Prioritization of organic contaminants in coal mine soils based on a proposed priority organic pollutant scoring system with multi-criterion weighting.

The accumulation and diversity of organic pollutants (OPs) in soil underscore the urgent need for a systematic prioritization method. This study developed a priority organic pollutant scoring system (POPSS) and conducted prioritization of OPs in coal mine soil. The POPSS utilized a weighted integrated scoring system, considering four aspects covering concentration, toxicity, environmental behavior and management feasibility. Sixty-three (63) classes of potential OPs were listed as potential OPs list, based on government documents, investigation reports, and other materials. The OPs were then p

Bioaccumulation and transferreing for impacts on Cd and Pb by aphid consumption of the broad bean, Vicia faba L, in soil heavy metal pollution.

Heavy metal pollution threatens human and ecological health. Heavy metals can exist in the soil for a long time and migrate to organisms along the food chain. However, only a few studies have investigated the effects of a single stress on broad beans. Here, we aimed to characterize Cd and Pb bioaccumulation, at varying concentrations, in the broad bean, Vicia faba L. We also determined how the bioaccumulated metals are impacted by aphids that consume the plant. No significant difference was noted in the germination rates of broad beans at the early stage of planting (after 8 days), but eventua

The Effects of Heavy Metal Pollution on Soil Nitrogen Transformation and Rice Volatile Organic Compounds under Different Water Management Practices.

One of the most concerning global environmental issues is the pollution of agricultural soils by heavy metals (HMs), especially cadmium, which not only affects human health through Cd-containing foods but also impacts the quality of rice. The soil's nitrification and denitrification processes, coupled with the release of volatile organic compounds by plants, raise substantial concerns. In this review, we summarize the recent literature related to the deleterious effects of Cd on both soil processes related to the N cycle and rice quality, particularly aroma, in different water management pract

Soil cadmium pollution elicits sex-specific plant volatile emissions in response to insect herbivory in eastern cottonwood Populus deltoides.

Soil heavy metal pollution is a major abiotic stressor frequently encountered by plants in conjunction with other biotic stresses like insect herbivory. Yet, it remains largely unexplored how soil metal pollution and insect herbivory act together to influence emissions of plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which mediate multiple ecological functions and play crucial roles in atmospheric processes. Here, we assessed the individual and combined effects of soil cadium (Cd) pollution and insect herbivory by Clostera anachoreta on VOC emissions from the seedlings of eastern cottonwood Populus

Valorization of steelmaking slag and coal fly ash as amendments in combination with Betula pubescens for the remediation of a highly As- and Hg-polluted mining soil.

Soil pollution by As and Hg is a pressing environmental issue given their persistence. The intricate removal processes and subsequent accumulation of these elements in soil adversely impact plant growth and pose risks to other organisms in the food chain and to underground aquifers. Here we assessed the effectiveness of non-toxic industrial byproducts, namely coal fly ash and steelmaking slag, as soil amendments, both independently and in conjunction with an organic fertilizer. This approach was coupled with a phytoremediation technique involving Betula pubescens to tackle soil highly contamin

Soil cadmium pollution facilitated the invasion of alligator weed through enhanced herbivore resistance and competitive ability over a congeneric species.

A number of invasive plant species, such as Alternanthera philoxeroides, have been documented to be able to accumulate trace metal elements in their tissues. Since metal accumulation in plants can serve as a defence against herbivores, we hypothesized that metal pollution will increase herbivore resistance of metal-accumulating invasive plant species and such a benefit will grant them a competitive advantage over local co-occurring plants. In this study, we compared the differences in plant growth and herbivore feeding preference between A. philoxeroides and its native congener Alternanthera s

[Accumulation and Pollution Risks of Heavy Metals in Soils and Agricultural Products from a Typical Black Shale Region with High Geological Background].

Soil polluted by heavy metals (HMs) is an important environmental issue in China, and regional geological background is a vital factor that influences the enrichment of HMs in soils. Previous studies have shown that soils derived from black shales are commonly enriched in HMs and present high potential eco-environmental risks. However, few studies have investigated the HMs in different agricultural products, which inhibit the safe use of land and safe production of food crops in black shale regions. This study investigated the concentrations, pollution risks, and speciation of HMs in soils and

Chromium(VI) formation via heating of Cr(III)-Fe(III)-(oxy)hydroxides: A pathway for fire-induced soil pollution.

Mixed Cr(III)-Fe(III) (oxy)hydroxides are important Cr-bearing phases in natural, unpolluted soil. Fires frequently affect large areas of land around the world, causing the temporary development of elevated soil temperatures. This study examines the hypothesis that heating Cr(III)-Fe(III) (oxy)hydroxides at temperatures which occur in surface soils during fires can drive rapid oxidation of Cr(III) to hazardous Cr(VI). To test this, poorly-ordered Cr(III)x-Fe(III)1-x (oxy)hydroxides, with x spanning 0.1 to 0.9, were heated at up to 800 °C for 2 h. Heating at 400-800 °C produced a highly crystal

Promoting the productivity and quality of brinjal aligned with heavy metals immobilization in a wastewater irrigated heavy metal polluted soil with biochar and chitosan.

