Social-emotional learning and adolescent mental health: Indirect effects and the moderating role of peer victimization.

This study aimed to (a) examine the direct and indirect effects of social-emotional learning (SEL)-infused instruction on secondary student mental health through social-emotional skills (SEL) and student-to-student relationships and (b) explore the moderating role of peer victimization on this relationship. Cross-sectional data were collected from a racially and ethnically diverse sample of 546 students in sixth-12th grades from the southeast region of the United States. Participants completed electronic surveys of their peer victimization experiences, relationships with students, SEL skills,

Predicting asthma prevalence across US communities by integrating social vulnerability and environmental risk with machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, disproportionately affecting racial and ethnic minority populations and low-income communities. Although both social and environmental factors are known contributors to asthma prevalence, the extent to which they interact to shape geographic disparities remains insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how these factors vary across regions with differing asthma prevalence and thereby identify patterns that may inform targeted public health responses. METHODS: We used the US Centers f

Change your attitude. The role of affective social learning in shaping individual attitudes toward their environment.

Traditional accounts of cognitive development often portray children as solitary learners, primarily engaged in epistemic discovery through observation or reasoning. However, given their deep dependence on others, children must also make sense of the norms and values that are important to their social group. This paper explores the role of affective social learning in shaping individual attitudes - understood as emotional stances toward objects, behaviors or norms - throughout development. Drawing on philosophy, social psychology and developmental science, we conceptualize attitudes as emotion

Enhancing Medicaid Social Risk Identification: Comparing Linear and Non-Linear Machine Learning Models with Expert Heuristics.

Conventional risk identification methods often fail to capture the complex, non-linear patterns of social risks, reducing the effectiveness of operationalizing Social Determinants of Health within Medicaid Managed Care Organizations. The utility of machine learning models is investigated in this paper to overcome the performance limitations of the current expert heuristic scoring systems in practice. We develop a suite of linear and non-linear machine learning models based on a real-world Medicaid dataset containing six SDOH domains to predict individuals at risk of unmet social needs. Results

Social care occupational therapy and learning disabilities: professional perspectives on communication, collaboration and making a difference.

PURPOSE: Adults with learning disabilities experience a poorer quality of life than the general population. Social care can critically support such adults and their informal carers, but limited literature exists about occupational therapy provision. This study explored the extent to which social care occupational therapists support communication and collaboration, and make a difference. METHODS: Eight social care occupational therapists were recruited through professional networks. Online interviews were undertaken using topic guides co-designed with professionals and experts by experience. R

Aberrant predictive learning along the positive schizotypy - autistic traits continuum: evidence from ambiguous social information processing.

Deficits in social information processing have been observed in both schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), though the underlying mechanisms may differ. From a predictive coding perspective, such deficits are thought to arise from an overreliance on prior expectations in SSD, whereas individuals with ASD may exhibit difficulties in forming or using such expectations. However, very few studies have investigated the behavioral markers underlying social predictive learning along the ASD-SSD continuum. Using a novel cue-outcome associative learning task, this st

Embedding Social-Emotional Learning in Elementary School-Based Speech-Language Therapy: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Many students with communication disorders have unique social-emotional needs, yet school speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are not typically trained in how to address those needs. We developed a new training (STIRS [SLP Training to Increase Resilience in Students]) to equip elementary school SLPs to embed social-emotional learning (SEL) practices within their routine speech-language sessions with K-3 students with communication disorders. The primary objective of this pilot trial was to evaluate the preliminary effects and feasibility of STIRS. METHOD: This was a single-blind, par

Use of machine learning methods to understand discussions of female genital mutilation/cutting on social media.

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) describes several procedures that involve injury to the vulva or vagina for nontherapeutic reasons. Though at least 200 million women and girls living in 30 countries have undergone FGM/C, there is a paucity of studies focused on public perception of FGM/C. We used machine learning methods to characterize discussion of FGM/C on Twitter in English from 2015 to 2020. Twitter has emerged in recent years as a source for seeking and sharing health information and misinformation. We extracted text metadata from user profiles to characterize the individuals a

Seeking Out Social Learning: Online Self-Education in Parents of Children With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Supportive, informed parenting is critical to improve outcomes of children who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Parents want to learn about their child's condition, needs, and strategies to improve family life. The internet is a valuable resource, but how parents evaluate and apply information is unknown. We conducted focus groups to understand how parents use internet resources to learn about their children with IDD. Parents described using the internet to access information from trusted sources, find examples to apply their knowledge, and seek social support. Soc

Sleep Health Education to Promote Public Health: Attitudes and Desired Learning Goals among Social Work Students.

