OBJECTIVES: In women, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death. Screening tests are the basis for early diagnosis. In Iranian women, the mortality rate of breast cancer is high due to insufficient screening examinations and delayed visits for care. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the factors affecting breast self-examinations among Iranian women employed in medical careers.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 501 women working in the medical professions at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in western Iran in 2018. The subjects were s

BACKGROUND: During the initial years of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a rapid growth in virtual peer support interventions for health and social care workers. While these were often positively evaluated initially, there has been little research on their ongoing utility in the post-COVID response context, characterized by healthcare worker shortages and rising healthcare demands. This paper applies the Levesque Framework on access to healthcare to explore health and social care workers perspectives and experiences of virtual peer support services.
METHODS: Nine online focus groups were held

This study explores how cultural identity can be preserved in dementia long-term care as resident populations become increasingly diverse. Using a deductive approach informed by the Person-Environment fit framework, the study examines care workers' and managers' experiences and strategies across physical and social environments. Findings show that indoor and outdoor settings, communication practices, activities, relationships, and cultural rituals all influence culturally responsive care. Competing priorities such as safety, limited resources, and varying cultural competence, shape the long-te

PURPOSE: Community Health Workers (CHWs) represent a potential strategy in ophthalmology to address adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) and improve vision outcomes. In this study, we explored the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of a structured CHW intervention among patients with diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective single-center pilot study conducted at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. Adult participants (≥ 18 years) with diabetes and at least one adverse SDoH participated in the study. The CHW worked with the participant for on average 6 months to a

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health and wellbeing of social workers working with people with learning disabilities has not been fully explored. This paper reports findings from a large United Kingdom study that surveyed health and care workers in six phases of the pandemic and shortly thereafter (2020-23) relating to 310 social workers who worked with people with learning disabilities. Mann-Whitney U tests revealed that these social workers experienced a decline in wellbeing over the pandemic period, but this lessened as time passed. Logistic regression showed that social worker

BACKGROUND: Telework is increasingly prevalent and holds the potential to serve as an accommodation, facilitating inclusion and promoting healthy participation among various segments of the workforce, such as aging employees, individuals with chronic illnesses or those living alone with one or more dependents. Nevertheless, this promising avenue presents management challenges that remain underexplored in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the challenges in telework management related to accommodations, inclusion and the health of workers with life situations entailing spe

When violence against a child is reported to authorities, it is crucial that its severity is communicated effectively and evaluated accurately by professionals. This study, conducted in two phases, investigated perceptual differences in calibration and accuracy regarding psychological and physical violence against children among parents, social workers, and laypeople. In Phase 1, parents who had witnessed violence against their children, committed by a current or former partner, provided first-person narratives describing these events and rated the severity of the violence. In Phase 2, social

BACKGROUND: The underlying mechanisms of post-COVID syndrome (PCS) are still not fully understood. While pre-existing conditions have been described as a risk factor for severe PCS in the general population, data specific to different occupational groups in this context is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the impact of pre-existing conditions on severe post-COVID syndrome among the occupational group of healthcare and social services employees.
METHODS: Baseline data from a longitudinal, observational study were analysed. In February 2021, health workers who had a COVID-19 infection i

Introduction Social Work (SW) referrals made in the emergency department (ED) highlight the weaknesses in the existing support system for vulnerable and disadvantaged patients. SW personnel play a pivotal role in some EDs but are not integrated into the team in several jurisdictions. Our objective was to provide a detailed description of the need for SW support in the ED setting by describing SW consultation patterns in an urban ED location. Methods A three-year analysis of ED SW referrals made through a network of four acute care hospitals serving a city population of 1.2 million inhabitants

AIM: The aim of the study was to obtain a deeper understanding of the experiences of the discharge process among different professionals.
BACKGROUND: An optimal discharge process for hospitalized elderly to other forms of care is of crucial importance, especially since health and medical policies encourages shorter hospital stays and increased healthcare service in outpatient care.
METHODS: Nurses and social workers from inpatient care, outpatient care, municipal care and social services were interviewed. Eight focus-group interviews with a total of 31 persons were conducted. The subsequent

Objectives. To describe the health care and social services needs addressed by community health workers (CHWs) through referrals in the Community Health Workers for COVID-19 Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program. Methods. We performed a descriptive analysis of national performance measure data from 67 CCR recipients from 2021 to 2024 documenting referrals, alongside 2 web-based surveys of 63 program administrators and 689 CHWs in the United States in early 2024. Results. CHWs made 464 158 social and 323 769 health referrals, with 282 596 referrals completed. Referrals included servi

This article looks at the work of legal guardians in Switzerland. They are civil servants, typically qualified social workers, responsible for implementing protective measures ("safeguarding") for adults considered vulnerable. This work can be understood as "dirty work." Professionals must provide imposed help to individuals who are often non-consenting. They carry out coercive tasks that are considered morally questionable. Furthermore, guardians interact with stigmatized individuals, which can expose them to the risk of stigma contamination. Finally, they are entrusted with caring for "unpla

BACKGROUND: After the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and resulting economic austerity, the rise in illicit drug use engendered an increased need for people who use drugs (PWUD) to access medical care, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Research shows that perceptions of medical staff towards PWUD facilitate or act as a barrier to accessing health care. This study provides a better understanding of health and social work professionals' perceptions by assessing stigma levels towards PWUD in Athens, Greece.
METHODS: This is a mixed-method study. It calculates the stigma score for professionals (

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is expected to acknowledge physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social needs, to which social workers can contribute with expertise on recognizing the importance of social relations and how social inequalities impact on individuals. The social work profession faces challenges in claiming their contributions in the hierarchies of medical professions. Polices play an important role in constructing and positioning responsibilities of professions.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze how social workers are positioned as contributors to palliative care within national-l

Background: Studies have shown that working in frontline healthcare roles during epidemics and pandemics was associated with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to identify demographic, work-related and other predictors for clinically significant PTSD, depression, and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic in UK frontline health and social care workers (HSCWs), and to compare rates of distress across different groups of HCSWs working in different roles and settings. Methods: A convenience sample (n = 1194) of frontline UK HC

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a significant public health problem for individuals engaged in tasks involving repetitive upper limb movements and extended computer use, including those working in the social security sector. The International Labor Organization (ILO) has listed musculoskeletal disorders as an occupational disease that requires preventive measures in workplaces. However, there is limited information in the context of Tanzania. Therefore, this study aimed to address this knowledge gap, focusing on the magnitude and risk factors of MSDs among social
