Developmental and Evolutionary Allometry of the Mammalian Limb Skeleton.

The variety of limb skeletal proportions enables a remarkable diversity of behaviors that include powered flight in bats and flipper-propelled swimming in whales using extremes of a range of homologous limb architectures. Even within human limbs, bone lengths span more than an order of magnitude from the short finger and toe bones to the long arm and leg bones. Yet all of this diversity arises from embryonic skeletal elements that are each a very similar size at formation. In this review article, I survey what is and is not yet known of the development and evolution of skeletal proportion at m

[The fibrous skeleton of the hand : Changes with Dupuytren's contracture].

The exact knowledge of the anatomy of the fibrous skeleton of the hand is an absolute prerequisite for any treatment of Dupuytren's disease. The fibrous skeleton does not only include the palmar aponeurosis, but also numerous retinacula cutis, which are not found in current anatomy books. Here, eponyms facilitate the otherwise difficult and over-pronounced names of the fiber systems. Skoog, Legueu and Juvara, Gosset, Grapow, Grayson, Cleland, Thomine, and Barton are the most important. This systematic review of the fibers and strands is designed to help reduce iatrogenic complications.

[Mechanisms of growth, development and disease of the craniofacial skeleton].

Craniofacial skeleton is derived from several pieces of bone, which hold the brain and house the sensory organ of vision, hearing, taste and smell. It also serves as an entrance of the digestive and respiratory tracts. Hence, craniofacial complex develops under sophisticated balance between the shape and the function. Disruption of such balance leads to various types of malformation and/or deformation of the face. This review focuses on the molecular aspects of growth and developments of the craniofacial structures and also on the genetic basis of congenital craniofacial malformations.

Sclerosing bone dysplasias with involvement of the craniofacial skeleton.

In this review we provide a complete overview of the existing sclerosing bone dysplasias with craniofacial involvement. Clinical presentation, disease course, the craniofacial symptoms, genetic transmission pattern and pathophysiology are discussed. There is an emphasis on radiologic features with a large collection of CT and MRI images. In previous reviews the craniofacial area of the sclerosing bone dysplasias was underexposed. However, craniofacial symptoms are often the first symptoms to address a physician. The embryology of the skull and skull base is explained and illustrated for a bett

Impact of the environment on the skeleton: is it modulated by genetic factors?

The etiology of skeletal disease is driven by genetic and environmental factors. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of osteoporotic phenotypes have identified novel candidate genes, but have only uncovered a small proportion of the trait variance explained. This "missing heritability" is caused by several factors, including the failure to consider gene-by-environmental (G*E) interactions. Some G*E interactions have been investigated, but new approaches to integrate environmental data into genomic studies are needed. Advances in genotyping and meta-analysis techniques now allow combining ge

Integration of parts in the facial skeleton and cervical vertebrae.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to undertake an exploratory analysis of the relationship among parts in the facial skeleton and cervical vertebrae and their integration as 2-dimensional shapes by determining their individual variations and covariations. The study was motivated by considerations applicable to clinical orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery, in which such relationships bear directly on pretreatment analysis and assessment of posttreatment outcome. METHODS: Lateral radiographs of 61 adolescents of both sexes without major malocclusions were digitized and marked up by

The proteome of the insoluble Schistosoma mansoni eggshell skeleton.

In schistosomiasis, the majority of symptoms of the disease is caused by the eggs that are trapped in the liver. These eggs elicit an immune reaction that leads to the formation of granulomas. The eggshell, which is a rigid insoluble structure built from cross-linked proteins, is the site of direct interaction between the egg and the immune system. However, the exact protein composition of the insoluble eggshell was previously unknown. To identify the proteins of the eggshell of Schistosoma mansoni we performed LC-MS/MS analysis, immunostaining and amino acid analysis on eggshell fragments. Fo

Advances in surgical approaches to the upper facial skeleton.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Surgical approaches to the upper facial skeleton comprise the coronal, lower eyelid and midface degloving approaches. These are routinely employed in both ablative and reconstructive craniofacial procedures. The ability to perform them in a well tolerated and predictable manner is predicated on knowledge of the indications and the exposure afforded by each approach, detailed appreciation of the anatomy and awareness of potential complications. This article reviews the literature for recent advancements and surgical refinements for each approach. RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple st

Pedal symphalangism in modern American and Japanese skeletons.

