The effect of Interaction Anxiousness Scale and Brief Social Phobia Scale for screening social anxiety disorder in college students: a study on discriminative validity.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent mental health problems, but there is little research concerning the effective screening instruments in practice. METHODS: This study was designed to examine the discriminative validity of Interaction Anxiousness Scale (IAS) and Brief Social Phobia Scale (BSPS) for the screening of SAD through the compared and combined analysis. Firstly, 421 Chinese undergraduates were screened by the IAS and BSPS. Secondly, in the follow-up stage, 248 students were interviewed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. Receiver opera

Cross-cultural validation of the social empathy index: a psychometric study among Japanese medical students.

BACKGROUND: Assessing and fostering social empathy among medical students is crucial for advancing health equity. While education on the social determinants of health (SDH) has become increasingly important in medical curricula, its impact has been evaluated mostly through qualitative approaches. Quantitative assessment tools that assess social empathy remain limited in medical education. The Social Empathy Index (SEI) is a self-report instrument designed to assess interpersonal and social empathy and may have relevance for medical education. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the psycho

Mapping social relevance in affective scenes: A large-scale multidimensional rating study.

Understanding how individuals evaluate social content in affective scenes is crucial for research in emotion, social cognition, and decision-making. However, standardized image databases often lack fine-grained ratings of social dimensions beyond basic emotional content. We present a normative dataset of 296 affective scenes rated by 424 adult participants across six social-affective dimensions: social relevance, emotion sharing, action sharing, interpersonal equality, scene pleasantness, and participatory arousal. Each image was independently coded for objective features such as number of peo

A psychometric study of the Flourishing Scale for people living with dementia.

INTRODUCTION: There are few validated strengths-based outcome measures for evaluations of psychosocial interventions in dementia and measurement of the concept of flourishing has not been directly explored. This study therefore examined the psychometric properties of the Flourishing Scale (FS)-an eight-item generic self-report measure of social-psychological well-being-and how it might be adapted for people with dementia. METHOD: A secondary data analysis of baseline data from the Journeying Through Dementia study, a randomized controlled trial of a self-management intervention for older adul

The attitudes toward hookah smoking in the MENA region scale (ATHS-MENA): factor analysis and validation.

BACKGROUND: Hookah smoking poses a global health challenge, especially in the MENA region where it holds deep cultural significance. Existing smoking scales often lack the cultural nuances needed for accurate assessment. This study aimed to develop and validate a culturally relevant instrument, the Attitudes Toward Hookah Smoking Scale in the MENA region (ATHS-MENA). METHODS: The ATHS-MENA was developed through a systematic process including item generation, expert review, cognitive interviewing, and pilot testing. The scale was administered to participants in the UAE. Exploratory factor anal

Trait aggression in two representative U.S. surveys: Testing the generalizability of college samples.

Aggression research often relies upon convenient samples with unknown generalizability to populations of interest, potentially threatening external validity. This article details the measurement properties of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire Short Form (BPAQ-SF) and its subscales in two nationally representative U.S. samples (N = 924) and a concurrent study with U.S. college students (N = 384). The results provide useful benchmarks for generalizing BPAQ-SF results from convenient samples to U.S. adults, including distributions, reliability, and factor structure. The results also confirm

Effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol on affiliative social behaviour: A systematic review of rodent studies.

INTRODUCTION: Affiliative social behaviour is critical for survival and well-being and is shaped by complex neurobiological systems, including the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, is a partial agonist at cannabinoid receptors and directly modulates ECS signaling. Given increasing cannabis use globally, understanding the effects of THC on social functioning is essential. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of preclinical studies indexed in MEDLINE and PsycINFO to examine the effects of THC on social behaviour in w

Experimental assessment of seizure-like behaviors in a girl with Rett syndrome.

Contextual events are recognized to affect seizure-like behaviors, yet there is limited research on procedures assessing contextual control. This study aimed to examine the utilization of a brief experimental precursor functional analysis within a clinical team assessment. Furthermore, the study explored if telehealth supervision could guide a parent administered replication of the functional analysis. The participants were a young female with Rett syndrome and a history of epilepsy as well as non-epileptic seizures and her mother. The functional analysis procedures consisted of the systematic

Citizenship and recovery: two intertwined concepts for civic-recovery.

