental, familial and illness-related factors. In this study, we aimed to prospectively investigate the impact of high familial risk for cognitive alterations, unconfounded by illness-related factors, on symptomatic outcomes in patients. METHODS: In total, 629 probands with non-affective psychosis and their sibling not affected by psychosis were assessed at baseline, 3- and 6-year follow-up. Familial cognitive risk was modeled by three cognitive subtypes ('normal', 'mixed' and 'impa

Association of childhood infections and perinatal factors with ankylosing spondylitis: a Swedish nationwide case-control and sibling study.

OBJECTIVES: To identify perinatal and early-life risk factors for ankylosing spondylitis (AS), controlling for family-shared confounding with a sibling comparison design. METHODS: In this nationwide, register-based case-control study, we identified 5612 AS cases from the Swedish National Patient Register, and matched them with 22 042 individuals without inflammatory arthritis from the general population. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of AS in relation to childhood infections and a broad range of perinatal factors incl

Mediating Role of Emotion Regulation and Sibling Relationship Quality Among Young Adult Siblings of Individuals With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder.

PURPOSE: Siblings of autistic individuals (ASD-Sibs) report, on average, significantly less closeness and warmth in sibling relationships than siblings of non-disabled individuals (ND-Sibs). However, findings on other aspects of life satisfaction on well-being between ASD-Sibs and ND-sibs is more mixed. Therefore, understanding some potential mechanisms by which aspects of the sibling relationship relate to well-being for ASD-Sibs and ND-Sibs is needed. In particular, understanding how aspects of emotion regulation may relate to the sibling relationship may provide pathways for future support

Weighing poor immunometabolic health in relatives for severity of affective symptoms: A study of patients with depressive and anxiety disorders and their siblings.

BACKGROUND: Affective (i.e. depressive and anxiety) disorders often co-occur with immunometabolic diseases and related biological pathways. Although many large population-based and meta-analytic studies have confirmed this link in community and clinical samples, studies in at-risk samples of siblings of persons with affective disorders are lacking. Furthermore, this somatic-mental co-occurrence may be partially explained by familial clustering of the conditions. First, we examined whether the association between a wide range of immunometabolic diseases and related biomarker based risk-profiles
