Older adult drug overdose: an application of latent class analysis to identify prevention opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Older adult overdose death rates have increased significantly in recent years. However, research for prevention of drug overdose death specific to older adults is limited. Our objective is to identify profiles based on missed intervention points (touchpoints) to inform prevention of future older adult unintentional overdose deaths. METHODS: We used latent class analysis methods to identify profiles of decedents aged 55 + years in the Illinois Statewide Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System. This system collects data on 92.6% of all unintentional overdose deaths in Illinois

Occupational mortality from gastric and duodenal ulcer.

The pronounced geographical and temporal variations in gastric and duodenal ulcer suggest that important environmental factors must play a part in their aetiology. To determine the nature of possible factors, the Registrar General's decennial supplement and the vital statistics special reports of the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare on occupational mortality were analysed for occupation-specific mortality from peptic ulcer. The data disclose a high mortality from both types of ulcer among manual workers and a low mortality among sedentary occupations. This general pat

Explanation of social inequalities in hyperactivity/inattention in children with prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Hyperactivity and inattention are major effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Although predominantly women from the high social class consume alcohol during pregnancy, children from the low social class are particularly affected by the adverse effects of PAE. This study aimed to test the hypothesis of a social gradient in hyperactivity/inattention in children with PAE. METHODS: Children with PAE (N=996) enrolled in the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS) were studied. KiGGS was designed and conducted by Robert Koch Institute (R

Birth weight and cognitive function at age 11 years: the Scottish Mental Survey 1932.

AIMS: To examine the relation between birth weight and cognitive function at age 11 years, and to examine whether this relation is independent of social class. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study based on birth records from 1921 and cognitive function measured while at school at age 11 in 1932. Subjects were 985 live singletons born in the Edinburgh Royal Maternity and Simpson Memorial Hospital in 1921. Moray House Test scores from the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 were traced on 449 of these children. RESULTS: Mean score on Moray House Test increased from 30.6 at a birth weight of <2500 g to

Addressing Bias in Acute Postoperative Pain Management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review evaluates disparities in acute postoperative pain management with regard to gender, race, socioeconomic status, age, and language. Strategies for addressing bias are also discussed. RECENT FINDINGS: Inequities in acute postoperative pain management may lead to longer hospital stays and adverse health outcomes. Recent literature suggests that there are disparities in acute pain management related to patient gender, race, and age. Interventions to address these disparities are reviewed but require further investigation. Recent literature highlights inequities in p

Mediterranean diet is linked to less objective disability in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The multiple sclerosis (MS) community is highly interested in diet as a potential protective factor against disability, but empirical evidence remains limited. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate associations between patient-reported Mediterranean diet alignment and objective disability in a real-world MS cohort. METHODS: Data were analyzed from persons with MS, aged 18-65, who completed the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), MS Functional Composite (MSFC; primary disability metric), and patient-reported outcomes (PROs; disability, gait disturbance, fatigue, anxiety, and depression)

Race, class, caste, disability, sterilisation and hysterectomy.

This interdisciplinary historical paper focuses on the past and current state of diverse forms of surgical hysterectomy as a global phenomenon relating to population control and sterilisation. It is a paper grounded in historical inquiry but is unconventional relative to the norms of historical scholarship both in its wide geographical scope informed by the methodologies of global and intercultural history, in its critique of current clinical practices informed by recent feminist, race, biopolitical and disability studies, and by its engagement with scholarship in health sociology and medical

Persistent Poverty and Cancer Mortality Rates: An Analysis of County-Level Poverty Designations.

BACKGROUND: Cancer mortality is higher in counties with high levels of (current) poverty, but less is known about associations with persistent poverty. Persistent poverty counties (with ≥20% of residents in poverty since 1980) face social, structural, and behavioral challenges that may make their residents more vulnerable to cancer. METHODS: We calculated 2007 to 2011 county-level, age-adjusted, and overall and type-specific cancer mortality rates (deaths/100,000 people/year) by persistent poverty classifications, which we contrasted with mortality in counties experiencing current poverty (≥2

Relationships between socio-economic status and lottery gambling across lottery types: neighborhood-level evidence from a large city.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lottery gambling participation tends to be higher among lower socio-economic status (SES) individuals, but it is unclear how this relationship differs as a function of lottery type. We estimated how the relationship between SES and lottery gambling rates varies across different types of lottery gambling: fixed-prize, progressive-prize (jackpot) and instant-win (scratch card) lottery tickets in a large Canadian city. DESIGN: Neighborhood-level lottery purchase data obtained from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission were analysed in conjunction with demographic data. M

Inequality in mortality in pre-industrial southern Europe during an epidemic episode: socio-economic determinants (eighteenth - nineteenth centuries Spain).

