Adolescents' Long-Term Identity Tension After Politicized Cyber Shaming: Peer Support and Behavioural Visibility Management As Joint Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Politicized cyber shaming recodes adolescents' cultural interests as evidence of political loyalty or moral belonging. This study examines how such shaming is associated with longer-term identity tension in adolescence, focusing on public expression, peer belonging, and self-evaluation after politicized online controversy. METHODS: Data were collected in China in 2023 using an event-anchored retrospective mixed-methods design. The study combines front-end data from Baidu Tieba, a Chinese topic-based online forum, during the 2012 Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands dispute and the 2016 Termin

Actions Speak Louder than Words: A Qualitative Study of US Clinical Students' Allyship Experiences and Their Relation to Professional Identity.

Purpose: Enabling undergraduate medical trainees to develop professional identities consistent with their consciousness of inequities in healthcare and their obligation to provide just healthcare is a pressing challenge. Except as a duty not to discriminate, the positive obligations of a physician's commitment to social justice in the clinic can be unclear, including for educators seeking to empower learners to incorporate such commitments into their developing identities. This study explored the pedagogical value of allyship-to be in supportive association with a marginalized or mistreated gr

Predictors of Biracial adolescent racial self-categorization when confronted with monoracist demographic forms.

The current study draws from literature on Multiracial ethnic-racial identity development processes and utilizes logistic regression models to identify what factors inform ethnic-racial self-categorization choices when confronted with a monoracial paradigm of race in a sample of Biracial high school students. Separate logistic regression models analyzed how family ethnic-racial socialization, phenotype, friend groups, and experiences with discrimination are associated with the racial category for Biracial White, Asian, Black, Native American, and Latinx youth, respectively, when asked to choos

A qualitative examination of familial racial-ethnic socialization experiences among multiracial American emerging adults.

This qualitative interview study investigated the types of parental racial-ethnic socialization messages received by Multiracial American youth over the course of their development. The Multiracial population in America is the largest demographic group among individuals under the age of 18 (Saulny, 2011), but there is a dearth of research about the development of this rapidly growing population. Multiracial youth are members of multiple racial-ethnic groups. Thus, racial-ethnic socialization is particularly complex for Multiracial families because parents typically have different racial backgr

High outgroup entitativity can inhibit intergroup retribution.

Understanding the psychological processes that are involved in the perpetuation and escalation of intergroup conflict remains an important goal for intergroup relations research. In the present research, we examined perceived outgroup entitativity as a potential determinant of intergroup hostility. In intergroup conflict situations, high-entitative outgroups are perceived as particularly deserving of retribution; however, high-entitative outgroups are also perceived as efficacious and capable of retaliating successfully, suggesting that people may inhibit hostility against high-entitative (vs.

Race-based shifting standards and racial discrimination.

Members of stereotyped groups tend to be judged relative to group-specific standards such that subjective descriptions (smart, aggressive, tall) mean something different when they are applied to members of different groups. A "shifting standards" effect is present when judgments of group members on objective rating scales show stronger evidence of assimilation to stereotypes than the same judgments on subjective scales. This research asks whether the tendency to shift standards when judging the academic competence of Black and White students is related to measures of racial prejudice and to ra

How does servant leadership affect unethical pro-organizational behaviors: examining a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Servant leadership in the healthcare sector can lead to negative outcomes in certain contexts, such as encouraging unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) for the benefit of the organization. The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of identification with leader and the moderating role of positive reciprocity belief in the relationship between servant leadership and UPB, drawing on social exchange and social identity theory. In this context, the aim is to highlight not only the generally accepted positive outcomes of servant leadership in literature but also i

A meta-analysis on the relationship between cultural identity and substance use among indigenous youth.

BACKGROUND: The association between cultural identity and substance use varies across studies, highlighting the need to quantify this relationship and identify sources of variability. This meta-analysis quantified the relationship between cultural identity and substance use among North American Indigenous youth, tested potential moderators, and described measurement approaches and tribal nation representation. METHOD: A systematic literature search identified 18 studies reporting a quantifiable association between cultural identity and substance use with samples of at least 75% Indigenous you

"Pero like, you don't speak Spanish?" exploring the role of language fluency on Latine intragroup identity denial, likability, and befriending.

OBJECTIVE: Anecdotal narratives and recent qualitative studies demonstrate that in Latine communities, language proficiency can be a form of gatekeeping (i.e., determining the legitimacy of people's claims to a particular status by unilaterally imposing criteria for acceptance) Latinidad. Latine individuals who are not fluent in Spanish frequently report having their Hispanic/Latine identity questioned and denied. Across two experiments, we investigated whether Latine individuals perceive non-Spanish-speaking Latine individuals as identifying less with their Latine identity. METHOD: Across tw

When Others Are Present: How Gender and Group Identification Shape Risk-Taking in Novice Gamblers?

Emerging adults are at elevated risk for gambling-related harm, even at low-level of engagement. This study examines how gender, group identification, and social presence interact to affect gambling intensity in novice gamblers. Participants included 48 males (Mage = 18.69, SD = 1.24) and 61 females (Mage = 18.46, SD = 0.74), with ages ranging from 17 to 23 years, were screened using the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale-Chinese Version. Group identification was manipulated using the Cyberball paradigm, and social presence was varied through either a virtual audience (videoconference) or simulated

Evidence for Environmental Risk Factors and Cumulative Stress Linking Racial/Ethnic Identity and Psychotic-Like Experiences in ABCD Study Data.

