Refining and validating the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale.

BACKGROUND: The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Social Phobia Scale are companion measures for assessing symptoms of social anxiety and social phobia. The scales have good reliability and validity across several samples, however, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses have yielded solutions comprising substantially different item content and factor structures. These discrepancies are likely the result of analyzing items from each scale separately or simultaneously. The current investigation sets out to assess items from those scales, both simultaneously and separately, using explora

A model of preverbal social development and its application to social dysfunctions in autism.

Studies of early face perception are used to develop a model of how face expressions might be transduced to initiate consonant internal affect, related outward expressions and other behaviours. Underlying neural mechanisms and processes are identified. The model is generalised to offer an account of aspects of typical preverbal social development. It is then used to develop aetiological hypotheses about the lack of social interest and motivation in autism and to provide a framework for evaluating other theories of autism. Although derived from existing literature, the model offers a distinctiv

Differentiating symptoms of social anxiety and depression in adults with social anxiety disorder.

Although studies have suggested a strong overlap between social anxiety disorder and depression, this is the first study to examine the ability of commonly used measures to differentiate symptoms of these disorders in a sample of clients with social anxiety disorder. Structural equation modeling revealed that commonly used measures of social anxiety and depression can differentiate the two constructs, rather than simply reflecting a single construct of overall distress. Logistic regression analyses indicated that scores on depressive symptom measures could predict which socially anxious client

Social interpretation bias and generalized social phobia: the influence of developmental experiences.

Patients with generalized social phobia (N = 42) and non-phobic community controls (N = 42) engaged in a social interaction with an experimental assistant whose behavior was used to create either a positive or an ambiguous social environment. Participants then rated their own performance and their partner's behavior. As a group, social phobic patients displayed negatively biased self-judgments, but failed to display biased social interpretations. Among the social phobia group, a social developmental history marked by parental hostility was associated with negative interpretations of partner be

Social support and social strain among husbands and wives: a multilevel analysis.

In response to recent calls in the literature for within-person examinations of social support processes over time, this study explores the relationships of spousal support, spousal strain, and well-being among husbands and wives, both within the same day and across days. Eighty-three couples were interviewed and completed a structured diary twice daily for 1 week. The results of multilevel hierarchical modeling suggest that both spousal support and spousal strain made significant, independent contributions to concurrent negative affect, although only spousal support was a significant predicto

Social anxiety in childhood: the relationship with self and observer rated social skills.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety of childhood is a common and pervasive problem. Traditional approaches to treating these difficulties have focused on providing afflicted children with social skills training. This approach has met with some, but not complete success. Recent reconceptualisations of social anxiety in the adult literature have emphasised the role of negative cognition regarding one's own social skills. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that a misperception of social skills, rather than a skills deficit per se, may be most pertinent to the understanding of social anxiety. This stud

The primate amygdala and the neurobiology of social behavior: implications for understanding social anxiety.

The amygdala has long been implicated in the mediation of emotional and social behaviors. Because there are very few human subjects with selective bilateral damage of the amygdala, much of the evidence for these functional associations has come from studies employing animal subjects. Macaque monkeys live in complex, highly organized social groups that are characterized by stable and hierarchical relationships among individuals who engage in complex forms of social communication, such as facial expressions. Understanding the role of the amygdala in animals that display a level of social sophist

[Nongovernmental organizations and AIDS, social intervention, and new ties in social solidarity].

Starting with a brief contextual analysis of the social scenario in which the AIDS epidemic is occurring in Brazil, the article focuses on the formation of the country's first nongovernmental organizations in the struggle against AIDS. There are peculiarities to AIDS NGOs to the extent that they display an ambivalence between the characteristics of a professional institution and a lobbying group, apart from the fact that dealing with sexuality and death breaks down the line between the public and the private spheres. The case in point is the Grupo Pela Vidda (For Life Group) in Rio de Janeiro,

Social support, social dysfunction and stressful life events in neurotic patients.

The relationship between social support, stressful life events and psychosocial dysfunction was studied in 197 neurotic patients comprising 65 patients of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, 81 of Dysthymia and 51 of Dissoiative (conversion) Disorders. It was seen that Dysthymics perceived themselves to have significantly less social support in comparison to Generalized Anxiety or Dissociative Disorders patients. Significant correlations between social support and life events and social support and dysfunction were also obtained and it was observed that lack of social support is negatively correlate

Social support and social action organizing in a "grey ghetto": the tenderloin experience.

