Phencyclidine (PCP) can induce a model psychosis in humans that mimics the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. In the social interaction test PCP induces stereotyped behaviour and social isolation in rats, and these behaviours can be inhibited by antipsychotic drugs. In order to further evaluate the predictive validity of this model of schizophrenia the anxiolytic diazepam (0.02-17.5 micromol/kg; 0.005-5.0 mg/kg), the antidepressant citalopram (0.62-19.8 micromol/kg; 0.3-4.0 mg/kg), the opioid agonist methadone (0.36-5.8 micromol/kg; 0.13-2.0 mg/kg) and the opioid antagonist nalox

Social isolation is known to cause a variety of behavioural abnormalities in many different species. Here we perform a detailed behavioural analysis of how chronic social deprivation alters behaviours in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, within an arena. We identify specific, quantifiable measures to capture behaviours of interest using the previously established cTrax and MATLAB BehavioralMicroarray toolkits. Socially isolated Drosophila exhibited behavioural changes in almost all measures assessed, identifying a surprisingly wide range of behavioural deficits. We observe that both male

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and social isolation are established risk factors for adverse cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and cognitive outcomes in later life, yet the pathways underlying these associations remain underexplored. This study tests the structure of a published framework linking social isolation and loneliness to health outcomes through psychological, behavioural and physiological pathways. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from 1,685 Singaporean adults over the age of 60 from the Wellbeing of the Singapore Elderly study. Path analysis was used to examine the psychological (sub

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between household food security and social isolation among US adults and differences by age. To evaluate their joint impact on health, we examined whether both experiences are independently associated with less healthy functioning across intrinsic capacity (IC) domains, and whether social isolation modifies the food security-IC relationships.
METHODS: Data were from 14,570 non-institutionalized adults ≥20 years from the 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Food security was measured using the US Household Food Security

Older adults are at increased risk of loneliness, social isolation and use of analgesics such as over-the-counter (OTC) medications and opioids. While evidence suggest that loneliness and social isolation may influence patterns of pain medication use, longitudinal studies remain limited. Data from the Health and Retirement Study (2014-2022) were analysed for 9,454 US adults aged 50+. Continuous-time multistate Markov models examined how social isolation and loneliness were associated with the likelihood of transitioning between states of medication use, non-use, and death whilst controlling fo

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation frequently experience substantial changes in physical functioning, social roles, and daily routines, which may increase vulnerability to social disconnection and psychological distress. This study applied network analysis to explore the interrelationships among social isolation, loneliness, anxiety, and depression in post-discharge rehabilitation patients.
AIMS: This study aimed to characterize two network models of social isolation, loneliness, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms among post-discharge rehabilitation

Public blockchains allow individuals to own, trade, and transfer digital cryptoassets on the internet. These cryptoassets are highly volatile and available to trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The potential financial rewards stemming from buying and selling cryptoassets create the possibility for individuals to display a maladaptive behavior, problematic cryptoasset trading, which can be considered as a type of problematic gambling. Prior research has demonstrated that behavioral addictive disorders, like gambling disorder, are associated with poor mental health. In addition, previous r

OBJECTIVE: There is a growing emphasis on the importance of social integration during adolescence. However, adolescents who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (D/HH) may face a greater risk of social isolation. This study explores the social isolation experienced by adolescents who are D/HH during their transition from primary to secondary education from the perspective of professionals. It also aims to provide recommendations for interventions to reduce this social isolation.
DESIGN: Qualitative descriptive methodology with in-depth interviews.
STUDY SAMPLE: Ten professionals who work with adolesc

Social isolation and loneliness represent critical psychosocial stressors associated with profound hormonal dysregulation and adverse behavioral outcomes. This review synthesizes current evidence on neuroendocrine mechanisms linking perceived and objective social disconnection to health consequences, emphasizing hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction, altered glucocorticoid signaling, and inflammatory pathways. Loneliness activates conserved transcriptional responses with upregulated proinflammatory gene expression and downregulated antiviral responses, mediated through sustained cort

Despite evidence linking perceived social isolation (PSI) with substance use disorders (SUDs), limited research has examined its effect on fentanyl use among people who inject drugs (PWID). Cross-sectional data of 350 PWID in Appalachian Kentucky were utilized to examine the association between PSI and lifetime fentanyl use. Study findings highlighted a significant association between PSI and lifetime fentanyl use. Additionally, PWID with higher scores on the PSI scale tend to use fentanyl less frequently, suggesting that social isolation may serve as a protective factor against fentanyl use w

Previous studies indicate differences in experiences of loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic but are constricted by limited timeframes and absence of key risk factors. This study explores temporal and inter-individual variations of loneliness in Canadians over the pandemic's first year (April 2020-2021), by identifying loneliness trajectories. It then seeks to provide information about groups overrepresented in high and persistent loneliness trajectories by examining their associations with risk factors: social isolation indicators (living alone, adherence to health measures limiting in-per

OBJECTIVES: This study estimates health utility decrements associated with social isolation and loneliness (SIL) using nationally representative longitudinal data from Australia.
METHODS: Four waves of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey were analyzed. Health utility was measured using the Short Form 6-Dimension with the Australian weighting algorithm. Social isolation was defined as living alone with infrequent social contact, and loneliness as a score ≥5 on a 1 to 7 scale. Respondents were classified as neither, socially isolated only, lonely only, or both. Individ

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity (FI) and social isolation (SI) are interconnected social determinants of health that disproportionately affect older adults. While FI and SI have been studied independently, their combined effects on malnutrition and quality of life (QoL) have not been adequately synthesized. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of combined FI and SI interventions over the past decade, identify reported facilitators and barriers, and explore technology-based approaches to inform future research.
METHODS: This study follows the Preferred Reporting Items for System

Background: According to the World Health Organization, social isolation, particularly of older adults, is a public health issue endangering the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Social isolation affects health through biological, behavioral, and psychological pathways and is associated with physical and psychological/emotional well-being, increases morbidity and mortality rates, and lowers quality of life. Purpose: This systematic review examined the relationship between social isolation and physical health, including subjective and objective dimensions, and factors that i

BACKGROUND: Social isolation (SI) and food insecurity (FI) are important social determinants of health that can negatively impact well-being in old age. While research on the association between FI and SI is limited in LMICs, the mediators of this association are largely unknown. This cross-sectional study examined whether FI is associated with SI among older adults in Ghana and whether psychological factors (i.e., depression, anxiety, and sleep problems) mediated the association.
METHODS: Our study consisted of adults aged ≥50 years in the Aging, Health, Well-being, and Health-seeking Behavi
