Evolving Role of Molecular Imaging with (18)F-Sodium Fluoride PET as a Biomarker for Calcium Metabolism.

(18)F-sodium fluoride (NaF) as an imaging tracer portrays calcium metabolic activity either in the osseous structures or in soft tissue. Currently, clinical use of NaF-PET is confined to detecting metastasis to the bone, but this approach reveals indirect evidence for disease activity and will have limited use in the future in favor of more direct approaches that visualize cancer cells in the read marrow where they reside. This has proven to be the case with FDG-PET imaging in most cancers. However, a variety of studies support the application of NaF-PET to assess benign osseous diseases. In p

Effect of sodium fluoride and stannous chloride associated with Nd:YAG laser irradiation on the progression of enamel erosion.

This study evaluated the progression of enamel erosion after treatment with gels containing sodium fluoride (NaF; 9047 ppm F) and stannous chloride (SnCl2; 3000 ppm Sn), associated or not with Nd:YAG laser irradiation. Sixty enamel specimens were prepared from bovine incisors and protected by a tape, leaving an exposed surface area of 4 × 1 mm. The specimens were immersed in 1 % citric acid (pH = 2.3) for 10 min to create an initial erosion lesion. After, they were randomly divided into six groups: (C) control: gel without active ingredient; (F): NaF gel; (F + Sn): NaF + SnCl2 gel; (laser): Nd

Effects of single exposure of sodium fluoride on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in salivary glands of rats.

Many studies suggest that fluoride exposure can inhibit the activity of various enzymes and can generate free radicals, which interfere with antioxidant defence mechanisms in living systems. To further the understanding of this issue, this present study examined the effects of low-dose fluoride treatment on the activity of enzymatic antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as the levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in the parotid (PA) and submandibular (SM) salivary glands of rats. Rats were injected with a single dose of sodium fluoride (NaF) (15 mg F(-)/kg b.w.) then

Anti-hypertensive effect of enriched white melon seed protein concentrate biscuit on sodium fluoride exposed rats.

BACKGROUND: Sodium fluoride (NaF) is a daily necessity consumed as the major ingredient of fluorinated drinking water, milk, salts, mouthwashes, toothpaste, and dentistry medications. However, the use of NaF products has also been associated with increased fluoride anion distribution in the body, leading to hypertension. AIM: This study evaluated the antihypertensive effect of sweet orange peels-enriched white melon seed protein concentrate (WSP) biscuit meal in eight-week-old albino rats exposed to NaF for 14 days. METHODS: Forty-two (42) male Wistar albino rats were assigned at random into

Hesperidin Attenuates Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, Apoptosis, and Cardiac Dysfunction in Sodium Fluoride-Induced Cardiotoxicity in Rats.

Excessive fluoride intake has been reported to cause toxicities to brain, thyroid, kidney, liver and testis tissues. Hesperidin (HSP) is an antioxidant that possesses anti-allergenic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Presently, the studies focusing on the toxic effects of sodium fluoride (NaF) on heart tissue at biochemical and molecular level are limited. This study was designed to evaluate the ameliorative effects of HSP on toxicity of NaF on the heart of rats in vivo by observing the alterations in oxidative injury markers (MDA, SOD, CAT, GPX and GSH), pro-i

Global quantification of pulmonary artery atherosclerosis using 18F-sodium fluoride PET/CT in at-risk subjects.

The goal of this study was to assess pulmonary artery calcification in healthy controls and subjects with suspicion of stable angina pectoris through the usage of quantitative 18F-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography/computed tomography (NaF-PET/CT). We hypothesized that these 'at-risk subjects' would demonstrate increase pulmonary artery NaF uptake compared to healthy controls. Retrospectively, 15 healthy controls were compared to 15 at-risk subjects, all of whom underwent full-body NaF-PET/CT scans. The healthy controls and at-risk patients were all randomly sampled from larger datas

An interproximal model to determine the erosion-protective effect of calcium silicate, sodium phosphate, fluoride formulations.

OBJECTIVES: Previous work has shown the effectiveness of a newly developed interproximal model to differentiate between the amount of remineralization caused by toothpastes used with or without a dual-phase gel treatment system containing calcium silicate, sodium phosphate salts and fluoride to repair acid-softened enamel. The aim of this study was to utilize the same interproximal model to identify how effective calcium silicate phosphate toothpastes are at reducing surface softening in the early stages of erosion. The model was also used to identify the effect of increasing the frequency of

Sodium fluoride induces apoptosis in the kidney of rats through caspase-mediated pathways and DNA damage.

