Plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell neoplasm. Whether solitary or associated with multiple myeloma (MM), it rarely involves the skull base, particularly the sphenoid bone. We present a unique case of sphenoid bone plasmacytoma secondary to MM, highlighting diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. A 56-year-old female presented with headaches, vomiting, epistaxis, and cranial nerve deficits. Cerebral imaging revealed a 65-mm tumor infiltrating the sphenoid bone and adjacent structures. Subtotal resection was performed using an endoscopic nasal approach. Histopathology revealed plasmacytoma, and di

The most common cause of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhoea is damage to the skull base with a dura mater's rupture due to an accident or an iatrogenic injury. This applies to over 96% of cases. Other possibilities that can lead to CSF leakage are neoplasms of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. Although prostate cancer spreads to bones, cranial metastases to paranasal sinuses are extremely rare. We present a case of an 83-year-old patient with CSF leakage due to infiltrating metastatic prostate cancer. Cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea turned out to be the first symptom of p

Bone hemangioma accounts for approximately 1% of all bone neoplasms and commonly occurs in the vertebral body and skull. However, costal hemangiomas are extremely rare. We herein present a case involving a 52-year-old woman with a hemangioma in the third rib and review 29 cases of rib hemangiomas available in the literature. Rib hemangioma mainly affects women in their 50s and has expansile osteolytic features in radiographs and a weak maximum standardized uptake value in 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography images. When these findings are displayed, clinicians should include ri

BACKGROUND: Salivary ductal carcinoma (SDC) of parotid gland is a rare and aggressive entity; accounting for 1-3 % of all malignant salivary gland tumors, 0.2 % of epithelial salivary gland neoplasms, 0.5 % of salivary gland carcinomas, and 1.1 % of parotid gland carcinomas. Here in we aimed to evaluate the clinico-pathological features and treatment outcomes of parotid gland SDC in Saudi population.
METHODS: Among 38 patients with parotid malignancies, who were treated in two major tertiary care referral cancer centers between December 2007 and December 2014, seven cases (18.4 %) were found

Intracranial chondromas are rare, benign neoplasms representing only 0.2%-0.3% of neoplastic intracranial lesions. They commonly originate from the skull base but can infrequently arise from the falx, convexity dura, or ventricular ependyma. Diagnosis requires histopathologic confirmation, as patients present with nonspecific symptoms related to mass effect, and imaging characteristics often resemble meningiomas, oligodendrogliomas, and vascular malformations. We describe the case of a patient harboring a parafalcine dural chondroma that was discovered incidentally and was managed surgically a

Intracranial chondrosarcomas are cartilaginous tumours that are extremely rare with an estimated incidence of less than 0.16% of all intracranial neoplasms. They arise from the skull base synchondrosis or exceptionally from cartilaginous rests within the dura mater. This kind of tumours presents clinical features mimicking meningiomas, with symptoms secondary to mass effect (increased intracranial pressure, local brain dysfunction, cranial nerve palsies) and seizures. Intracranial chondrosarcomas are more frequently seen between 3 months and 76 years of age, with a peak around the third decade

Dissemination of gliomas outside the central nervous system without preceding neurosurgery is a rare phenomenon. Glial neoplasms presenting as bone lesions are even more rare. A case of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) with initial presentation in the orbit following a single generalized seizure is described. Signs of intracranial hypertension resulted from subarachnoid tumor invasion. The patient was treated with whole-dose radiation therapy but survived for only 6 months following the initial presentation. An autopsy revealed a right temporal GBM with extensive subarachnoid spread and invasion

Among malignant neoplasms of the sino-nasal tract, tumors of the nasal vault have special features: their higher incidence in woodworkers, their frequent local recurrence and invasiveness in the skull base. Histologically too, they are peculiar by the predominance of the glandular tumors, of colonic or enteric type especially. Microscopic examination allows histological grading of these adenocarcinoma. Squamous carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma are less frequent than in other parts of the sinonasal tract. Rare other tumors, often undifferentiated, can be diagnosed by immuno-staining as es

BACKGROUND: Because of their deep location surrounded by closed numerous neurovascular structures, skull base tumors of the cavernous sinus are still difficult to manage. Recently, the endoscopic endonasal approach commonly used for pituitary tumor resection has been "expanded" to the parasellar, infratemporal and orbital compartments with some advantages compared to the intracranial route.
METHODS: The authors reported the case of a 49-year-old male presenting a large extradural tumor of the left cavernous sinus with extensions toward the orbit, sphenoid sinus and infratemporal fossa. His op

