What do I look like? Perceptual confidence in bulimia nervosa.

Cognitive confidence, a type of metacognition referring to confidence in one's cognitive abilities (e.g., memory, perception, etc.), has been identified as relevant to eating disorders (EDs) using self-report measures. Repeated checking has been found to elicit decreases in perceptual confidence in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The purpose of the present study was to experimentally investigate perceptual confidence, a type of cognitive confidence, in EDs. Specifically, this construct was investigated in the context of body checking, a behaviour with similarities to compulsive checking a

Illness perceptions, self-care practices, and glycemic control among type 2 diabetes patients in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) is a fundamental aspect of diabetes care, but no standard program exists in Thailand. Understanding current patterns of illness perceptions (concerns) and self-management practices among patients with diabetes in Thailand is vital to develop culturally tailored DSME programs. This study sought to explore the association between reported self-management practices and diabetes perceptions on glycemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. Specifically, the study examined whether the association between i

An interactive training programme to treat body image disturbance.

OBJECTIVES: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a life-threatening mental health condition. A core feature is a disturbance of body image, such that sufferers see themselves as fatter than they actually are. DESIGN: We tested the effectiveness of a novel training programme to recalibrate our participants' perception of body size. METHODS: In a novel adaptation of a cognitive bias training programme, participants judged the body size of a series of female bodies and were given feedback to improve their accuracy over four daily training sessions. In Study 1, we recruited young women with high concerns ab

A preliminary analysis of the coordination of reaching, grasping, and walking.

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the strategies used by individuals when motor systems controlling locomotion and prehension must be used simultaneously to perform a task. Subjects were required to perform five tasks: walk normally, walk and pick up a small object, walk and pick up a large object, pick up a small object from a stationary standing position, and pick up a large object while standing. The grasping and walking movements were videotaped and the frequencies of various behaviors were observed (type of grasp, location of contact with the object, support leg during con

[Computer perimetry of glaucomatous visual field defects at different stimulus sizes (author's transl)].

The influence of stimulus size in computer perimetry of central visual field defects was investigated in 30 glaucomatous eyes of 30 patients. 12 eyes had been studied utilizing stimulus size 1 and 3, 18 eyes with stimulus size 3 and 5 at the computer perimeter Octopus (program 31). Using large test targets small scotomata can be overlooked and identified field defects appear smaller and less deep. To evaluate this well-known phenomenon quantitatively by computerized perimetry was the aim of the present study. The mean threshold values in the diseased areas of the glaucomatous fields were about

Computational models reveal that intuitive physics underlies visual processing of soft objects.

Computational explorations of human cognition have been especially successful when applied to visual perception. Existing models have primarily focused on rigid objects, emphasizing shape-preserving invariance to changes in viewpoint, lighting, object size, and scene context. Yet many objects in our everyday environments, such as cloths, are soft. This poses both quantitatively greater and qualitatively different challenges for models of perception, due to soft objects' dynamic and high-dimensional internal structure, as in the changing folds and wrinkles of a cloth waving in the wind. Soft ob

Factors Influencing Perception of Social Support among Patients with Advanced Cancer Receiving Palliative Care in Bangladesh.

The perception of social support among patients with advanced diseases is influenced by various factors. The socio-cultural context of Bangladesh significantly shapes the experience of patients with advanced cancer and their perception of social support. This study's aim was to assess the perceived social support by these patients and investigate the factors that shape their perception. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 115 advanced cancer patients admitted to the palliative medicine department of a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. Perceived social support was measured by the

Interrelations between the perception of time and space in large-scale environments.

Interactions between perceived temporal and spatial properties of external stimuli (e.g. duration and size) suggest common neural mechanisms underlying the perception of time and space. This conclusion, however, lacks support from studies in large-scale environments, showing that judgements on travelled distances and associated travel times are independent from each other. Here, we used a different approach to test whether the perception of travelled distances is influenced by the perception of time. Unlike previous studies, in which temporal and spatial judgements were related to the same exp

Developing a Climate Change Risk Perception Model in the Philippines and Fiji: Posttraumatic Growth Plays Central Role.

BACKGROUND: This two-study paper developed a climate change risk perception model that considers the role of posttraumatic growth (i.e., a reappraisal of life priorities and deeper appreciation of life), resource loss, posttraumatic stress, coping, and social support. METHOD: In Study 1, participants were 332 persons in the Philippines who experienced Super Typhoon Haiyan. In Study 2, participants were 709 persons in Fiji who experienced Cyclone Winston. Climate change can increase the size and destructive potential of cyclones and typhoons as a result of warming ocean temperatures, which pro

Demographic and COVID Experience Predictors of COVID-19 Risk Perception among Chinese Residents in Canada.

