Sociocultural factors associated with persistent prescription opioid use (PPOU) among Puerto Rican adults in Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of opioid-overdose deaths have been witnessed among Hispanics and other underserved populations in Massachusetts. Puerto Rican adults (PRs) have a disproportionately higher prevalence of chronic diseases than non-Hispanic White adults-conditions linked to increased prescription opioid use and misuse. Stress indicators, including low acculturation, low social support, and perceived discrimination, have been recognized as correlates of chronic diseases. However, little research has been undertaken on how these socio-cultural factors relate to persistent prescriptio

[Social determinants and epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases].

Recent approaches to studies of social determinants and social epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases are reviewed. This approach originating in some industrialized countries has so far been neglected in Croatia in spite of previous experiences and existence of sociomedical tradition. The possible explanations are considered. Obvious health problems related to the standard of living, poverty, high unemployment, work insecurity, unjustified inequality of income, and other forms of discrimination in health are not tackled. The social determinants important for health are defined and at least fi

Effects of everyday discrimination on sexual minority people's experiences of health care stereotype threat.

Sexual minority people report higher rates of discrimination than heterosexuals, and this discrimination may interfere with people's experiences of healthcare services. Drawing from the Generations dataset, a national probability dataset of 1244 sexual minority people, we explore how experiences of discrimination across contexts are associated with expectations of discrimination within health care via health care stereotype threat (HCST) and attribution of discrimination, and whether these patterns vary across cisgender sexual minority subgroups. Results suggest everyday discrimination is posi

Nationally representative surveys of experiences of discrimination and positive treatment in people with mental health problems in Australia: Changes over 10 years.

Reducing stigma and discrimination has been a priority in many national mental health policies for decades. The aim of this study was to explore population-level changes in experiences of discrimination and positive treatment between 2014 and 2024. Large nationally representative surveys of Australian adults were conducted in 2014 and 2024. For each, those who reported a mental health problem or scored high on a screening questionnaire (n = 1381 in 2014, n = 2613 in 2024) were asked about experiences of discrimination and positive treatment in multiple settings. Regression analyses were used t

Implementing trachoma control programmes in marginalised populations in Tanzania: A qualitative study exploring the experiences and perspectives of key stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Despite aspects of the SAFE strategy for reducing trachoma in Tanzania have been somewhat successful, the disease still persists in marginalised communities even with repeated trachoma control interventions. This study aims to understand the facilitators and barriers associated with implementing trachoma control programmes in these communities, from the perspective of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). METHODS: Participants were the representatives of NGOs who had knowledge and experience in the implementation of trachoma control programmes. Data was collected using in-depth,

The antecedents and consequences of racial/ethnic discrimination during adolescence: does the source of discrimination matter?

In the current study, we examined the precursors and consequences of discrimination for 876 Latino, African American, and Asian American adolescents (Mage = 16.9 years, SD = 0.43). The race/ethnic characteristics of schools and neighborhoods influenced adolescents' perceptions of the race/ethnic climates of these contexts. In turn, adolescents who viewed climates more negatively were more likely to perceive discriminatory treatment by school personnel, peers, and societal institutions. Discrimination from these 3 sources exerted differential influence on developmental outcomes: Greater discrim

Perceived sex discrimination amplifies the effect of antagonism on cigarette smoking.

INTRODUCTION: Compared to men, the decline in smoking during the past few decades has been slower for women, and smoking-related morbidity and mortality has increased substantially. Identifying sex-specific risk factors will inform more targeted intervention/prevention efforts. The purpose of this research is to examine the interactive effect of psychological (trait antagonism) and social (perceived sex discrimination) factors on current cigarette smoking and whether these effects differ by sex. METHODS: Participants in the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span stud

Perceived workplace discrimination and recovery of people with mental illness: The mediating roles of self-stigma, organizational justice, and psychological capital.

This study aims to examine the impact of perceived workplace discrimination (PWD) on the recovery of people with mental illness (PMI). Grounded in social cognitive theory, it was hypothesized that PWD is associated with poorer clinical, functional, and personal recovery through the underlying mechanisms of self-stigma, organizational justice, and psychological capital (PsyCap). A total of 265 employed PMI in Hong Kong, diagnosed with anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or other psychotic disorders, completed a structured questionnaire assessing PWD, self-stigma, organizationa

Social anxiety is associated with greater autonomic and visuocortical generalization of conditioned aversive responses to faces.

Aversive generalization learning is an adaptive trait that is necessary for survival in a dynamic environment. However, this process is exaggerated in persons with anxiety disorders, leading to overgeneralization of learned threat associations, hyperreactive fight-or-flight responses, and persistent avoidance. Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibit impaired conditioned threat discrimination particularly with respect to social stimuli, such as faces. The present study examined the relationship between social anxiety and generalization of visuocortical and pupil dilation responses t

Race, race-based discrimination, and health outcomes among African Americans.