The objective of this study is to gain more comprehensive knowledge about social inequality in mortality in pre-industrial periods. With this aim, we have reconstructed the life courses of the inhabitants of the town of Vera in south-east Spain for the period 1797-1812 in order to estimate the influence of socio-economic status on ordinary and extraordinary mortality, given that, during this period, the town suffered from several epidemic outbreaks of yellow fever. As a result of these outbreaks, around a quarter of the town's population died. The results obtained indicate social inequality in

Strongyloidiasis: A Disease of Socioeconomic Disadvantage.

Strongyloidiasis is a disease caused by soil transmitted helminths of the Strongyloides genus. Currently, it is predominately described as a neglected tropical disease. However, this description is misleading as it focuses on the geographical location of the disease and not the primary consideration, which is the socioeconomic conditions and poor infrastructure found within endemic regions. This classification may result in misdiagnosis and mistreatment by physicians, but more importantly, it influences how the disease is fundamentally viewed. Strongyloidiasis must be first and foremost consid

Distinctions between separation anxiety and social anxiety in children and adolescents.

Separation anxiety and social phobia are intertwined to a considerable degree, and high comorbidity rates have been reported. The present study used latent class analysis (LCA) to investigate if classes of children and adolescents with-simultaneously-high rates of separation anxiety and low rates of social anxiety symptoms, or vice versa, could be identified. Eight- to 18-year-olds from a large general population (n=1000) and referred sample (n=735) were assessed with the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). With LCA, a separate class of referred 8-11-year-old children with high

Frontal brain delta-beta correlation, salivary cortisol, and social anxiety in children.

BACKGROUND: Correlated activity of slow-wave (e.g. delta) and fast-wave (e.g. beta) frontal brain oscillations is thought to be an electrophysiological correlate of individual differences in neuroendocrine activity and anxiety in adult samples. We know, however, relatively little about the physiological and functional correlates of delta-beta coupling in children. METHOD: We examined whether longitudinal patterns of children's basal salivary cortisol and social anxiety across two visits separated by 1 year were associated with frontal brain delta-beta correlation in children (Mage  = 7.59 yea

Profiles of substance use disorders in patients of therapeutic communities: link to social, medical and psychiatric characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic community (TC) clients frequently display a pattern of multiple substance use disorders (SUDs) which is associated with poorer treatment outcomes. This study aimed to characterize multiple SUD profiles in patients enrolled in TCs, and examine the association of these profiles with social, medical and psychiatric outcomes. METHODS: Observational study. We acquired substance use diagnoses and sociodemographic, medical and psychiatric comorbidity data for 4102 patients who had been admitted to six public TCs in Andalusia (Spain) from 2004 to 2012. Windows of reflection: conceptualizing dyslexia using the social model of disability.

The aim of this study is to develop perceptual knowledge of dyslexia from adults diagnosed with this condition. Historically, the dominant conceptual frameworks used to study dyslexia stem from psychological or educational practice. These disciplines predominantly draw on professional neuro-biological or educational knowledge that can be broadly summarized within a medical or educational model approach. Both the medical and educational models view dyslexia as resulting from a neurological and learning dysfunction. As such, only a small amount of research has attempted to locate dyslexia within

Persistent Food Insecurity and Material Hardships: A Latent Class Analysis of Experiences among Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants in Urban Colombia.

The causes and conditions of displacement often increase the vulnerability of migrant and refugee populations to food insecurity, alongside other material hardships. We aimed to examine the multidimensional aspects and patterns of food insecurity and other material hardships in a cross-sectional sample of 6221 Venezuelan refugees and migrants in urban Colombia using a latent class analysis. Using multinomial and logistic regression models, we investigated the demographic and migratory experiences associated with identified classes and how class membership is associated with multiple health out

Social Workers' Perceptions of Older Adults' Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction in Türkiye: An Intersectional Analysis.

This qualitative study examines older adults' alcohol and other drug addiction and service effectiveness from the perspectives of 30 social workers grounded in intersectionality. Findings indicate that while loneliness and social environment contribute to addiction, common outcomes include bio-psycho-social, economic, and familial impacts. Intersectional factors, including gender, class, education, marital status, parenthood, social capital, and criminal involvement, differentiate these experiences. Women experience greater stigma and reduced access to services, while class and education influ
