Desensitized to Trauma: The Jackson Water Crisis, Environmental Injustice, and Implications for Public Health Social Work.

In 2021, Jackson, Mississippi, received national attention after a winter storm caused the failure of operations at the city's largest water treatment facility. Years of neglect to a crumbling infrastructure triggered the Jackson water crisis, leaving residents without clean and reliable access to water. Predating any one administration, Black and low-income residents had long raised concerns about excessive water bills, broken water mains, poor water quality, and deterioration of the city's water system. Despite years of advocacy and concerned citizens, agenda items continued from one adminis

Evaluating the Impact of Eating Disorder Early Intervention on Young People's Work, Education and Social Functioning.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) impair education, work and social functioning. First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders (FREED) is a nationally implemented early intervention service model in England for young people (16-25 years) with an ED duration of three years or less. This study evaluated the impact of FREED on functional outcomes using data from the multi-site FREED-Upscaled (FREED-Up) study. METHODS: A longitudinal design analysed data from 278 patients recruited in 2017-2018 across four specialist ED services. Work, education and social functioning were assessed

Professional competencies in social work concerned with alcohol use problems in Lithuania: Moving beyond 'know-how'.

Aims: There has been relatively little research on professional competencies in social work with individuals with alcohol use problems. The present study investigates the patterns of competencies and abilities that constitute different competence dimensions in this field of social work. Additionally, the study attempts to confirm the validity and assess the reliability in the use of the Perceived Social Work Competence Scale (PSWCS) for measuring professional competencies in Lithuania. Exploratory factor analysis was used for both purposes. Methods: First, the translated scale's reliability an

Health and healthcare use of homeless population: Evaluation study of joint social work and healthcare provision.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness as an extreme form of poverty perpetuates and exacerbates health inequalities. People experiencing homelessness face a mortality rate 10 times higher than that of the general population, with an average age of death at 45. There is a significant disconnect between the mainstream healthcare system and the specific health needs of people experiencing homelessness, leading to substantial human and economic costs. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this evaluation study is to assess the impact of an intervention in nurse-led healthcare outreach services to people experiencing ho

Sleep Health Education to Promote Public Health: Attitudes and Desired Learning Goals among Social Work Students.

Social workers are often front line behavioral health providers for underserved populations, many of whom experience sleep disturbances. Inadequate sleep presents a public health challenge and is associated with many adverse physical health and mental health consequences. Social workers are uniquely positioned to promote sleep health among individuals experiencing health inequities. However, sleep is rarely included as part of the curricula in social work programs in the U.S. We conducted qualitative formative research to investigate social work students' perceptions of sleep education and des

Social Determination of HIV: Women's Relationship Work in the Context of Mass Incarceration and Housing Vulnerability.

We contrast a typical "social determinants of health" framing with a more dynamic and complex "social determination of health" framing to analyze HIV-related sexual risk among women in low-income, segregated neighborhoods in New Haven, CT. Using an abductive approach, we analyze repeated, longitudinal qualitative interviews conducted over a 2-year period with a sample of 14 HIV-negative women who engaged in sex with men during the study period. Three case studies are presented to demonstrate how behaviors and sexual practices typically described as HIV "risks" can be understood as part of the

Impact of transition in work status and social participation on cognitive performance among elderly in India.

INTRODUCTION: Transition to the oldage marks a change in work and social participation. Socio-economic and physical conditions arising from this change pose a risk for cognitive outcomes among the elderly. Gender shows different pathways to deal with the pattern of participation and to maintain cognitive health. In India, work participation in the oldage is an outcome of financial deprivations and lack of support. At the same time, alterations in social interactions can induce stress and precipitate cognitive decline in oldage. A dearth of studies in this domain motivates us to estimate the ef

Nowadays, there are no consistent epidemiological studies on the actual impact of the disease on work and family of these patients in a representative manner; therefore, the purpose of the study is to analyze the impact on family, employment and social environment in a representative sample of patients with FM attending Primary Public Care Centers in Spain. METHODS: We carried out an epidemiological study, with a probability sampling procedure, stratified, relativ

More than meets the eye: social, economic, and emotional impacts of work-related injury and illness.

The impact of an occupational illness or injury on an injured worker can be severe. This study assessed several dimensions of the impact on a group of 50 injured workers, all patients at an Occupational Health Center. The dimensions assessed included aspects of access to health care, support from treating physicians in obtaining Workers' Compensation benefits, financial impacts, the role of attorneys and "Independent Medical Examiners," and the impact on mental health. Many reported that their treating physician did not want to become involved in Workers' Compensation, despite indicating a bel

Women's health issues: a review of the current literature in the social work journals, 1985-1992.

To assess the ways in which social work is addressing issues in women's health care, the profession's journals from 1985-1992 were searched, yielding 36 articles. Over half addressed issues of reproduction and sexuality including pregnancy, family planning, abortion, substance abuse in pregnancy, and fetal protection policies. Remaining articles addressed medical diagnoses; including AIDS/HIV/STDs, cancer, illnesses associated with aging, PMS, Turner's Syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Foci, methodologies, and recommendations are discussed and the authors critically analyze the articles'

[Promoting participation in sports clubs: sports- and physical activity-oriented social work with people with disabilities].

Physical activity is an important resource for health, development and social participation in childhood and adolescence. For children and adolescents with disabilities, sport and movement can support motor development, psychosocial well-being, self-efficacy, and social inclusion, while also contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases and obesity. However, access to inclusive physical activity opportunities remains limited. Barriers include inaccessible facilities, insufficient transport and assistance services, a lack of low-threshold offers, and uncertainties among professionals in de

Mental health and social relationships shape the work-from-home experience: lessons from COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The great "work-from-home experiment" prompted by the pandemic has left an indelible mark both at the individual level-shaping expectations around life, work, and career-and at the organizational level. Evidence suggests that organizational success and performance are highly dependent on employee health and well-being, which contribute to higher productivity and engagement. AIM: This study aims to (1) examine the association between changes in depression severity and the work experience evaluation given by the staff of a large Italian research institute at the end of the forced te