BACKGROUND: Validation of the psychometric properties of a new measure of citizenship was required for a research project in the province of Quebec, Canada. This study was meant to study the interplay between recovery- and citizenship-oriented supportive employment. As recovery and citizenship were expected to be two related concepts, convergent validity between the Citizenship Measure (CM) and the Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) was tested. METHODS: Study objectives were to: 1) conduct exploratory factor analyses on the CM and confirmatory factor analysis on the RAS tools (construct validity

When Scientific Validity Overshadows Justice: An Analysis of a Liberian Institutional Review Board's Minutes (2018-2019) Using the Emanuel et al. Framework.

Post-Ebola Liberia experienced rapid growth in internationally sponsored health research, increasing demands on institutional review boards (IRBs) amid constrained oversight capacity. This qualitative single-case study analyzed meeting minutes from 2018-2019 from one Liberian IRB, coding 124 documented ethical concerns using Emanuel et al.'s eight-principle framework. Scientific validity accounted for nearly half of concerns, while fair participant selection and informed consent formed a second tier, and collaborative partnership and social value were rarely mentioned. These findings suggest t

A Literature Review Examining Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy for Individuals Diagnosed With Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a specific subtype of anxiety disorder where individuals experience uncomfortable social situations that induce anxious feelings including nervousness and panic. Computer technology has been applied in interventions for many mental health disorders. We aim to understand and explore the use of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) to treat adults with SAD. We conducted a literature search using relevant mesh keywords in PubMed and PsycINFO. Six studies met inclusion criteria in our final qualitative synthesis review. Results showed a significant reduction in S

Structural Validity of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised Short Form: Application to Brooding and Reflection.

Research on social problem-solving ability or the cognitive-behavioral processes used to find successful solutions to everyday problems has been advanced by the availability of easy-to-administer self-report measures. The goal of the current study is twofold: (a) validate the factor structure of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised: Short Form (SPSI-R:S) and (b) examine the relationship between depressive rumination subtypes and dimensions of social problem solving. An initial confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) in Sample 1 revealed poor model fit. An exploratory factor analysis reveale

'Look at me when I am talking to you': evidence and assessment of social pragmatics interventions for children with autism and social communication disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article provides an analysis of the effectiveness of commonly used interventions for social pragmatic interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and social communication disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Several evidence-based social skills interventions are emerging, including peer mentoring, social skills groups, and video modeling. Social stories are effective as supports for improved interactions but generalization is limited. Research supports the need for multimodality and individualized treatment programs. Research validates that video and visual l

Narcissism at the crossroads: phenotypic description of pathological narcissism across clinical theory, social/personality psychology, and psychiatric diagnosis.

This review documents two themes of emphasis found in phenotypic descriptions of pathological narcissism across clinical theory, social/personality psychology, and psychiatric diagnosis. Clinical theories of narcissism spanning 35 years consistently describe variations in the expression of pathological narcissism that emphasize either grandiosity or vulnerable affects and self-states. Recent research in social/personality psychology examining the structure of narcissistic personality traits consistently finds two broad factors representing Grandiosity-Exhibitionism and Vulnerability-Sensitivit

Identity fusion in children: A validation of the Dynamic Identity Fusion Index.

Identity fusion is a strong form of group alignment, in which individuals experience a visceral sense of oneness with the group, motivating extreme forms of pro-group action. However, little is known about the emergence and development of identity fusion across the lifespan, largely due to the absence of validated assessment tools for children. The Dynamic Identity Fusion Index (DIFI) has proven to be an effective and efficient measure of identity fusion in adults and the present study aims to validate its use in children. Our findings indicate that fusion with 'own family' versus an unfamilia

Measuring minds across generations: a theoretical framework on psychometric validity, interpretive frameworks, and contextual norming in cross-cohort psychological research.

BACKGROUND: Psychological research increasingly compares mental health outcomes across generations, with studies reporting elevated anxiety and depression in Generation Z and Alpha. Current instruments, interpretive frameworks, and normative standards were developed using language and contextual assumptions from earlier cohorts developing in distinct technological, economic, and social ecosystems. AIM: This Hypothesis and Theory article proposes to (i) evaluate measurement validity and interpretive framework issues in cross-generational research, (ii) analyze how contexts shape construct mean

The Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score-Physical Function Shortform Does Not Adequately Represent Physical Functioning in Patients Undergoing Total Hip Arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVES: A frequently used patient-reported outcome measure for assessing physical functioning in patients with hip problems is the 5-item Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score-Physical Function Shortform (HOOS-PS). Nevertheless, its content validity (whether this instrument adequately reflects the construct of physical functioning) is unknown. This study aimed to assess the content validity of the HOOS-PS. METHODS: A quantitative and qualitative research approach was used. Physical functioning was defined as the ability to perform activities that require physical actions, rangin
