The profile of vulnerable groups in the context of the growth of gambling in Kazakhstan: social and demographic risk factors.

The primary objective of the present article is to identify the socio-demographic factors that increase the risk of developing gambling addiction in Kazakhstan and to analyze the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions through the application of both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The research included two samples of individuals aged 18 to 65: 782 participants for the assessment of the severity of gambling addiction across different social groups, and 148 participants for the empirical evaluation of a rehabilitation program. The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) was used as the

The association between the degree of social vulnerability and maternal anemia and other adverse perinatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal anemia in pregnancy is associated with many adverse maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. The role of social determinants of health (SDOH) in the development of maternal anemia and other adverse outcomes is continually evolving. One such newer tool, the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), measures an individual's community-level SDOH, with higher SVI denoting higher vulnerability. Our objective was to evaluate the association between SVI, maternal anemia, and other adverse perinatal outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of pregnant individuals delivering singletons

The association of the four social vulnerability themes and COVID-19 mortality rates in U.S. Counties.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social vulnerability and COVID-19 mortality rates during the whole outbreak in U.S. counties. COVID-19 deaths were gleaned from the USA Facts. Independent variables were gleaned from the CDC's Social Vulnerability Index. Spatial autoregressive models were used for data analysis. Results show that counties with more social vulnerability (socioeconomic) were positively associated with higher COVID-19 mortality rates. Counties with more social vulnerability (household composition & disability) were positively associated with higher

Assessing social vulnerabilities of salivary gland cancer care, prognosis, and treatment in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland cancers (SGC)-social determinants of health (SDoH) investigations are limited by narrow scopes of SGC-types and SDoH. This Social Vulnerability Index (SVI)-study hypothesized that socioeconomic status (SES) most contributed to SDoH-associated SGC-disparities. METHODS: Retrospective cohort of 24 775 SGCs assessed SES, minority-language status (ML), household composition (HH), housing-transportation (HT), and composite-SDoH measured by the SVI via regressions with surveillance and survival length, late-staging presentation, and treatment (surgery, radio-, chemotherapy

Social Vulnerability and Mental Health Among People with HIV and Substance Use: The Role of Race.

Poor mental health significantly impacts people with HIV (PWH) and those who drink alcohol. Limited data exist on the combined effects of social determinants of health (social vulnerability) on mental health in PWH with unhealthy substance use. We investigated the relationship between social vulnerability and poor mental health in PWH and whether this relationship differed by race/ethnicity. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the Boston ARCH Cohort among PWH with current or past unhealthy substance use. We created a 23-item social vulnerability index (SVI) using a deficit

Impact of Social Vulnerability, Race, and Urbanicity on Early Nutritional Outcomes in Patients With Cleft Palate.

Patients with cleft palate experience early feeding difficulties, resulting in increased hospital utilization due to poor nutritional status. Sociodemographic factors may impact access and outcomes for cleft patients. This study investigates the association of social vulnerability, race, and urbanicity on birth encounter metrics and failure to thrive (FTT) rates for patients with cleft palate. Retrospective data from 2013 to 2023 was queried from Cosmos, a national deidentified database from Epic electronic health record. Birth metrics, the prevalence of FTT, and MyChart activation rates were

Neighborhood social vulnerability and disparities in time to kidney cancer surgical treatment and survival in Arizona.

BACKGROUND: Hispanics and American Indians (AI) have high kidney cancer incidence and mortality rates in Arizona. This study assessed: (1) whether racial and ethnic minority patients and patients from neighborhoods with high social vulnerability index (SVI) experience a longer time to surgery after clinical diagnosis, and (2) whether time to surgery, race and ethnicity, and SVI are associated with upstaging to pT3/pT4, disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS). METHODS: Arizona Cancer Registry (2009-2018) kidney and renal pelvis cases (n = 4592) were analyzed using logistic regre

The Role of Social Support on Depression Among Vulnerable Caregivers Reporting Bidirectional Physical Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health concern found across genders, socioeconomic strata, cultures, and ethnicities. While IPV is traditionally examined from either the victim or initiator role, it is also important to consider relationships in which both partners experience and demonstrate violence. The current study examined the relation between IPV chronicity and depression among 403 female caregivers with young children. Specifically, the current study examined the association between bidirectional IPV and depression. Furthermore, the impact of social support on depression lev

When nature pushes back: environmental impact and the spatial redistribution of socially vulnerable populations.

Objectives. This research investigates the spatial redistribution of socially vulnerable subpopulations during long-term recovery from natural disaster. We hypothesize that the local environmental impact of a disaster influences this redistribution process and that how it does so varies by the urban or rural context in which the disaster occurs.Methods. To test these hypotheses, we use a novel research design that combines the natural experiment offered by Hurricane Andrew with GIS technology and local census data.Results. Findings indicate that in a more urbanized disaster zone (Miami), long-

The impact of social vulnerability index on survival following autologous stem cell transplant for multiple myeloma.

Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is the standard of care for eligible patients with multiple myeloma (MM) to prolong progression-free survival (PFS). While several factors affect survival following ASCT, the impact of social determinants of health such as the CDC Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) is not well documented. This single-center retrospective analysis evaluated the impact of SVI on PFS following ASCT in MM patients. 225 patients with MM who underwent ASCT participated, with 51% transplanted in the last 5 years. At 5 years post-transplant, 55 (50%) achieved PFS

Disparities in Social Vulnerability and Premature Mortality among Decedents with Hepatitis B, United States, 2010-2019.

BACKGROUND: Current US hepatitis B mortality rates remain three times higher than the national target. Mortality reduction will depend on addressing hepatitis B disparities influenced by social determinants of health. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe characteristics of hepatitis B-listed decedents, which included US birthplace status and county social vulnerability attributes and quantify premature mortality. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 17,483 hepatitis B-listed decedents using the 2010-2019 US Multiple-Cause-of-Death data merged with the county-level Social Vu

Social Vulnerability and the Prevalence of Opioid Use Disorder Among Older Medicare Beneficiaries in U.S. Counties.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has investigated the factors associated with the prevalence of opioid use disorder (OUD) among older adults (65+), which has rapidly increased in the past decade. However, little is known about the relationship between social vulnerability and the prevalence of OUD, and even less is about whether the correlates of the prevalence of OUD vary across the social vulnerability spectrum. This study aims to fill these gaps. METHODS: We assemble a county-level data set in the contiguous United States (U.S.) by merging 2021 Medicare claims with the CDC's social vulnerabilit

Perceived vulnerability for Lyme disease questionnaire: A social science tool for understanding tick-borne disease attitudes.

Lyme disease has emerged as a growing epidemic across the U.S., with tick populations spreading north because of a plethora of human-induced factors. As the scope of this problem grows, there is a need to understand how vulnerable the public perceives themselves to be and how perceived vulnerability as a psychological construct influences public behavior. A growing body of literature has explored individual risk perceptions and individual preventative behaviors toward Lyme disease, but there remains a notable research gap regarding the concept of vulnerability. This empirical study establishes

Multidimensional vulnerability among older adults in Germany : Social support buffers the negative association with life satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Multidimensional vulnerability among older adults, characterized by low levels of individual resources in different life domains, has been insufficiently studied. This phenomenon is considered to be associated with a marked decrease in overall life satisfaction. Social support is supposed to buffer the negative effect of multidimensional vulnerability on life satisfaction. METHODS: Analyses are based on the German Health Update dataset (GEDA 2014/2015-EHIS). The analytic sample includes respondents ≥ 65 years (N = 5826). Confirmatory factor analyses were performed to construct a l