OBJECTIVE: Previous work has found increased endorsement of psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) among marginalized racial and ethnic groups. According to social determinants frameworks, marginalized groups are at increased risk for exposure to socioenvironmental risk factors, including systemic factors (eg, poverty and poor housing conditions) and social stressors (eg, discrimination). We examine the extent to which environmental risk factors and stress account for associations between racial/ethnic groups with PLEs. METHOD: Analyses included 11,876 young adolescents 9 to 10 years of age from t

Social representations of the elderly about HIV/AIDS.

OBJECTIVE: to understand the representational content about HIV/AIDS among seropositive elderly people. METHOD: a qualitative study carried out from April to May 2017, in the city of Recife/PE, with 48 seropositive elderly people, through a semi-structured interview. The Social Representations Theory was used as theoretical framework and the method of lexical analysis through IRAMUTEQ software. RESULTS: it was observed that the social representation of HIV is structured around the proximity of death and that it is a disease of restricted groups, leading to feelings of sadness. Efficacy of personalized normative feedback as a brief intervention for college student gambling: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Social influences on gambling among adolescents and adults have been well documented and may be particularly evident among college students, who have higher rates of problem and pathological gambling relative to the general population. Personalized normative feedback (PNF) is a brief intervention designed to correct misperceptions regarding the prevalence of problematic behavior by showing individuals engaging in such behaviors that their own behavior is atypical with respect to actual norms. The current randomized controlled trial evaluated a computer-delivered PNF intervention for

I'm like you and you're like me: social projection and self-stereotyping both help explain self-other correspondence.

Social projection and self-stereotyping are rival explanations for self-other correspondence, in which people tend to perceive a high degree of similarity between themselves and others. The present research shows that both accounts are correct-that is, that knowledge of the self and knowledge of others are mutually constraining. In Study 1, participants whose self-views were experimentally manipulated revised their judgments of an immediate ingroup. In Study 2, an analogous manipulation of ingroup traits altered participants' self-views. In Study 3, participants who were ascribed a trait readi

The role of social schema in the experience of auditory hallucinations: a systematic review and a proposal for the inclusion of social schema in a cognitive behavioural model of voice hearing.

UNLABELLED: The interpersonal nature of the voice-hearing experience has been highlighted in recent studies investigating whether social processes (or 'schemas') that guide interpersonal interactions also govern the relationship between voice hearer and voice. A systematic literature review of relevant studies was undertaken, including those that investigated how social processes interact with appraisals of voices, as well as affective and behavioural responding to voices. The review included 13 studies published between 2000 and 2010. Two well-replicated findings emerged from the review. Firs

Organized after-school activities and Asian American high school students' Asian American identity and Asian American racial identity ideological values.

The present study qualitatively examined how Asian American college students thought their participation in organized after-school activities during high school was related to their Asian American identity and Asian American racial identity ideological values. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 25 Asian American-identifying undergraduate students (80% female, 96% U.S.-born) enrolled in a 4-year, public university in Southern California. Thematic analysis, employing both inductive and deductive approaches, identified two key mechanisms through which Asian American colleg

Social networks and adult social identities: profiles and correlates of support and rejection.

The growth of interest in social networks has underscored the need for integrative analyses of network dimensions. A three-pronged strategy to achieve this objective was pursued in a study of 261 married women nurses. First, network variables related to important adult social identities were differentiated. Factor analyses revealed four network interaction factors: work support, work rejection, general support, and general rejection. An additional factor analysis differentiated work associates from nonwork network members. Second, cluster analysis of these factor scores identified five differe

The Paradox of Workforce Self-Sufficiency: Policy Narratives, Professional Identity and Internationally Educated Nurses in the United Kingdom.

The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan positions international recruitment as essential for present stability while projecting a future of reduced structural dependence on internationally educated nurses. This tension, conceptualised as the paradox of self-sufficiency, forms the focus of this study. Drawing on a critical qualitative evidence synthesis, eight UK policy documents were analysed using Bacchi's 'What's the Problem Represented to Be?' (WPR) framework alongside thematic synthesis of 17 qualitative studies, sensitised by Social Identity Theory and Ontological Security. Policy analysis revea

Mental contrasting promotes effective self-regulation for the benefits of groups.

Self-regulation is essential for maintaining harmonious social connections and sustaining groups, yet little research has examined how individuals regulate their actions for the benefits of groups and which self-regulatory strategies promote effective self-regulation (active engagement and disengagement) in group contexts. In three experiments, focusing on identity groups (family and friends in Study 1) and two distinct functional groups (workplace teams in Study 2; sports teams in Study 3), we investigated whether mental contrasting of a desired future with the obstacle of reality, compared t

Impact of liminality and rituals on professional identity formation in physician training.

PURPOSE: The transition from medical student to practicing physician affects the complex processes of professional identity formation and professionalism, which have a lasting effect on the physician's career development. This study explored two different transitional processes of medical students in Taiwan, the associated rituals during this transitional period (the 'liminal phase') and their effect on the formation of professional identity. METHOD: Using snowball sampling, we recruited 13 medical students from two training systems: six from the traditional postgraduate year programme and se
