Personalized and typical concurrent risk of limitations in social activity and mobility in older persons with multiple chronic conditions and polypharmacy.

PURPOSE: We define personalized concurrent risk (PCR) as the subject-specific probability of an index outcome within a defined interval of time, while currently at risk for a separate outcome, where the outcomes are not mutually exclusive and can be jointly modeled with a shared random intercept. We further define typical concurrent risk as the risk obtained by setting the random intercept to null. METHODS: Drawing data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (cohorts 2008-2013), we jointly model limitations in social activity and mobility over two years among older community-dwelling perso

Conditioned odor aversion induces social anxiety towards females in wild-type and TrpC2 knockout male mice.

Female-emitted pheromonal inputs possess an intrinsic rewarding value for conspecific males, promoting approach and investigation of the potential mating partner. In mice these inputs are detected mainly by the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and the main olfactory epithelium (MOE). We investigated the role of VNO-mediated inputs in experience-dependent plasticity of reproductive responses. We applied a sex-specific conditioned odor aversion (COA) paradigm on adult, wild-type (WT) male mice and on male mice impaired in VNO-mediated signal transduction (TrpC2-/- ). We found that WT males, which underwe

Changes in Work Arrangements, Psychosocial Working Conditions, and Worker Well-Being Between 2018 and 2022: Evidence From the General Social Survey.

BACKGROUND: We used national-level data to compare worker demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, work arrangements, psychosocial working conditions, safety and health, job security, wages and benefits, and worker health and well-being before the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2018, and in the late stage of the pandemic, in 2022. Understanding these changes helps inform some of the potential ways these factors may shape the future of work. METHODS: We analyzed self-reported and publicly available data from the 2018 and 2022 waves of the General Social Survey (GSS)-Quality of Worklife (QWL) modu

Social support across eating disorder diagnostic groups: Results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III).

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have suggested the positive influence of social support on the treatment and recovery of eating disorders (EDs). Yet, more research is needed on how objective and subjective social support differ between ED diagnostic groups using nationally representative data. Therefore, the current secondary data analysis examined associations between EDs and objective and subjective social support using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III) study. METHODS: Participants completed measures of lifetime and past year diagn

Internal desynchrony of the hepatic circadian system with dissociated systemic rhythms in middle-aged mice under social jet lag-like conditions.

Social jet lag (SJL) leads to a misalignment between the circadian clock and social time. In this study, we investigated the effects of weekly shifts in light-dark (LD) conditions: two days per week with 6-h delayed LD cycles (simulating Saturday and Sunday). Core body temperature rhythms rapidly entrained to the delayed LD cycles on weekends, and these delayed rhythms persisted even after the LD cycle was advanced on Monday. In contrast, plasma corticosterone rhythms on Mondays did not show marked delays. In the livers of SJL mice on Monday, the expression rhythms of Per1, Per2, and Hsp70 wer

Spatial distribution of SARS-CoV-2 incidence, social inequality, housing conditions, and density in South-Eastern France: keys for future epidemics.

INTRODUCTION: Early in 2021, the SARS-CoV-2 incidence rate was higher in the East than in the West of the Alpes-Maritimes district in France. What was the impact of social deprivation, household overcrowding and population density per km2 on this difference in incidence rate? METHODS: Cases were defined as persons with a first SARS-CoV-2 positive test detected between 04/01/2021 and 14/02/2021. We studied the « French Deprivation index » (FDep), rate of overcrowded households and population density/km2. These indicators were compared between East and West and a Standard Incidence Ratio (SIR)

The relationship between cannabis use disorders and social anxiety disorder in the National Epidemiological Study of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC).

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use disorders (CUD) are highly comorbid with social anxiety disorder (SAD), and SAD may be a risk factor for cannabis dependence. This study explored these relationships in several ways. First, we examined whether SAD was more likely to be related to cannabis dependence than abuse. Second, we examined the temporal relations between CUD and SAD. Third, we examined whether SAD was related to faster transition from age of first cannabis use to CUD onset relative to other anxiety disorders. Fourth, we tested whether having both disorders was associated with greater impairment

Social-Single Prolonged Stress affects contextual fear conditioning in male and female Wistar rats: Molecular insights in the amygdala.

