Social and structural barriers to housing among street-involved youth who use illicit drugs.

In Canada, approximately 150,000 youth live on the street. Street-involvement and homelessness have been associated with various health risks, including increased substance use, blood-borne infections and sexually transmitted diseases. We undertook a qualitative study to better understand the social and structural barriers street-involved youth who use illicit drugs encounter when seeking housing. We conducted 38 semi-structured interviews with street-involved youth in Vancouver, Canada from May to October 2008. Interviewees were recruited from the At-risk Youth Study (ARYS) cohort, which foll

Empirical methods for the estimation of the mixing probabilities for socially structured populations from a single survey sample.

"The role of variability of sexual behavior in the transmission dynamics of HIV and AIDS has been illustrated, through the use of mathematical models, by several investigators.... In this paper we describe some practical methods for estimating the deviations from random mixing from a single survey sample.... We include a description of the role of the estimated mixing probabilities in models for the spread of HIV, a discussion of alternatives and possible extensions of the methods described in this article, and an outline of future directions of research." Structure-function relationships of the peptide Paulistine: a novel toxin from the venom of the social wasp Polybia paulista.

BACKGROUND: The peptide Paulistine was isolated from the venom of wasp Polybia paulista. This peptide exists under a natural equilibrium between the forms: oxidised - with an intra-molecular disulphide bridge; and reduced - in which the thiol groups of the cysteine residues do not form the disulphide bridge. The biological activities of both forms of the peptide are unknown up to now. METHODS: Both forms of Paulistine were synthesised and the thiol groups of the reduced form were protected with the acetamidemethyl group [Acm-Paulistine] to prevent re-oxidation. The structure/activity relation

The perineal organ of male red colobus: its structure and possible social function as a mimic of female genitalia.

The perineal organ of male red colobus monkeys (Piliocolobus tephrosceles) is illustrated with photographs. I discuss its possible role as a mimic of female genitalia and how thereby it may play a role in social relations between adult and juvenile males and ultimately in the reproductive success of males. This is one of the few examples of a monkey species in which the male perineal anatomy appears to mimic the female external genitalia, contrary to the pattern in many New World monkey species that have hypertrophied clitorises possibly mimicking a penis or scrotum. Furthermore, I emphasize t

Exploring the Role of Social Network Structure in Disease Risk among U.S. Long-haul Truck Drivers in Urban Areas.

Objective: Using mixed methods, we explored properties of long-haul truckers' social networks potentially influencing STI/BBI acquisition and transmission. Methods: We recruited inner-city drug and sex network members (N = 88) for interviews. Blood and urine samples and vaginal swabs were collected to test for STIs/BBIs. Data were collected on participants' role in the network (trucker, sex worker, or intermediary), sexual and substance-use behaviors, and dyadic relationships with drug and/or sex contacts. We analyzed network data using UCINET. Results: Data revealed 2 major network clusters (

Role expansion of radiological technologists in intraoperative fluoroscopy in Japan: A simulation-based social network analysis of interprofessional collaborative structure.

INTRODUCTION: Following the 2021 revision of the Medical Radiological Technologists Act in Japan, radiological technologists (RTs) have assumed expanded responsibilities in intraoperative fluoroscopy, including greater participation in imaging support and procedural workflows. Although role expansion has been widely implemented, quantitative evidence regarding its impact on interprofessional collaborative structure within the operating theatre remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate how expanded RT involvement influences team integration and network structure. METHODS: A simulation-base

Sluggish cognitive tempo in psychiatrically hospitalized children: factor structure and relations to internalizing symptoms, social problems, and observed behavioral dysregulation.

As research examining sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) advances, it is important to examine the structure and validity of SCT in a variety of samples, including samples of children who are clinically-distressed but not referred specifically for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study used a large sample of psychiatrically hospitalized children (N = 680; 73 % male; 66 % African American) between the ages of 6 and 12 to examine the latent structure of SCT, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), depression, and anxiety using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Exploring the latent structure of two cognitive components of social anxiety: taxometric analyses of fears of negative and positive evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that social anxiety disorder is best characterized as having a dimensional latent structure. METHODS: In this study, we examined the latent structure of two cognitive components of social anxiety, fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and fear of positive evaluation (FPE), in a large undergraduate sample. Two taxometric procedures (MAMBAC, Mean Above Minus Below a Cut and MAXEIG, MAXimum EIGenvalue) were performed with indicator sets drawn from self-report measures of FNE and FPE. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Taxometric analyses, as well as comparison analyses ut

Dysfunction of the superior occipital gyrus in individuals with subclinical social anxiety and its mediating effect on gray matter structure.