Pedal symphalangism is a surprisingly common heritable trait of the human foot. In individuals exhibiting the trait, the joint between the intermediate and distal phalanges of one or more lateral toes never develops, resulting in toes with two phalanges rather than three. This study was undertaken to explore variation in the frequency of pedal symphalangism among groups with widely different geographic ancestry, and to consider the applicability of this trait to skeletal biological distance studies. A total of 460 Euro-American, 191 African-American and 99 Japanese skeletons were examined for

Specification and morphogenesis of the zebrafish larval head skeleton.

Forward genetic analyses can reveal important developmental regulatory genes and how they function to pattern morphology. This is because a mutated gene can produce a novel, sometimes beautiful, phenotype that, like the normal phenotype, immediately seems worth understanding. Generally the loss-of-function mutant phenotype is simplified from the wild-type one, and often the nature of the pattern simplification allows one to deduce how the wild-type gene contributes to patterning the normal, more complex, morphology. This truism seems no less valid for the vertebrate head skeleton than for othe

Incorporation of composite bone implants in the facial skeleton.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the capacity of composite grafts consisting of either particulated cancellous or particulated cortical bone and anorganic bovine bone mineral (BBM) (Bio-Oss) to induce regeneration in standardized critical size bony defects overlying the frontal sinus. Four full thickness critical size bone defects were made in the frontal bone in each of 8 skeletally mature female goats. These defects were filled at random with composite cancellous bone/BBM grafts or composite cortical bone/BBM grafts. Control defects were not included but could be evaluated using dat

Bioceramics as an option in correction of facial skeleton deformities.

The removal of certain deformities of facial bones is a prerequisite to a restoration of function, stability, and appearance. Synthetic bone substitutes are beneficial in cases where other operative technique would represent an inadequate burden for a patient. A result is achieved in one surgical intervention with low costs and low demands on technical equipment. Biocompatible nonresorbable glass-ceramics based on oxyfluoroapatite and wollastonite presenting osteoconductivity permits osteointegration, i.e., direct physicochemical bonds between live bone tissue and the implant without formation

Incorporation of particulated bone implants in the facial skeleton.

The purpose of this study was to compare the regenerative response of autogenous cortical and cancellous bone chips and a natural particulate resorbable bone mineral (RBM) (Bio-Oss, Geistlich-Pharma, Wolhusen, Switzerland) in standardized bony defects relating paranasal sinuses to one another and to bone blocks. On 13 skeletally mature female goats four standardized critical-sized full thickness bone defects were made in the frontal bone overlying the frontal sinus. These defects were filled at random with cortical bone chips, cancellous bone chips, spongiosa granules of a RBM or left empty. F

The use of bone grafts in the upper craniomaxillofacial skeleton.

While a plethora of new biologic and alloplastic materials are available for reconstruction of defects in the upper craniomaxillofacial skeleton, the role of free non-vascularized bone grafts remains an important one. In this review, this role will be defined in detail using case presentations to demonstrate a variety of ways in which such bone grafts may be helpful in reconstructing various facial skeletal defects.

Anomalies of craniofacial skeleton and teeth in cleidocranial dysplasia.

Mutations involving the transcription factor CBFA1 cause cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) in man. Recently, a mouse model of CCD has been generated (Cbfal +/-) [Komori et al., 1997], and disturbances of osteoclast differentiation have been documented. It has been shown that these animals exhibit hypoplastic clavicles and nasal bones, and retarded ossification of parietal, interparietal, and supraoccipital bones. Humans with CCD show all these features, including severely retarded ossification of the cranial base, strongly suggesting that both intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossifica

The role of Pax-1 in axial skeleton development.

Previous studies have identified a single amino-acid substitution in the transcriptional regulator Pax-1 as the cause of the mouse skeletal mutant undulated (un). To evaluate the role of Pax-1 in the formation of the axial skeleton we have studied Pax-1 protein expression in early sclerotome cells and during subsequent embryonic development, and we have characterized the phenotype of three different Pax-1 mouse mutants, un, undulated-extensive (unex) and Undulated short-tail (Uns). In the Uns mutation the whole Pax-1 locus is deleted, resulting in the complete absence of Pax-1 protein in these

Ontogeny of the skeleton of Spea bombifrons (anura: Pelobatidae).

The developing skeleton of a pelobatid frog, Spea bombifrons, is described based on a series of 81 cleared-and-stained tadpoles and juveniles. Most limb and limb-girdle elements commence ossification premetamorphically, along with the parasphenoid, frontoparietals, exoccipitals, and vertebral column, during Gosner Stage 36. The chondrocranium undergoes dramatic restructuring at the beginning of metamorphosis (ca. Stage 40); and the nasal cartilages, prootics, premaxillae, nasals, maxillae, septomaxillae, and ischium appear. Near the end of metamorphosis (ca. Stage 44), the branchial arches are