Stress exposure can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in male and female rats. Social-Single Prolonged Stress (SPS) protocol has been considered a potential PTSD model. This study aimed to pharmacologically validate the Social-SPS as a PTSD model in male and female rats. Male and female Wistar rats (60-day-old) were exposed to Social-SPS protocol and treated with fluoxetine (10 mg/Kg) or saline solution intraperitoneally 24 h before euthanasia. Two cohorts of animals were used; for cohort 1, male and female rats were still undisturbed until day 7 post-Social-SPS exposure, underwent

Corticosterone after early adolescent stress prevents social avoidance, aversive behavior, and morphine-conditioned place preference in adulthood.

RATIONALE: Stress during childhood or adolescence increases vulnerability to psychiatric disorders in adults. In adult rodents, the delayed effects of stress can increase anxiety-like behavior. These effects, however, can be prevented with post-stress administration of corticosterone (CORT). The effectiveness of CORT in preventing adolescent stress-induced emotional behavior alterations in adulthood has yet to be investigated. OBJECTIVES: Here, we investigated the interactions between early adolescent stress and exogenous corticosterone on adult social, aversive, and drug-seeking behavior in

Social support and subjective assessment of psychophysical condition, health, and satisfaction with quality of life among women after pregnancy loss.

BACKGROUND: The task of modern medicine is not just to heal, but also to improve the patient's well-being and achieve non-medical goals in the therapy process that enable effective physical, mental and social functioning of the patient. Social support in difficult situations mobilizes an individual's strength and resources to cope with problems. Research on social support and women's condition after pregnancy loss reflects a holistic approach to the patient and is important from the perspective of increasing the level of hospital care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to assess the impact

Living alone, social cohesion, and quality of life among older adults in rural and urban China: a conditional process analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To test the independent and combined impact of social cohesion and geographic locale (urban/rural) on quality of life (QoL) for older adults in China. Using conditional process analysis, we tested three hypotheses: (1) QoL will be lower for persons living alone than those who live with family; (2) social cohesion will mediate the association of living arrangement and QoL; and (3) geographic locale will moderate direct and indirect pathways in the mediation model. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data from WHO Study on Global Aging and Adult Health (SAGE) (China, Wave 1, 2007-2010). SETTIN

Acquisition of CS-US contingencies during Pavlovian fear conditioning and extinction in social anxiety disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Fear-based disorders, like social anxiety disorder (SAD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), are characterized by an exaggerated fear response and avoidance to trigger cues, suggesting a transdiagnostic mechanism of psychopathology. Current theories suggest that abnormalities in conditioned fear is a primary contributor to the pathophysiology of these disorders. The primary goal of this study was to compare acquisition of conditioned stimulus (CS) and aversive unconditioned stimulus (US) contingencies during fear learning and extinction in individuals with SAD and PTSD. A social exchange perspective on supervisors' Dark Triad and subordinates' counterproductive work behaviors: psychological contract fulfillment as a boundary condition.

This study aims to examine the effects of supervisors' Dark Triad on subordinates' counterproductive work behaviors, differentiating between counterproductive work behaviors toward the organization and those toward individuals. Drawing from the social exchange perspective, psychological contract fulfillment is introduced as a boundary condition to mitigate these adverse effects. Data collected from China's banking sector largely supports the proposed theoretical framework and hypotheses. The findings revealed that all three dimensions of supervisors' Dark Triad-narcissism, psychopathy, and Mac

Creating cohesive communities: using Conditional-Collective-Community-Based Incentives to change social norms on polio immunization in Pakistan.

Immunization remains a critical public health strategy, particularly in countries like Pakistan where vaccine-preventable diseases are prevalent despite global efforts to eradicate poliomyelitis. This study investigates the role of community engagement (CE) and conditional incentives in increasing polio vaccine uptake in High-Risk Union Councils (HRUCs) of Pakistan. Utilizing an exploratory qualitative research design, the study was conducted to assess the impact of an intervention which involved participatory CE, including the formation of Community Health Committees (CHCs) that conducted com
