The predictive value of the early maladaptive schemas in social situations in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) show an impairment in the recognition and expression of emotions, as well as an increased sensitivity to being socially excluded, and rigid maladaptive schemas. The Cyberball paradigm is a virtual ball-toss game that can simulate social exclusion and inclusion. Our aim is to evaluate how cognitive schemas can influence the perception and the evaluation of the experiences of social inclusion/exclusion. METHODS: Thirty-two AN patients and 34 healthy controls completed a psychological evaluation and were randomly assigned to exclusion or overinclus

Mixed stereotype content and attitudes toward students with special educational needs and their inclusion in regular schools in Luxembourg.

BACKGROUND: Students with special educational needs (SEN) remain one of the most socially excluded and vulnerable groups. To this extent, negative attitudes and stereotypes may impede their inclusion. Theoretical frameworks have suggested that stereotypes and attitudes elicit differential expectations and judgments, which in turn affect (social) behaviors. AIMS: In this study, we aimed to investigate the stereotypes and implicit attitudes held by a sample of Luxemburgish adults toward students with learning difficulties and challenging behavior. We also explored the adults' explicit attitudes

Unemployment in women with psychosocial disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic: Lessons from Tana River County, Kenya.

In low-income settings, the informal economy is a practical alternative to work and employment for persons with disabilities. However, the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected the informal economy. This study aimed to explore the experiences of women with psychosocial disabilities in Kenya during the pandemic. We found that the pandemic worsened their experiences of work and employment, and they did not receive any social welfare or support from the government. Our findings suggest that pandemic management must adopt inclusive and context-sensitive approaches that support persons with psychos

[Inclusive University (InUni): A cross-sectional study on the work-related inclusion experience of university employees with impairment].

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine work-related inclusion experiences of employees at a university and to explore potential influences on the inclusion experiences of employees with impairment. METHODS: In a cross-sectional online survey, 199 employees were questioned about their work-related experience of inclusion using the perceived group inclusion scale. Two linear regression models were used, firstly to analyse differences between the experience of inclusion of employees with and without impairment and secondly to investigate the relationship between potential influences and t

A country-wide health policy in Chile for deaf adults using cochlear implants: Analysis of health determinants and social impacts.

BACKGROUND: Post-lingual deafness represents a critical challenge for adults' well-being with substantial public health burdens. One treatment of choice has been cochlear implants (CI) for people with severe to profound hearing loss (HL). Since 2018, Chile has implemented a high-cost policy to cover CI treatment, the "Ley Ricarte Soto" (LRS) health policy. However, wide variability exists in the use of this device. To date, no related study has been published on policy evaluation in Chile or other Latin American countries. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the LRS policy

Diverse Recruitment for Clinical Trials Using Three Diversity-Enhancing Interventions: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Lack of diversity in clinical trials reduces the generalizability of treatment efficacy across different demographic groups, thereby diminishing the relevance, quality, and equity of research findings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of 4 recruitment strategies and their impact on clinical trial enrollment through the Trial of Sites to Increase Diversity in Clinical Trials (TOTAL) project, a collaboration between Stanford and Morehouse School of Medicine funded by the American Heart Association. METHODS: Clinical trials were randomized to 1 of 3 recruit

Implementing and evaluating culturally relevant dance opportunities for people living with dementia in historically excluded and racialised communities: a qualitative case study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Engagement with the arts is advocated to reduce stigma and to increase the social inclusion of people living with dementia since the arts powerfully support non-verbal communication, affect and the opportunity to participate in activities that are meaningful to self and others. An example is Sharing Dance Older Adults (SDOA), an innovative, community dance programme that is offered by Canada's National Ballet School (NBS) intended to support social inclusion by making dance accessible to older adults with a range of physical and cognitive abilities, including people living with dem

Social factors contributing to the development of chronic low back pain: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Research and clinical practice approaches to chronic low back pain (CLBP) have predominantly focused on biomedical and psychological aspects, often overlooking social influences. The biopsychosocial (BPS) model provides a theoretical framework for conceptualizing CLBP as the outcome of complex interactions between individuals and their environment, offering valuable insights into its progression and informing effective care strategies. This scoping review seeks to identify social factors contributing to CLBP, and to propose a classification system that offers a complementary perspe

Examining the impact of online rejection among emerging adults with borderline personality pathology: Development of a novel online group chat social rejection paradigm.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional reactivity and interpersonal sensitivity, including greater emotional and cognitive reactivity to social rejection than controls. However, existing social rejection paradigms are not relevant to the particular social contexts that are increasingly relevant for adolescents and young adults (i.e., social media and online settings). This study examined emotional, parasympathetic, and cognitive responses to a novel online group chat social interaction task among emerging adults (18-24 years old) with a range of BPD pathology. Can You See Us Play? Observing Inclusive Outdoor Play Behaviour Among Children With and Without Disabilities: A Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Outdoor play is essential for children's development. However, children with disabilities face barriers in outdoor play. In the Netherlands, there are limited opportunities for children with and without disabilities to play together. While previous research examined the perspectives of parents, professionals and children regarding inclusive outdoor play, little is known about actual outdoor play behaviour. This exploratory study uses observational research to investigate how children with and without disabilities engage in outdoor play together. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods ap

α-Synuclein aggregation decreases cortico-amygdala connectivity and impairs social behavior in mice.