The current study aimed to identify demographic and COVID experience predictors for COVID-19 risk perception among Chinese residents in Canada. A final sample of 653 participants aged 18 and up completed an online survey in simplified Chinese during the peak of the first wave of COVID-19 (25 April-10 June 2020). After removing those with missing data on demographic covariates, as missing data cannot be imputed, 444 were included in the structural equation model, and COVID-19 risk perception was indexed by three outcome variables: self-infection risk perception (i.e., likelihood of personal inf

Self-motion illusions from distorted optic flow in multifocal glasses.

Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are ophthalmic lenses to correct presbyopia by providing improvements of near and far vision in different areas of the lens, but distorting the periphery of the wearer's field of view. Distortion-related difficulties reported by PAL wearers include unnatural self-motion perception. Visual self-motion perception is guided by optic flow, the pattern of retinal motion produced by self-motion. We tested the influence of PAL distortions on optic flow-based heading estimation using a model of heading perception and a virtual reality-based psychophysical experiment.

Studies on visual perception of locomotion.

The problem about visual discrimination between seeing objects in motion and perception of motion of the perceiver (locomotion) was taken up. A flow of vertical motion was presented to limited areas of the far periphery (45 degrees-90 degrees) of the retina simultaneously with optical information about a stationary room over the rest of the retina. The result was that most subjects perceived themselves as sitting in an elevator continuously moving upward or downward. Thus, peripheral motion stimulation over a few percent of the retinal area determines locomotion perception in apparent competit

Variations in Current and Desired Limb Perception in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: People with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) often experience body perception disturbances, whereby features of the affected limb are perceived as distorted. However, these disturbances vary widely between individuals, as does the effectiveness of treatments aimed at altering body perception. It remains unclear whether such variation reflects distinct underlying patterns of disturbances and whether individuals differ in how they would change their limb perception. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory online survey to examine current and desired perceptions of the affected lim

Clinical and experimental evidence that the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) is generated in more proximal retinal layers than the focal electroretinogram (FERG).

A TV monitor was used to evoke either a pattern ERG to a contrast-reversing checkerboard (PERG), or a focal ERG to alternate increases and decreases of luminance of the blank screen within a bright surround (FERG). Both responses are small (approx 2 microV) and fast (approx 50 msec to peak) and are similar in several other properties. However, they differ in timing and respond differently to changes in contrast. Each frame of a TV picture evokes a "raster ERG," even though the screen is blank. The response is focal and specific to a small central strip of the screen. It is simpler to record th

Nonsymbolic-Magnitude Deficit in Adults With Developmental Dyscalculia: Evidence of Impaired Size Discrimination but Intact Size Constancy.

Although researchers have debated whether a core deficit of nonsymbolic representation of magnitude underlies developmental dyscalculia (DD), research has mostly focused on numerosity processing. We probed the possibility of a general magnitude deficit in individuals with DD and asked whether sensitivity to size varied in contexts of depth ordering and size constancy. We measured full psychometric functions in size-discrimination tasks in 12 participants with DD and 13 control participants. Results showed that although people with DD exhibited veridical perceived magnitude, their sensitivity t

Conscious vision for action versus unconscious vision for action?

David Milner and Melvyn Goodale's dissociation hypothesis is commonly taken to state that there are two functionally specialized cortical streams of visual processing originating in striate (V1) cortex: a dorsal, action-related "unconscious" stream and a ventral, perception-related "conscious" stream. As Milner and Goodale acknowledge, findings from blindsight studies suggest a more sophisticated picture that replaces the distinction between unconscious vision for action and conscious vision for perception with a tripartite division between unconscious vision for action, conscious vision for p

Near-optimal Integration of Magnitude in the Human Parietal Cortex.

Humans are often observed to make optimal sensorimotor decisions but to be poor judges of situations involving explicit estimation of magnitudes or numerical quantities. For example, when drawing conclusions from data, humans tend to neglect the size of the sample from which it was collected. Here, we asked whether this sample size neglect is a general property of human decisions and investigated its neural implementation. Participants viewed eight discrete visual arrays (samples) depicting variable numbers of blue and pink balls. They then judged whether the samples were being drawn from an u
