Breakdown of the blood-retinal barriers and cystoid macular edema.

After reviewing the definition, incidence and main etiologic factors of cystoid macular edema (CME) the authors analyze the structural and physiologic characteristics of the macular area, including the blood-retinal barriers, and the basic concepts of retinal edema. Personal observations on three different groups of diseases associated with CME, retinitis pigmentosa, pars planitis and aphakia, are presented. CME evaluation was made by slit-lamp microscopy, fluorescein angiography and vitreous fluorophotometry. In the situations examined, the main factors involved in CME formation appear to be

Smartphone-based Video of Demodex folliculorum In Biopsied Human Eyelash Follicles.

The ability of smartphone technology to document static microscopy images has been well documented and is gaining widespread use in ophthalmology, where slit-lamp biomicroscopy is frequently utilized. However, little has been described regarding the use of smartphone technology to relay video of tissue microscopy results to patients, particularly when a tissue sample integrates motility of organisms as a characteristic feature of the disease. Here, we describe the method to use smartphone video to document motility of Demodex folliculorum in human eyelashes, individual results of which can be

Disulfiram inhibits IL-1β secretion and inflammatory cells recruitment in Aspergillus fumigatus keratitis.

PURPOSE: Disulfiram, an inhibitor of gasdermin D-induced pore formation, is known to suppress interleukin (IL)-1β secretion and pyroptosis. However, its effects on fungal keratitis remain unknown. Therefore, we investigated the role of disulfiram in Aspergillus fumigatus keratitis. METHODS: In vitro, Cell Count Kit-8 (CCK8) assay and cell scratch test were performed to determine optimal concentration. In vivo and in vitro experiments were conducted in a mouse model, human neutrophils, and mouse peritoneal macrophages. We pre-treated the mice or cells with disulfiram and infected them with A.

Subepithelial white deposition in the cornea associated with silicone oil and surgical management: a case report.

A 36-year-old patient presented with a complaint of an extensive "white scar" in his right eye without pain after silicone oil presence in the vitreous cavity for 12 years. Slit-lamp microscopy revealed extensive corneal leukoplakia and mild limbus neovascularization. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography revealed marked eccentric thickening of the subepithelium and normal thickness of the stroma. We proceeded with silicone oil removal and intraocular and anterior chamber lavage at first, followed by epithelial lesion excision combined with amniotic membrane transplantation 3 months la

Posterior amorphous corneal dysgenesis.

PURPOSE: Posterior amorphous corneal dysgenesis is a rare disorder previously described in only four families. We expanded the spectrum of findings and updated the classification by adding seven additional cases. METHODS: Three index cases were identified during ophthalmic examination at the El Maghraby Eye Hospital and Eye Center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. We examined all available members of three families of different ethnic origin (Saudi Arabian, Egyptian, and Indian) and found seven cases of affected patients. Videokeratography and slit-lamp photomicrography were done in selected cases. R

[Two cases of posterior keratoconus].

We studied 3 eyes from 2 patients with posterior keratoconus. One patient (a 17-year-old female) had posterior keratoconus bilaterally and the other (a 8-year-old male) had posterior keratoconus in one eye and Peters' anomaly in the contralateral eye. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy disclosed localized thinning with stromal haze underlying the endothelium in the central cornea. Photokeratoscopy revealed no abnormalities suggestive of anterior keratoconus. Wide-field specular microscopy showed the endothelial cells with normal cell density (approximately 3500 cells/mm2) and morphology in both the perip

Clinical multimodal Brillouin microscopy-optical coherence elastography system for lens biomechanics.

SIGNIFICANCE: Estimating biomechanical properties of the in vivo crystalline lens remains a challenge and is a barrier to evaluating novel lens softening therapies. There is a need to estimate quantitative biomechanical properties of the human anterior and mid segments of the eye in vivo for conditions such as presbyopia. AIM: We aim to develop a multimodal elastography device that enables high-performance sequential 3D imaging with both Brillouin microscopy and optical coherence elastography (OCE). APPROACH: We combined Brillouin spectroscopy and OCE on a modified slit lamp platform for hum

Bilateral mantle cell lymphoma of the ciliary body that responded to a combined local radiotherapy and chemotherapy regimen: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that often affects men over the age of 60. Systemic metastasis of MCL to eyes is rare and intraocular involvement is even rarer, which usually affects the choroid and iris. To the best of our knowledge, ciliary body metastasis of systemic MCL has not been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old Han Chinese male with past-history of systemic MCL complained of redness, pain and blurred vision in the left eye. Ocular examination revealed a normal appearance in the right eye, and conjunctival injecti

[Rare presentation of a scleral nevus with progression in size].

A 52-year-old male caucasian patient presented with a limbal subconjunctival pigmentation of unknown origin with progressive enlargement over the past years. Differential diagnoses included a malignant melanocytic lesion; therefore, an excisional biopsy was performed. Prior investigations showed no ciliary body or anterior chamber angle involvement. Histological and immunohistochemical analysis revealed the rare diagnosis of a scleral nevus. The clinical, histological and immunohistochemical findings as well as the relevant differential diagnoses are discussed.

Inter-visit variability of conjunctival microvascular hemodynamic measurements in healthy and diabetic retinopathy subjects.

Conjunctival microcirculation imaging provides a non-invasive means for detecting hemodynamic alterations due to systemic and ocular diseases. However, reliable longitudinal monitoring of hemodynamic changes due to disease progression requires establishment of measurement variability over time. The purpose of the current study was to determine inter-visit variability of conjunctival microvascular hemodynamic measurements in non-diabetic control (NC, N = 7) and diabetic retinopathy (DR, N = 10) subjects. Conjunctival microvascular imaging was performed during 2 visits, which were 17 ± 12 weeks