The investigation of neuroimaging abnormalities of young adults with subclinical social anxiety will contribute to understand the brain mechanism of social anxiety during developing on early stage. In this study, we recruited twenty-six young adults with subclinical social anxiety and matched healthy controls to examine their resting-state brain functional changes reflected by amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), functional connectivity (FC) and effective connectivity (EC). Mediating effect models were used to investigate the mediation of brain functional alterations between gray mat

The medial prefrontal cortex as a proposed regulatory structure in the relationship between anxiety and perceived social support: a review.

Perceived social support is recognized as a critical protective factor against the development of mental health disorders. Anxiety disorders are the most common group of mental health disorders and have a substantial impact on individuals' well-being. Despite extensive research on anxiety and perceived social support, a significant gap exists in our understanding of the neural mechanisms linking these two phenomena. While several brain regions, including the amygdala, hippocampus, and insula, have been implicated in anxiety regulation and social support processing, the medial prefrontal cortex

Dosage of copy number variation at 22q11.2 mediates changes in cognition, social function and brain structure in autism spectrum disorder.

Microdeletion at 22q11.2, a common copy number variation (CNV) noted in neurodevelopmental disorders, may be associated with cognitive impairment. However, cognitive function in individuals with microduplication remains unclear. This work presents the genetic, clinical, and brain structural data of two men out of 335 probands with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) who had different CNV dosages at 22q11.2, and comparison with their siblings, 55 ASD probands, and 73 controls. Both showed severe autistic symptoms, but the proband with microduplication demonstrated better cognitive functions. Furth

Structural and social determinants of health shape the impact of neurodegeneration and cerebrovascular pathology on cognitive functioning in black adults.

INTRODUCTION: Black adults in the United States experience a disproportionately higher risk of dementia due to cumulative exposure to structural and social determinants of health (S/SDOH). Although structural neuroimaging provides markers of atrophy and cerebrovascular injury, less is known about how these biomarkers interact with S/SDOH to influence cognitive performance within minoritized populations. This study examined independent and interactive associations between a multidimensional S/SDOH Composite Index (S/SDOH-CI) and structural imaging-derived biomarkers among Black adults in an urb

Early life social defeat in mice reduces prefrontal innervation of downstream structures in a regionally specific manner.

Physical abuse in childhood and adolescence results in long lasting effects on mental and physical health in adulthood. The prefrontal cortex of adults exposed to abuse in childhood shows both functional and structural abnormalities in comparison to healthy controls. However, the changes in prefrontal innervation of specific downstream targets as a result of early life abuse are unclear. Here we used a novel abbreviated early adolescent chronic social defeat stress paradigm (5 day eaCSDS) to assess changes to prefrontal innervation in adult male and female C57BL/6 J mice. We injected control a

Impact of Social and Structural Determinants of Health on Bladder Cancer Outcomes: Focus on Non-Muscle-Invasive Disease.

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) requires repeated procedures, long-term surveillance, and sustained access to urologic care. Outcomes are highly sensitive to health disparities. This article examines how social determinants of health including insurance status, socioeconomic factors, gender, ethnicity, geography, and care fragmentation can impact NMIBC care. Delays in hematuria evaluation, underuse and inequitable distribution of intravesical therapy, and decreased surveillance adherence contribute to higher recurrence, progression, and worse quality-of-life outcomes. These disparit

Prevalence and social-structural correlates of forced moves among women living with HIV in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

Housing instability is a social determinant of health, with eviction being an extreme form of housing instability. There is little research on eviction among women living with HIV despite evidence that housing stability is critical for supporting the wellbeing of people living with HIV, and women in particular face gendered risks to housing stability. This study examined the associations between social-structural factors and forced moves among women living with HIV with data drawn from the Sexual Health & HIV/AIDS Longitudinal Women's Needs Assessment, a community-based cohort study of women l

Disparities in access to health and support services for people with disability in Australia: a scoping review of the structural social determinants.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inequities in health and social services exacerbate barriers for disadvantaged groups within the disability community, leading to poorer health outcomes and diminished quality of life. We aimed to evaluate how structural determinants function to shape disparities in access to health and support services for people with disability. METHODS: We followed Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework. A comprehensive search strategy was implemented across five major databases—Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus—focusing on four key concepts: social determinants, dis