PURPOSE: To define the optimal treatment and outcomes for patients with solitary plasmacytoma of bone and soft tissue.
METHODS: Review of the literature.
RESULTS: Solitary plasmacytomas are uncommon and account for less than 5% of plasma cell neoplasms. Solitary plasmacytomas of bone (SPB) usually occur in the vertebra and skull and are more common than extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMP) that almost always arise in the head and neck and may spread to regional lymph nodes. The optimal treatment is moderate-dose radiotherapy (40-50 Gy) and occasionally surgery. Adjuvant chemotherapy does not i

Chordoma is a rare tumor arising in the sacrum, clivus, or vertebrae. It is often not completely resectable and shows a high incidence of recurrence and progression with shortened patient survival and impaired quality of life. Chemotherapeutic options are limited to investigational therapies at present. Therefore, adjuvant therapy for control of tumor recurrence and progression is of great interest, especially in skull base lesions where complete tumor resection is often not possible because of the proximity of cranial nerves. To understand the extent of genetic instability and associated chro

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell tumors are rare neoplasms, which include extramedullary plasmacytoma, solitary plasmacytoma of the bone, and multiple myeloma. Although indistinguishable histopathologically, these entities need to be differentiated as treatment and prognosis vary.
METHODS: This study was conducted by retrospective chart review and correspondence with patients diagnosed to have plasma cell tumors of the skull from 1992 to 2004. The clinico-diagnostic investigations, treatment, and subsequent follow-up of the patients were obtained.
RESULTS: We report 5 cases of plasma cell tumors of t

The clinical, pathologic, and imaging characteristics of clival chordomas in 14 patients who underwent magnetic resonance examinations were evaluated. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was compared with skull series, tomography, computed tomography (CT), and magnification angiography in the diagnosis of clival chordomas. Although all examinations were highly sensitive for the detection of clival chordomas, MRI was the best single study because of its ability to image in orthogonal planes, its excellent soft-tissue contrast, and its demonstration of the relationship between the neoplasm and regi

BACKGROUND: Chordomas are rare neoplasms derived from the notochord, primarily affecting the skull base and sacral regions. While cranial nerve deficits are common, CSF rhinorrhea as an initial symptom is rare. Ecchordosis physaliphora (EP), another notochord-derived lesion, is typically asymptomatic but may also be present with CSF leakage. Differentiating between these entities remains challenging due to overlapping histopathological and imaging features.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the case of a woman in her 50s with persistent CSF rhinorrhea for 4 months. Imaging revealed a central c

We report the case of a 7-month-old female patient who developed acute megakaryoblastic leukemia 6 months after the appearance of skull bone lesions. Initial evaluation and diagnosis of this patient were challenging and only achieved thanks to genomic analysis by NGS (next generation sequencing). It is unusual for the initial manifestation of acute megakaryoblastic leukemia to be a skull bone lesion. Extramedullary acute myeloid leukemia (eAML), also known as myeloid sarcoma (MS), often occurs simultaneously with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), although it may precede AML. Genomic analysis based

BACKGROUND: Invasive pituitary adenomas involving the skull base are difficult to distinguish from other, more aggressive tumors. Intraoperaive diagnoses are crucial for deciding the course of treatment.
CASE: A large mass extending from the sella turcica to the sphenoid sinus and nasopharynx was identified in a 42-year-old male. Because of the lack of endocrine abnormalities and lack of an apparent rise in pituitary hormones, preoperative diagnoses included chordoma, chondrosarcoma, meningioma and pituitary adenoma. Tumor fragments were easily squeezed into a thin layer of cells for cytologi

Introduction: Glomangiopericytoma (GPC) is a rare type of neoplasm with hemangiopericytoma-like vasculature and perivascular hyalinization of capillary-sized veins. CD34 and S100 protein staining might be positive in a small percentage of GPC. Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) present clinically like GPC. However, challenges remain when differentiating GPC from SFT. Case Presentation: A 37-year-old male, smoker, presented with 3 years history of right-sided epistaxis and nasal congestion. He was also complaining of hyposmia but no headaches or visual complaints. On nasal endoscopy, he was found t

BACKGROUND: Primary pituitary melanocytoma, an exceedingly rare tumor, may resemble pituitary adenoma with apoplexy owing to its heterogeneous melanin concentration and possible hemorrhagic events. An accurate diagnosis of melanocytoma is, therefore, essential.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 31-year-old female patient who exhibited a progressively worsening headache that commenced one month prior. MRI showed a significantly enlarged sella turcica with a gourd-shaped lesion that had a mixture of short T1 and T2 signals. In conjunction with the MRI findings, CT scans, both non-contra
