Determinants of nitrogen dioxide concentrations in indoor ice skating rinks.

OBJECTIVES: The combination of poor ventilation and fuel-powered ice resurfacers has resulted in elevated nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in many indoor ice skating rinks. This study examined the factors influencing concentrations and the effects of various engineering controls in ice rinks with different resurfacer fuels. METHODS: Indoor NO2 concentrations were measured in 19 enclosed ice skating rinks over 3 winters by means of passive samplers, with 1-week average measurements during the first winter pilot study and single-day working-hour measurements in the final 2 winters. Physiological comparison of roller skating, treadmill running and ergometer cycling.

This study was undertaken to determine the metabolic and cardiorespiratory differences between treadmill running, ergometer cycling and roller skating in top level roller skaters. The subjects performed 3 discontinuous graded tests until exhaustion. The protocol was established so that heart rate kinetics during exercise were similar in all the tests. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), maximal heart rate and exercise time to exhaustion were higher during running (p < 0.05) than during cycling. Blood lactate during submaximal and maximal running exercise was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than dur

[Roller skating accidents. 393 roller skating accidents treated at the casualty department of Odense Hospital during the period 1 January 1980 to 30 September 1988].

During recent years, the import of roller skates has increased markedly and, during the period 1.1.1980-30.9.1988, an increase has been observed in the number of roller skate accidents treated in the Casualty Department of Odense Hospital. These accidents are particularly frequent in early spring and involve children under the age of 15 years, in particular, with slight preponderance of girls. The typical mechanism of injury is a fall which the victim tries to mitigate with the hands and arms. Nearly 90% of all injuries were localized to the locomotor system and just under half of the patients

Creating performance benchmarks for the future elites in speed skating.

Sports performance benchmarks useful to select and guide future elites are limited in literature. The present study introduces a method to enable comparison between sports performance of different generations and creates performance benchmarks for the future elites in speed skating. 1500 m Season Best Times (SBT) of Dutch skaters (1043 females, 1812 males, age 13-26 years), who competed in at least six seasons between 1993 and 2013, were corrected for the prevailing world record (WR): rSBT=(SBT/WR)*100%. Regression analyses showed that the calendar year affected SBT (p<0.01), but not rSBT (p>0

The physiological and biomechanical contributions of poling to roller ski skating.

Poling is considered to make a significant contribution to cross-country skiing with the skating technique. To better understand this contribution, the current investigation compared roller ski skating on a treadmill with the so-called G3 skating technique with (G3-P) and without poling (G3-NP). Seven male elite skiers performed 5-min submaximal tests at 8, 12, and 15 km h(-1), as well as an incremental test to exhaustion with both techniques on a 5 % incline. Ventilatory variables were assessed by open-circuit indirect calorimetry and three-dimensional kinematics analyzed using the Qualisys P

The accumulation and synthesis of betaine in winter skate (Leucoraja ocellata).

The present study investigated aspects of betaine metabolism in an elasmobranch fish, the winter skate (Leucoraja ocellata). Based on the level of choline dehydrogenase (ChoDH) activity, the liver and kidney appear to be the major sites of betaine synthesis and the mitochondrial localization of ChoDH and betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH) indicates that the metabolic organization of betaine synthesis in winter skate is similar to other vertebrates. Food deprivation did not affect white muscle betaine content, and prolonged starvation (70 days) appeared to decrease the total hepatic betaine

The effects of articulated figure skates on jump landing forces.

Lower extremity injuries in figure skating have long been linked to skating boot stiffness, and recent increases in jump practice time may be influencing the frequency and seriousness of these injuries. It is hypothesized that stiff boots compromise skaters' abilities to attenuate jump landing forces. Decreasing boot stiffness by adding an articulation at the ankle may reduce the rate and magnitude of landing forces. Prototype articulated figure skating boots were tested in this study to determine their effectiveness in enabling skaters to land with lower peak impact forces. Nine competitive f

In-line skating injuries in children: a 10-year review.

In-line skating is an increasingly popular recreational activity for both children and adults. As with any high-speed sport, traumatic injury is an associated hazard. It was the purpose of this study to focus on the injuries in children associated specifically with in-line skating with an emphasis on education and prevention. During a 9-year period, 331 injuries were identified, with 105 families completing an in-depth epidemiologic questionnaire. Sixty-one percent of the victims were boys, with an overall average age of 12 years. The upper extremity was most commonly injured (64%); the head a

In-line skating: physiological responses and comparison with roller skiing.

The use of in-line skates has become popular in recent years for recreational and conditioning purposes. This investigation evaluated the physiological responses of ten subjects during in-line skating on a flat track with three different in-line skating techniques. The double pole technique demonstrated the greatest economy with oxygen uptake requirements that were approximately 12% lower (p less than 0.05) than conventional skating (without poles) or the V1 skate technique. Across the investigated velocity spectrum of 14.6 to 18.0 km.h-1, individuals with an average fitness level of 40 ml.kg-

Structural features and adaptive properties of photoreceptors in the skate retina.

In the duplex (rod/cone) retinae of most vertebrates, electrical responses associated with nocturnal vision can be recorded in relative isolation only over a limited intensity range before there is encroachment by signals from the cone system; e.g., at mesopic levels of illumination, the rods begin to saturate, and the cone mechanism is brought into play. On the other hand, the retinae of some sub-species of skate appear to contain only one class of photoreceptors, namely rods. Nevertheless, skate photoreceptors, as well as other retinal neurons, are able to respond to incremental stimuli pres

Moments of force, power, and muscle coordination in speed-skating.

Two well-trained speed-skaters were subjected to a biomechanical analysis incorporating push-off forces, cinematographic data, and link segment modeling. To gain knowledge on the backgrounds on technique and performance in speed-skating, the muscle coordination was studied by EMG and muscle contraction velocities. In speed-skating during the push-off, the body center of gravity (cg) is accelerated with respect to the point of application of the push-off force, with a forward gliding skate. The velocity of cg is a result of rotation of segments. Due to the absence of plantar flexion of the foot

Effects of Technique Asymmetry on 500 m Speed Skating Performance.

This study aimed to determine the effects of technique asymmetry on 500 m straight-track speed skating performance. We analyzed 20 elite skaters, measuring their joint angles, center of mass shift, and times and speeds during the gliding and push-off phases. The technique asymmetry index (ASI) was calculated for each parameter, and paired t-tests were used to compare bilateral asymmetry. Spearman correlation coefficients assessed the relationship between the ASI and both the average straight track speed and overall performance. Significant bilateral asymmetries in the knee, push-off, trunk, an
