Lipofibromatosis is a relatively rare pediatric neoplasm, which usually manifests as an ill-defined soft tissue mass involving the upper and lower distal extremities, the trunk, and, less frequently, the head. To date, no cytogenetic abnormalities have been reported in this uncommon neoplasm. We present a case of lipofibromatosis featuring a three-way t(4;9;6) translocation in a 5-year-old boy.

A hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is an uncommon soft-tissue neoplasm that may arise in many body sites. The cytologic features of fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) of HPCs have only rarely been described in the literature. We examined FNAs of malignant HPCs from the head and neck region (three) and the retroperitoneum (one) in four adults (aged 38 to 83 years). All four FNAs yielded cellular specimens that consisted of uninuclear tumor cells with high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratios. The cytomorphological spectrum included nuclei that were oval to elongate and had very finely granular, evenly distributed chro

Many soft tissue sarcomas have chromosomal translocations with resultant formation of new fusion genes. Among the genes that can be rearranged, the EWSR1 gene has been identified as a partner in a wide variety of clinically and pathologically diverse sarcomas as well as some non-mesenchymal tumours. The former include Ewing sarcoma and similar (Ewing-like) small round cell sarcomas, desmoplastic small round cell tumour, myxoid liposarcoma, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma, clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue and clear cell sarcoma-like tumours of the gastroin

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a neoplasm originating mainly from vessels and has a mild proclivity for malignancy. This neoplasm mainly involves somatic soft tissue and retroperitoneum. Histological findings include a nodular arrangement of oval-to-spindle cells containing pale cytoplasm. Vascular spaces are in the form of slit-like channels in which red blood cells are evident. Here, we report the case of a two-year-old male who presented with Erb's palsy and a mass lesion in the right humerus. Tissue biopsy features were compatible with KHE.

Pleomorphic sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of mesenchymal neoplasms with widely varied clinical behavior but overlapping histologic appearances. The following guidelines are helpful when approaching the diagnosis of a pleomorphic sarcoma. (1) Be aware of the relative incidence of the various sarcoma types: several pleomorphic sarcomas are relatively common (e.g., dedifferentiated liposarcoma and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma), whereas others are exceptionally rare. (2) Pay attention to anatomic location: some pleomorphic sarcomas have a predilection for somatic soft tissues, especia

PURPOSE: Symptomatic peripheral vascular lesions in adults are often clinically diagnosed as benign vascular anomalies and may receive MRI/MRA for pre-treatment vascular mapping. Malignant neoplasms are difficult to distinguish from benign vascular anomalies on MRI/MRA. This study was performed to determine if there are imaging signs that can distinguish malignancies from benign vascular anomalies in adults imaged with MRI/MRA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A radiology database was retrospectively searched for ISSVA classification terms in MRI/MRA reports from 1/1/2002-1/1/2019. Adult patients (n =

In this review, we illustrate the computed tomographic features of thoracoabdominal soft-tissue abnormalities, which may be easily overlooked and often can provide important information regarding systemic processes. Examples include necrotizing fasciitis, heterotopic ossification, fat necrosis, benign and malignant neoplasms, endometriosis, and collagen vascular disease as well as systemic and congenital pathology.

Perivascular neoplasms comprise traditionally glomus tumor and hemangiopericytoma (HPC). Whereas glomus tumor represents a well-defined entity, the existence of HPC as a separate entity has been questioned because a number of neoplasms of different lines of differentiation are characterized by a HPC-like vascular growth pattern. Myopericytoma represents a recently delineated entity showing a HPC-like vascular pattern. A large series of myopericytoma of skin and soft tissues has been analyzed to further characterize the clinicopathologic spectrum of this entity. Fifty-four cases of myopericytom

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are a unique group of mesenchymal neoplasms of fibroblastic or myofibroblastic origin and are extremely rare in the oral cavity. The present study reported two additional cases of SFTs in the soft palate, along with the computed tomography characteristics, which demonstrated well-circumscribed soft tissue lesions with marked and homogenous enhancement. Following wide resection, one of the cases showed certain malignant pathological characteristics, including infiltration of mucinous gland, hypercellularity, nuclear atypia and weak positive staining for S-100. BACKGROUND: While the list of fusion-driven soft tissue neoplasms is expanding rapidly, their importance among cutaneous and superficial mesenchymal and adnexal neoplasms remains poorly understood. This challenge is especially evident in cases with ambiguous histopathology that are difficult to classify based on morphology.
AIMS: Our goal was to investigate the benefits of next-generation sequencing in diagnosing complex cutaneous neoplasms.
MATERIALS & METHODS: Departmental archives were searched for fusion-driven cutaneous neoplasms. Slides were retrieved and clinical information including