Social workers are often front line behavioral health providers for underserved populations, many of whom experience sleep disturbances. Inadequate sleep presents a public health challenge and is associated with many adverse physical health and mental health consequences. Social workers are uniquely positioned to promote sleep health among individuals experiencing health inequities. However, sleep is rarely included as part of the curricula in social work programs in the U.S. We conducted qualitative formative research to investigate social work students' perceptions of sleep education and des

Impaired social learning predicts reduced real-life motivation in individuals with depression: A computational fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder is associated with altered social functioning and impaired learning, on both the behavioural and the neural level. These deficits are likely related, considering that successful social interactions require learning to predict other people's emotional responses. Yet, there is little research examining this relation. METHODS: Forty-three individuals with high (HD; N = 21) and low (LD; N = 22) depression scores answered questions regarding their real-life social experiences and performed a social learning task during fMRI scanning. As part of the task, subje

The Nguudu Barndimanmanha Project-Improving Social and Emotional Wellbeing in Aboriginal Youth Through Equine Assisted Learning.

Background: Recent statistics have painted a grim picture for Australia's Aboriginal youth, with reports of higher levels of almost every health indicator, including depression, sexual and emotional abuse, unemployment, and incarceration. Traditional western based therapies have proven to have limited effectiveness in engaging this group as they can often be culturally inappropriate. International studies have provided promising results using equine assisted learning, with a sound methodological basis underpinned by Indigenous ways of being and doing. In Australia Aboriginal people have strong

Abnormal brain activity in social reward learning in children with autism spectrum disorder: an fMRI study.

PURPOSE: We aimed to determine whether Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) would show neural abnormality of the social reward system using functional MRI (fMRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 27 ASDs and 12 typically developing controls (TDCs) participated in this study. The social reward task was developed, and all participants performed the task during fMRI scanning. RESULTS: ASDs and TDCs with a social reward learning effect were selected on the basis of behavior data. We found significant differences in brain activation between the ASDs and TDCs showing a social reward learning effect. Compared with

Right hemispheric dysfunction in nonverbal learning disabilities: social, academic, and adaptive functioning in adults and children.

This review addresses recent research on social and nonverbal learning disabilities. Involvement of right hemispheric dysfunction in these disabilities has been hypothesized, as studies with adults have suggested that documented right hemisphere damage may lead to deficits in social skills, prosody, spatial orientation, problem solving, and recognition of nonverbal cues. Studies of children purported to evidence nonverbal learning disabilities are reviewed and compared with the results from studies of adults with right hemisphere damage. Specific subtypes of nonverbal learning disabilities are

Learning to do well or learning to do good? Estimating the effects of schooling on civic engagement, social cohesion, and labor market outcomes in the presence of endowments.

Although some point to the large effects of schooling on civic engagement (usually measured in terms of volunteering and participation in civic organizations) and social cohesion (usually measured in terms of social networks and relationship quality), the effects of schooling on social outcomes have not been estimated with the same rigor as the effects of schooling on labor-market outcomes, such as earnings. In particular, previous research has failed to consider (i) the many potential and often unobserved confounding factors ("endowments") influencing both schooling and social outcomes, inclu

Learned phenotypes emerge during social stress modifying hippocampal orexin receptor gene expression.

Psychological distress, including anxiety or mood disorders, emanates from the onset of chronic/unpredictable stressful events. Symptoms in the form of maladaptive behaviors are learned and difficult to treat. While the origin of stress-induced disorders seems to be where learning and stress intersect, this relationship and molecular pathways involved remain largely unresolved. The hippocampus, studied for its role in learning, is divided into regions that designate the passage of neuronal signaling during memory formation, including dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, CA2, and CA1. Inputs into these hip

Altered structure and functional connectivity of the hippocampus are associated with social and mathematical difficulties in nonverbal learning disability.

The hippocampus is known to play a critical role in a variety of complex abilities, including visual-spatial reasoning, social functioning, and math. Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in visual-spatial reasoning that are accompanied by impairment in social function or mathematics, as well as motor or executive function skills. Despite the overlap between behaviors supported by the hippocampus and impairments in NVLD, the structure and function of the hippocampus in NVLD has not been studied. To address this gap in the literature, we

Mobilize to vaccinate: lessons learned from social mobilization for immunization in low and middle-income countries.

Creating and sustaining demand for immunization services is a global priority to ensure that vaccine-eligible populations are fully protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. Social mobilization remains a key health promotion strategy used by low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to promote vaccination demand. In this commentary, we synthesize illustrative evidence on successful social mobilization efforts promoting the uptake of immunization services in select LMICs. The first example focuses on Sierra Leone's routine immunization program during the Universal Child Immunization initiativ