The Tenderloin Senior Outreach Project (TSOP) is presented as a case study of effective community-based organizing among the isolated elderly in one of America's large "grey ghettos." Based on the theoretical underpinnings of social support theory and Freire's "education for critical consciousness," the Project has attempted to address the interrelated problems of poor health, social isolation and powerlessness endemic among the elderly in Single Room Occupancy hotels. The Project's metamorphosis is traced from a university-sponsored community development effort to a community-controlled organi

[The Department for Tropical Medicine of the Robert Koch-Institute during the "Third Reich": research areas, actors, and contributions to Nazi expansionist politics].

Using the methods of institutional history, this article examines the Department for Tropical Medicine of the Robert Koch-Institute for Infectious Diseases in Berlin. The Heads of Department were deeply involved in the crimes against humanity during National Socialism. The relationship between science and politics is analysed with regard to the so-called self-mobilization of scientists, especially during Word War II. Particularly Gerhard Rose accumulated various posts in science, the military and in state organizations during National Socialism, extending in this way his influence on research

Measuring behavioral responses to a social stressor: Does the Social Performance Rating Scale have utility beyond social anxiety disorder?

The observer-rated Social Performance Rating Scale (SPRS) indexes anxious behaviors exhibited in social contexts. Although the SPRS has been used almost exclusively to study social anxiety disorder (SAD), other emotional disorders are also characterized by heightened responses to social stressors, hinting that the SPRS could serve as a transdiagnostic state measure of behavioral anxiety. To explore this possibility, adults with generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder (n = 105) and adults with no psychopathology (n = 35) delivered a speech to a committee of mock behavioral exp

Decoupling between hub-connected functional connectivity of the social brain network and real-world social network in individuals with social anhedonia.

Altered hub regions in brain network have been consistently reported in patients with schizophrenia. However, it is unclear whether similar altered hub regions of the brain would be exhibited in individuals with subclinical features of schizophrenia such as social anhedonia (SA). In this study, we examined the hub regions of resting-state social brain network (SBN) of 35 participants with SA and 50 healthy controls (HC). We further examined the prediction effect of hub-connected FCs with SBN on the real-life social network characteristics. Our findings showed that the right amygdala, left temp

Neurobiology of Social Touch.

Social touch is a critical component of our daily lives, shaping our interactions with friends and loved ones. Reduced social touch, especially during early life, can have detrimental effects on health and well-being. A mechanistic understanding of the neural circuits for social touch is still underway, despite its centrality. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of social touch, a cellular and molecular emphasis must be placed on signaling and connectivity among neurons of the skin, spinal cord, and brain. Here, I review research on the molecules, cells, and circuits of the social touch n

Tinkering with social tinkering.

Our commentators have broadly welcomed the notion of social tinkering, while also offering a range of suggestions, refinements, and potential challenges. In our response, we clarify the concept of social tinkering, sharpen our account of the six stages of cultural evolution, consider whether additional mechanisms are needed to explain the emergence of cultural complexity, and explore a range of possible extensions to the social tinkering framework. We conclude by discussing broader implications and future directions for this research program, including a reconsideration of Rogers' paradox.

Psychostimulants and social behaviors.

Mounting evidence from animal models and human studies indicates that psychostimulants can significantly affect social behaviors. This is not surprising considering that the neural circuits underlying the regulation and expression of social behaviors are highly overlapped with those targeted by psychostimulants, which in most cases have strong rewarding and, consequently, addictive properties. In the present work, we provide an overview regarding the effects of illicit and prescription psychostimulants, such as cocaine, amphetamine-type stimulants, methylphenidate or modafinil, upon social beh

Understanding social frailty.

Social frailty, along with physical and psychological frailties, is one of the components of frailty that has been reported to increase the incidence of adverse health outcomes. Although the prevalence of social frailty is relatively high, consensus on how to define and measure it is insufficient. In considering social frailty, living alone, interaction with neighbors, and social participation are important indicators, and interaction with neighbors and social participation, which are modifiable factors, are important countermeasures. The promotion of these social activities will contribute to

[Social media, are they necessary?].

OBJECTIVES: the aim of the present monograph is to update the estimation of the number of people living with cancer in Italy, to describe geographic variability, and estimate the number of long-term survivors, i.e., people living five years or more after a cancer diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: the study included the data of the AIRTUMdatabase. Twenty-four Cancer Registries (CRs) (covering 27% of the Italian population) collected information on the incidence and vital status of 1,275,353 cases diagnosed between 1978 and 2005. For each CR, the observed prevalence was calculated up to the max

Social sperm freezing.

Increased paternal age has been associated with lower fertility and higher genetic risk for the offspring. One way to prevent these consequences is to freeze sperm at a young age. Social sperm freezing could be developed in a way similar to social oocyte freezing. The main difference between freezing oocytes and sperm is that social sperm freezing is much less focussed on fertility preservation and much more on avoiding increased genetic risk. Contrary to what some people seem to believe, sperm freezing is more complicated than it looks at first sight. This article considers three practical as