Abnormal accumulation of insoluble α-synuclein (α-Syn) inclusions in neurons, neurites, and glial cells is the defining neuropathology of synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy. Accumulation of α-Syn inclusions in the amygdala has been well-documented in post-mortem studies of PD and DLB brains, as well as preclinical animal models of these conditions. Though α-Syn pathology is closely associated with neurodegeneration, there is a poor correlation between neuronal loss in the amygdala and the clinical features of PD a

Sport Participation for People with Disabilities: Exploring the Potential of Reverse Integration and Inclusion through Wheelchair Basketball.

Reverse integration is defined as the inclusion of able-bodied people into disability sport. For decades, there have been movements towards integrating people with a disability in mainstream society. There has been a lack of research supporting the movement of able-bodied involvement in disability sport, known as reverse integration. In this study, the real-life experiences and motivations of 11 national wheelchair basketball players (four able-bodied and seven with a disability) were explored, identifying the potential of reverse integration and what influenced the players involvement. Psychological and pharmacological treatments of social phobia: a meta-analysis.

A meta-analysis of psychological and pharmacological treatments for social phobia was conducted to evaluate whether the various treatments differ in their efficacy for treating social phobia, whether they are more effective than wait-list and placebo controls, whether rates of attrition differ, and whether treatment gains are maintained at follow-up. A total of 108 treatment-outcome trials for social phobia met inclusion/exclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. Eleven treatment conditions were compared: wait-list control, pill placebo, benzodiazepines (BDZs), selective serotonin reuptake inhi

Gender differences in social support for socially anxious individuals.

Given that social anxiety disorder is a common, chronic, debilitating disorder and socially anxious women appear to have different experiences related to social development and social support than men, it is essential that the gender differences in social anxiety and social support be understood. The present study examined perceived social support quantity and satisfaction in 23 women and 28 men seeking treatment for social anxiety disorder. Contrary to expectations, men and women did not differ on measures of social support. However, younger, unmarried women reported having smaller social sup

Assessing the impact of social cohesion on suicide-related emergency calls: a spatial modeling approach.

PURPOSE: Given the relevance of community-level approaches to suicide prevention, this study aims to examine how neighborhood social cohesion relates to spatial variation in suicide-related emergency calls and whether its inclusion enhances model performance compared to sociodemographic factors alone. METHODS: We analyzed geocoded data on suicide-related emergency calls (N = 6,271) aggregated across 552 census block groups in Valencia (Spain) from 2021 to 2023, provided by the Valencian Regional Government. Sociodemographic indicators were obtained from official municipal statistics (2020), a

Social Skills Group Training for Students with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities in Senior High School-A Qualitative Multi-Perspective Study of Social Validity.

Including students with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs) in regular classrooms has become a law-enforced common practice in many high- and middle-income countries. Still, without appropriate actions supporting the implementation of inclusive pedagogical practice, students with NDDs remain at increased risk for absenteeism, bullying and underachievement. There is limited knowledge on the feasibility of social skills group training (SSGT) in naturalistic settings. Using a qualitative approach, the objective of this study was to explore the lived experiences of (i) students diagnosed with a

Smartphone technology, social network maintenance, and social participation among Mandarin-speaking older immigrants in Canada.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The rapid global expansion of digital technologies has reshaped everyday life across generations, yet the role of smartphones in older immigrants' social well-being remains insufficiently understood. Drawing on the sociotechnical perspective that ageing and technology are co-constituted; our study examines how Mandarin-speaking older immigrants in Canada use smartphones to overcome social isolation and sustain social participation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were obtained from 102 qualitative interviews conducted across seven Canadian cities as part of the In

Public Health Policy Responses to Population Aging in Mexico: A Rights-Based and Socio-Legal Approach.

Background/Objectives: Population aging represents a major social and public health challenge in Latin America. Mexico has made significant advances in regulatory and policy frameworks. Notable progress includes accession to the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons (IACPHROP). It also includes the enactment of the Law on the Rights of Older Persons, and institutional reforms for social and cultural inclusion. This review evaluates Mexico's alignment of aging policies with IACPHROP standards using an integrated framework of social determinants, policies, and