Long-term excessive sodium fluoride (NaF) intake can cause many bone diseases and nonskeletal fluorosis. The kidneys are the primary organs involved in the excretion and retention of NaF. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of NaF treatment on renal cell apoptosis, DNA damage, and the protein expression levels of cytosolic cytochrome C (Cyt C) and cleaved caspases 9, 8, and 3 in vivo. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided randomly into four groups (control, low fluoride, medium fluoride, and high fluoride) and administered 0, 50, 100, and 200 mg/L of NaF, respective

Three-year effectiveness of intravenous pamidronate versus pamidronate plus slow-release sodium fluoride for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

All currently available and approved therapies for osteoporosis inhibit bone resorption. But, despite their great value, antiresorptive agents are generally not associated with dramatic increases in bone mass. In light of these data, the aim of our prospective, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial, with a 3-year follow up, was to examine the effects of cyclic intravenous pamidronate and fluoride in combination, versus pamidronate alone, on bone mineral density (BMD) at vertebral and femoral levels, biochemical markers of bone turnover, IGF-1 serum levels, and safety and tolerability i

Reflection ultrasound velocities and histomorphometric and connectivity analyses: correlations and effect of slow-release sodium fluoride.

To better understand how structural and functional bone properties contribute to the changes in bone biomechanical properties revealed by ultrasound critical angle reflectometry (UCR) analysis, we measured both UCR velocities and histomorphometric properties in bone biopsy specimens from 33 osteoporotic patients before and following intermittent slow-release sodium fluoride (SRNaF) and continuous calcium citrate administration. Mean skeletal fluoride exposure was 17 months, and mean skeletal fluoride content was 0.203 +/- 0.088 SD% bone ash. Intermittent SRNaF and continuous calcium citrate pr

Addition of Sodium Fluoride to an Ionic Liquid Innovative System in the Reused Pretreatment to Enhance Cellulose Separation.

Eco-friendly ionic liquids (ILs) are widely used in lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. With their rather high cost, ILs must be reused in pretreatment processes. By pretreating with reused [BMIM]BF4:DMSO: NaF and [BMIM]BF4:DMSO for 22 rounds, the residual solid lignin contents of raw corn cobs samples are 6.94% ± 0.11% and 11.87% ± 0.22%, respectively, compared with 19.19% ± 0.41% in raw corn cobs, demonstrating the superior delignification performance of [BMIM]BF4:DMSO: NaF. Moreover, the residual lignin content remained consistently low throughout the reuse cycles for [BMIM]BF4:DMSO: NaF,

Effect of a sodium fluoride rinse on the composition of early oral biofilms formed in situ on enamel and dentine.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries results from dysbiotic shifts in the microbial community, so modulating biofilm composition represents a valid preventive strategy. The aim of this double-blind randomized crossover in situ study was to investigate how a fluoride rinse can modify the composition of the early oral biofilm formed on enamel and dentine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve volunteers wore mandibular appliances containing 3 enamel and 3 dentine specimens for 1 min, to allow basal pellicle formation, then rinsed (1 min) with a NaF solution (500 ppm F⁻) or deionized water (DW) and kept the applia

The effect of stannous and sodium fluoride on coronal caries, root caries and bone loss in rice rats.

Sixty rice rats (Oryzomys palustris) were divided by littermate into 3 groups of 20 each. The 3 groups received either SnF2 (1000 parts/10(6) F), NaF (1000 parts/10(6] or double-distilled water (control). Test solutions were topically applied to molar teeth, twice daily, for 7 days. All rats were also provided with double-distilled drinking water and diet 2000 ad libitum. Experiments ended after 9 weeks. Alveolar bone loss, root and coronal caries were recorded and scored. SnF2 significantly reduced bone loss (p less than 0.05), but NaF did not. Root caries was significantly different in all 3

[Histochemical and morphometric study of the changes induced by the absorption of sodium fluoride on the submaxillary and sublingual glands in the rat].

Three groups of Osborn Mendel rats received for two weeks either drinking water without addition of fluorides (control rats) or drinking water containing respectively 50 and 100 ppm of sodium fluoride. The histochemical study of the submaxillary and sublingual glands showed a very strong decrease in the polysaccharide and protein stainings in the 100 ppm group, whereas the 50 ppm group showed similar reactions to the control group. The morphometric study showed a strong decrease of the acinar and canalicular surfaces mainly in the submandibular gland. Thus the absorption of high doses of sodiu
