A retrospective study of lymph node biopsy specimens from nine patients with the clinical findings and histologic features of cat scratch disease was undertaken to determine whether the recent report by Wear et al. that pleomorphic bacteria are present in the lymph nodes of cat scratch disease could be confirmed. Biofilm-associated wound infections require antibacterial materials that can control attached bacteria while limiting excessive silver exposure. In this study, we prepared a sponge-like hierarchical porous silver-carbon material through in situ glucose foaming and carbonization. Pneumocystis carinii organisms have been shown to persist throughout therapy in the majority of patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). This study evaluated the relationship between persistence of organisms and recurrence of disease, and the effect of chemoprophylaxis on bronchoalveolar lavage specimens. The substitution of lead nitrate for uranium nitrate as used in the Steiner silver impregnation method for demonstrating spirochetes in tissue sections is described. The use of lead nitrate provides a chemical substitute free of any potential radiation hazard without loss of staining specificity. The use of lead nitrate in place of uranium nitrate in the Dieterle method for staining Legionnaires' disease organisms is proposed.

Pulmonary infiltrates in immunocompromised patients frequently represent infections. This study was undertaken to evaluate cytologic examination of bronchoalveolar lavage samples and the value of different preparations and silver staining. Over 6 mo, 336 samples were collected from 155 immunosuppressed patients in whom both cytologic and microbiologic studies were performed. Here we report an unusual case of disseminated cryptococcosis in a patient with AIDS. Although typical Cryptococcus neoformans micromorphology was observed in tongue biopsy, cervical lymph node examination revealed atypical histopathologic findings. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Conjunctival rhinosporidiosis is an infectious disease rarely recorded outside the Indian subcontinent. The disease is caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, an endosporulating microorganism of uncertain taxonomic classification. We report a series of cases manifesting this infection.

A 12-year-old captive female cougar (Felis concolor) died following perforation of a gastric ulcer. Histologically, erosions and ulcers were present in the antral area of the stomach. Fibroplasia and infiltrates of neutrophils bordered the ulcers. Modified Steiner silver stain revealed numerous tightly coiled helical bacteria. The bacteria stained positively with a rabbit polyclonal anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody. Morphology, location, and positive immunohistochemical staining suggests that the organism is a Helicobacter.

Saksenaea vasiformis is an emerging zygomycete species, most often associated with cutaneous, subcutaneous and rhino- orbito-cerebral infections. Herein, we report a case of cutaneous zygomycosis of face caused by Saksenaea vasiformis in a 54-year-old immunocompetent female. The use of natural, nontoxic, convenient and eco-friendly dyes for histopathological diagnosis avoids some of the synthetic dyes' hazards. I used an aqueous extract of henna at a concentration of 20 g/ml and acidified with acetic acid to stain mycetoma grains. Henna stained mycetoma grains orange-red to brown. The engulfed mycetoma grains within inflammatory cells stained well with henna extract compared to hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) and hexamine silver.