Persistent and vexing health disadvantages accrue to African Americans despite decades of work to erase the effects of race discrimination in this country. Participating in these efforts, psychologists and other social scientists have hypothesized that African Americans' continuing experiences with racism and discrimination may lie at the root of the many well-documented race-based physical health disparities that affect this population. With newly emerging methodologies in both measurement of contextual factors and functional neuroscience, an opportunity now exists to cleave together a compre

Trajectories and mental health-related predictors of perceived discrimination and stigma among homeless adults with mental illness.

Stigma and discrimination toward individuals experiencing homelessness and mental disorders remain pervasive across societies. However, there are few longitudinal studies of stigma and discrimination among homeless adults with mental illness. This study aimed to identify the two-year group trajectories of stigma and discrimination and examine the predictive role of mental health characteristics among 414 homeless adults with mental illness participating in the extended follow-up phase of the Toronto At Home/Chez Soi (AH/CS) randomized trial site. Emotional Difficulties and Experiences of Stigma among Persons with Lymphatic Filariasis in Plateau State, Nigeria.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a chronic and often disfiguring condition that predominantly affects the rural poor and leads to social exclusion, stigma, and discrimination. Little is currently known about the emotional difficulties and stigma experiences among persons living with LF in Nigeria. Our study evaluated the emotional difficulties and stigma experienced by persons with LF in Plateau State, Nigeria. We utilized a combination of qualitative data instruments comprising focus group discussions, McGill's Illness Narrative Interviews, and key informant interviews. We transcribed and analyze

Relational diversity and neighbourhood cohesion. Unpacking variety, balance and in-group size.

Ethnic diversity is typically measured by the well-known Hirschman-Herfindahl Index. This paper discusses the merits of an alternative approach, which is in our view better suited to tease out why and how ethnic diversity matters. The approach consists of two elements. First, all existing diversity indices are non-relational. From the viewpoint of theoretical accounts that attribute negative diversity effects to in-group favoritism and out-group threat, it should however matter whether, given a certain level of overall diversity, an individual belongs to a minority group or to the dominant maj

On the Relationship Between Online Heterosexist Discrimination and Mental Health and Substance Use Among LGBTQ+ Young Adults.

LGBTQ+ individuals experience disproportionately higher rates of mental health and substance use difficulties. Discrimination is a significant factor in explaining these disparities. Meyer's (2003) minority stress theory (MST) indicates that proximal group-specific processes mediate the relationship between discrimination and health outcomes, with the effects moderated by other social factors. However, online discrimination has been understudied among LGBTQ+  people. Focusing on LGBTQ+  young adults experiencing online heterosexist discrimination (OHD), the current study aimed to investigate t

Trauma, discrimination, and intimate partner violence: intergenerational pathways in racially minoritized communities.

This study examined whether childhood violence exposure contributes to adult intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration across racial groups and whether adolescent racial discrimination and parental racial socialization shape IPV risk among Black men. Integrating social learning and intersectionality theories within an eco-developmental framework, 253 cisgender men aged 18-35 (Black = 128, White = 125) completed measures of retrospectively reported childhood violence exposure, adolescent discrimination, parental racial socialization, and adult IPV perpetration. Everyday discrimination, emotion, and daily interactions during adolescence.

The present study examined whether everyday discrimination relates to the frequency of adolescents' positive and negative daily social interactions and whether these associations are driven by anger and positive emotion. Adolescents (N = 334) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study, in which they completed surveys regarding everyday discrimination, anger, and positive emotion, as well as 15 daily reports of conflict and getting along with friends and family. Higher everyday discrimination was related to more daily conflicts and fewer experiences of getting along with other people. Long

Patterns of social determinants of health associated with drug use among women living with HIV in Canada: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Identifying typologies of social determinants of health (SDoH) vulnerability influencing drug use practices among women living with HIV (WLWH) can help to address associated harms. This research aimed to explore the association of SDoH clusters with drug use among WLWH. DESIGN: Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify the distinct clusters of SDoH. Inverse probability weighting (IPW) was employed to account for confounding and potential selection bias. Associations were analyzed using generalized linear model with log link and Poisson distribution, and then weight

High-risk polysubstance use among LGBTQ+ people who use drugs in the United States: An application of syndemic theory.

BACKGROUND: Compared to heterosexual and cisgender people, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) people are more likely to develop problems with high-risk polysubstance use. According to syndemic theory, this disparity in high-risk polysubstance use is produced by the LGBTQ+ community's increased vulnerability to experiencing psychosocial (e.g., discrimination, unwanted sex) and structural (e.g., food insecurity, homelessness) conditions, greater likelihood of coping with concurrent health problems (e.g., human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]),

Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression for Social Epidemiologic Research.

BACKGROUND: Little attention has been devoted to framing multiple continuous social variables as a "mixture" for social epidemiologic analysis. We propose using the Bayesian kernel machine regression analytic framework that yields univariate, bivariate, and overall exposure mixture effects. METHODS: Using data from the 2023 Survey of Racism and Public Health, we conducted a Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis to study several individual, social, and structural factors as an exposure mixture and their relationships with psychological distress among individuals with at least one police