AIMS: Recurrent alterations involving receptor tyrosine or cytoplasmic kinase genes have been described in soft-tissue neoplasms such as infantile fibrosarcoma (IFS) and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT). Recent trials and regulatory approvals for targeted inhibitors against the kinase domains of these oncoproteins have allowed for increased use of targeted therapies. We aimed to characterize the histologic features of paediatric mesenchymal neoplasms with kinase alterations treated with targeted inhibitors.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight patients with tyrosine kinase-altered mesenchymal

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms constituting less than 2% of all soft tissue tumors. They typically originate in the thoracic cavity, mainly in the pleura, but can also occur in other various sites such as lung parenchyma, pericardium, and bronchus. In this study, a 49-year-old non-smoking female with a history of allergies presented to our pulmonary clinic with a chronic cough. An explorative bronchoscopy revealed an intrabronchial mass in the left superior bronchi, and a 68 Ga-DOTATOC positron emission computed tomography suggested a carcinoid tumor. Subsequent

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms that comprise <2 % of all soft tissue tumors. They are a diagnostically challenging group of neoplasms that can occur essentially anywhere. Molecular or genetic testing of soft tissue tumors will increasingly add to the foundation of distinctive histologic features, as accurate diagnosis is critical for appropriate treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for a left breast mass. Ultrasonography showed an oval hypoechoic mass with partially obscured boundaries. Surgical specime

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare spindle cell neoplasms, predominantly benign, comprising less than 2% of all soft tissue masses. In rare cases, SFTs can lead to Doege-Potter syndrome, a paraneoplastic condition characterised by hypoglycaemia due to elevated levels of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II). Patients typically present with symptomatic hypoglycaemia related to this hormonal dysregulation. We report the case of a 70-year-old man who presented with weight loss, cough, fatigue, tingling, and episodes of confusion associated with recurrent hypoglycaemia. Chest radiography re

INTRODUCTION: In June 2019, the World Health Organization Reporting System for Soft Tissue Cytopathology (WHORSSTC) was proposed at the European Congress of Cytology in Malmö, Sweden, for reporting soft tissue cytology. In this retrospective review, we evaluate the diagnostic categories of the proposed WHORSSTC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five hundred ninety-two fine needle aspiration cytology and touch preparation specimens from core needle biopsies from musculoskeletal lesions were identified (2015-2021), of which 62 cases (10%) had an associated surgical resection. Of these cases, 15 cases wit

RATIONALE: Pyelonephric giant cell tumor of soft tissue represents an exceptionally uncommon neoplasm of the urinary tract with limited malignant potential. It typically follows a benign clinical trajectory, with distant metastases occurring infrequently; reports of aggressive disease culminating in lethal multiorgan dissemination are exceedingly rare. The present case seeks to augment the clinical dataset and elucidate the features of its malignant transformation.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 72-year-old male presented with a 3-day history of persistent right-sided low back pain, without fever, gross

INTRODUCTION: Low-grade myxofibrosarcoma (LGMFS) is a neoplasm of soft tissues. According to the World Health Organization, LGMFS is a malignant myofibroblastic tumor arising from deep soft tissues with potential for recurrence and late metastatic spread. The incidence estimates are 0.18/million, accounting for 0.6% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. It can directly invade the bone and metastasize to bone; however, primary osseous low-grade myxofibrosarcoma is a rare entity. Thus, recognizing atypical presentations of uncommon neoplasms are a pertinent skill for the radiologist due to significant im

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) accounts for less than 1 % of all soft tissue sarcomas. ASPS presents a poor prognosis and develops frequent metastases, especially in the lungs, brain and bones. Current therapies, such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, are not fully effective and other alternative treatments are currently being studied. ASPS is predominantly found in the deep soft tissues of the lower extremities. To our knowledge, only thirteen primary intraosseous ASPS have been reported in the literature. In this study, we report two new cases of this exceedingly rare entity. Bot
