This article presents the results of glottal open-quotient measurements in the case of singing voice production. It explores the relationship between open quotient and laryngeal mechanisms, vocal intensity, and fundamental frequency. The audio and electroglottographic signals of 18 classically trained male and female singers were recorded and analyzed with regard to vocal intensity, fundamental frequency, and open quotient. Fundamental frequency and open quotient are derived from the differentiated electroglottographic signal, using the DECOM (DEgg Correlation-based Open quotient Measurement)

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease can be associated with speech deterioration and low communication confidence which in turn compromises social interaction. Therapeutic singing is an engaging method for combatting speech decline; however, face-to-face delivery can limit access to group singing. The aim of this study is to test the feasibility and acceptability of an online mode of delivery for a Parkinson's singing intervention (ParkinSong) as well as remote data collection procedures.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This ParkinSong Online feasibility trial is a single-arm, pre-post study of online sin

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The impact of body posture on vocal emission is well known. Postural changes may increase muscular resistance in tracts of the phono-articulatory apparatus and lead to voice disorders. This work aimed to assess whether and to which extent body posture during singing and playing a musical instrument impacts voice performance in professional musicians.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Voice signals were recorded from 17 professional musicians (pianists and guitarists) while they were singing and while they were singing and playing a musical instrument simultaneously. Metrics were extra

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explain the possible reason why classical singers seem to spread their nostrils and raise their cheeks before starting to sing.
STUDY DESIGN: This is an experimental study.
METHODS: Five subjects (three classical singers, two nonsingers) were investigated with nasofiberoscopy holding their breath after inhalation. The subjects were instructed to have a neutral expression first and then to take the singers' expression characterized by nostril flaring. In case of nonsingers, the special expression was rehearsed beforehand, guided by a classical singer. The follo

This investigation aims at describing voice function of four nonclassical styles of singing, Rock, Pop, Soul, and Swedish Dance Band. A male singer, professionally experienced in performing in these genres, sang representative tunes, both with their original lyrics and on the syllable /pae/. In addition, he sang tones in a triad pattern ranging from the pitch Bb2 to the pitch C4 on the syllable /pae/ in pressed and neutral phonation. An expert panel was successful in classifying the samples, thus suggesting that the samples were representative of the various styles. Subglottal pressure was est

Four women aged between 27 and 58 years sought otolaryngological examination due to significant alterations to their voices, the primary concerns being hoarseness in vocal quality, lowering of habitual pitch, difficulty projecting their speaking voices, and loss of control over their singing voices. Otolaryngological examination with a mirror or flexible laryngoscope revealed no apparent abnormality of vocal fold structure or function, and the women were referred for speech pathology with diagnoses of functional dysphonia. Objective acoustic measures using the Kay Visipitch indicated significa

Vocalizations are ancient behaviours that require the complex coordination of breath and display. Understanding how laryngeal anatomy shapes vocalization provides insights into this diversity, its mechanisms and their evolution. Rodents are ideal for exploring this variation because of their diverse mechanisms and vocal structures. Here, we describe the laryngeal morphology and sound production mechanisms underlying the vocalizations of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina) and compare these results to those of other vocalizing mammals. We reconstructed the three-dimensional laryngeal mo

Acoustic communication plays a central role in bird behavior, yet the ecological and social factors that shape the patterns of variable within-species bird vocalizations remain poorly understood. Here, we examined the singing and calling behavior of Dupont's lark (Chersophilus duponti), a threatened bird species, across individuals, populations, and spatial scales throughout most of its European distribution range, restricted to Spain. For both vocalization types, we assessed the influence of population size and recording location on individual and population repertoire sizes, described the sp

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by pruritic, dry, eczematous lesions. Traditionally regarded primarily as a cutaneous disorder influenced by genetic and environmental factors, AD is increasingly recognized as a multisystem condition involving immune, microbial, and neuroendocrine interactions.
OBJECTIVES: This review proposes the Skin-Immune-Neuro-Gastro-Endocrine (SINGE) network as a comprehensive framework to explore the interconnected pathophysiology of AD. The aim is to highlight how changes across various systems contribute to d

BACKGROUND: The impact of singing on cardiovascular health has not been extensively studied. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of singing on cardiovascular biomarkers in an aging population with coronary artery disease (CAD).
METHODS: Participants had three study visits separated by 2-7 days, according to a randomized, researcher-blinded, crossover, controlled design: (1) a 30-min period of live singing with an in-person music therapist, (2) a 30-min period of singing along to an instructional video and (3) a 30-min rest (control). Primary outcomes included macrovascular endo

Research on group singing has demonstrated numerous benefits to wellbeing including boosts in mood, increases in social bonding, and reductions in stress. These benefits can be achieved by individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD), a group that is especially at risk for social isolation given the typical decline in mobility and communication that accompanies neuromotor degeneration. Several mechanisms of action have been proposed to explain the benefits to wellbeing, with one prominent hypothesis emphasizing that interpersonal movement synchrony enhances feelings of social bonding. In the curr

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a rare but serious neurological condition characterized by headaches, seizures, vision disturbances, and altered mental status. While it is commonly associated with hypertensive disorders, including preeclampsia and eclampsia, its exact pathophysiology remains unclear. We discuss the cases of two obstetric patients diagnosed with PRES: one in antepartum and the other during postpartum. Both exhibited severe hypertension and neurological symptoms, confirmed with neuroimaging, requiring urgent intervention with blood pressure control and sei

BACKGROUND: Communication impairments significantly impact the quality of life for individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD), underscoring the need for effective interventions. Singing, by engaging shared neural networks and structural mechanisms involved in speech production, holds therapeutic potential for addressing speech disorders in this population. This study explores the effects of singing-based therapeutic intervention on voice in patients diagnosed with PD.
METHODS: We systematically searched four electronic databases to find relevant studies. Data extraction and analysis involved c

OBJECTIVE: Despite anecdotal evidence highlighting the benefits of singing teacher involvement in voice rehabilitation for effective and sustainable biopsychosocial treatment of vocal injury, singing teachers working as singing voice rehabilitation specialists (SVRS) in the United Kingdom (UK) have often been criticized for working beyond their scope of practice. With limited empirical research into the role, concern and confusion has fueled challenges to its legitimacy. The lack of regulation raises questions around safeguarding, skills, and demarcation of roles within the multidiscipline tea

BACKGROUND: Even though singing is regarded as potential jaw-overuse behaviour, the actual evidence that underlines the idea of singing as a predisposing factor for pain-related temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is very limited.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to examine if a dose-response relationship exists between the frequency of singing and TMD pain intensity, and if singing is associated with psychological well-being.
METHODS: The records of 1467 adult patients with functionally aggravated TMD pain were examined. Partial Spearman correlations were used to explore for associations betwe

In recent years, evidence has been provided that individuals with dyslexia show alterations in the anatomy and function of the auditory cortex. Dyslexia is considered to be a learning disability that affects the development of music and language capacity. We set out to test adolescents and young adults with dyslexia and controls (N = 52) for their neurophysiological differences by investigating the auditory evoked P1-N1-P2 complex. In addition, we assessed their ability in Mandarin, in singing, their musical talent and their individual differences in elementary auditory skills. A discriminant