Depleting aquifers, lack of planning and low socioeconomic status of Pakistani farmers have led them to use wastewater (WW) for irrigating their crops causing food contamination with heavy metals and ultimately negative effects on human health. This study evaluates the effects of chitosan (CH) and biochar (BC) on growth and nutritional quality of brinjal plant together with in situ immobilization of heavy metals in a soil polluted with heavy metals due to irrigation with wastewater (SPHIW) and further irrigated with the same WW. Both CH and BC were applied at three different rates i.e. low rat

"In situ" phytostabilisation of heavy metal polluted soils using Lupinus luteus inoculated with metal resistant plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria.

The aim of this work is the evaluation of metal phytostabilisation potential of Lupinus luteus inoculated with Bradyrhizobium sp. 750 and heavy metal resistant PGPRs (plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria), for in situ reclamation of multi-metal contaminated soil after a mine spill. Yellow lupines accumulated heavy metals mainly in roots (Cu, Cd and especially Pb were poorly translocated to shoots). This indicates a potential use of this plant in metal phytostabilisation. Furthermore, As accumulation was undetectable. On the other hand, zinc accumulation was 10-100 times higher than all other m

nZVI-ryegrass integrated system for risk mitigation of chromium-PFAS co-contaminated soil: Pollutant immobilization and microbial niche regulation.

To address the high mobility, environmental risks, and challenges in synergistically managing co-contamination of chromium (Cr) and per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in electroplating site soils, a cooperative strategy using nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and ryegrass was proposed and evaluated under laboratory-scale conditions. Combined application of 100 μg/g nZVI and ryegrass simultaneously suppressed the migration of both pollutants, reducing PFAS and total Cr leaching by 75.8% and 91.2%, respectively. The acid-extractable Cr fraction decreased from ∼35-4%, while the stable Cr frac

Unlocking bioenergy potential in heavy metal polluted soils: synergistic advanced solid-state fermentation and combustion for valorization of sweet sorghum.

BACKGROUND: A novel co-disposal strategy integrating advanced solid-state fermentation (ASSF) and combustion was proposed to address the dual challenges of safe utilization and value-added conversion of heavy metal-enriched sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) biomass from phytoremediation. RESULTS: Controlled field experiments demonstrated that Cd, Pb, and Cu concentrations in sweet sorghum organs increased significantly with elevated soil metal levels, following distinct accumulation patterns: roots > stems > leaves > grains for Cd and Cu, versus roots > leaves > stems > grains for P

Effects of biochar and compost on microbial community assembly and metabolic processes in glyphosate, imidacloprid and pyraclostrobin polluted soil under freezethaw cycles.

Biochar and organic compost are widely used in agricultural soil remediation as soil immobilization agents. However, the effects of biochar and compost on microbial community assembly processes in polluted soil under freezingthawing need to be further clarified. Therefore, a freezethaw cycle experiment was conducted with glyphosate (herbicide), imidacloprid (insecticide) and pyraclostrobin (fungicide) polluted to understand the effect of biochar and compost on microbial community assembly and metabolic behavior. We found that biochar and compost could significantly promote the degradation of g

The impact of Cu-polluted and organic soil on the fibrous plant; insights into plant growth promotion, antioxidant defences system, and oxidative stress.

Copper (Cu) is an abundant essential micronutrient element in various rocks and minerals and is required for a variety of metabolic processes in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. However, excess Cu can disturb normal development by adversely affecting biochemical reactions and physiological processes in plants. However, organic soil is rich in micronutrients and can assist plants to tolerate toxicity by promoting growth and biomass. This study explored the potential of organic and Cu-contaminated soil on fibrous jute (Corchorus capsularis ). Plants were grown in the organic soil, natural soil (

A coupled multivariate statistics, geostatistical and machine-learning approach to address soil pollution in a prototypical Hg-mining site in a natural reserve.

The impact of mining activities on the environment is vast. In this regard, many mines were operating well before the introduction of environmental law. This is particularly true of cinnabar mines, whose activity has declined for decades due to growing public concern regarding Hg high toxicity. Here we present the exemplary case study of an abandoned Hg mine located in the Somiedo Natural Reserve (Spain). Until its closure in the 1970s, this mine operated under no environmental regulations, its tailings dumped in two spoil heaps, one of them located uphill and the other in the surroundings of

Assessment of heavy metal pollution in wetland soils from the young and old reclaimed regions in the Pearl River Estuary, South China.

Soils were sampled in three types of wetlands from the young (A) and old (B) reclaimed regions of the Pearl River Estuary. They were analyzed for total concentrations of heavy metals to investigate their distributions and pollution levels in both regions. Results showed that most heavy metals in ditch and riparian wetlands did not significantly differ from those in reclaimed wetlands in A region, while significantly lower for Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in reclaimed wetlands in B region, suggesting higher effects of long-term reclamation. Iron, Cr and Cu were identified as metal pollutants of primary c
