Heart sound segmentation of pediatric auscultations using wavelet analysis.

Auscultation is widely applied in clinical activity, nonetheless sound interpretation is dependent on clinician training and experience. Heart sound features such as spatial loudness, relative amplitude, murmurs, and localization of each component may be indicative of pathology. In this study we propose a segmentation algorithm to extract heart sound components (S1 and S2) based on it's time and frequency characteristics. This algorithm takes advantage of the knowledge of the heart cycle times (systolic and diastolic periods) and of the spectral characteristics of each component, through wavel

An event-related potential investigation of the time-course of temporal ventriloquism.

Temporal ventriloquism refers to the phenomenon that a sound presented in close temporal proximity of a visual stimulus attracts its perceived temporal occurrence. Here, we investigate the time-course of the neuronal processes underlying temporal ventriloquism, using event-related brain potentials. To measure shifts in perceived temporal visual occurrence, we used a paradigm in which a sound modulates the magnitude of a visual illusion called the flash-lag effect. A sound presented before the flash reduced both the size of the flash-lag effect and the amplitude of visual N1 compared with when

Motor Influence in Developing Auditory Spatial Cognition in Hemiplegic Children with and without Visual Field Disorder.

Spatial representation is a crucial skill for everyday interaction with the environment. Different factors seem to influence spatial perception, such as body movements and vision. However, it is still unknown if motor impairment affects the building of simple spatial perception. To investigate this point, we tested hemiplegic children with (HV) and without visual field (H) disorders in an auditory and visual-spatial localization and pitch discrimination task. Fifteen hemiplegic children (nine H and six HV) and twenty with typical development took part in the experiment. The tasks consisted in

Tracking of a "moving" fused auditory image under conditions that elicit the precedence effect.

Pursuit auditory tracking of a fused auditory image (FAI), based on stimulus conditions known to elicit the precedence effect phenomenon in sound localization, was investigated in 36 normal subjects and in a small group of subjects with known neuropathology. Movement of the FAI was simulated by incrementally varying the delay between two clicks presented, one each, from two loudspeakers placed on opposite sides of the listener. The group of normal listeners tracked the movement of the FAI without difficulty and with great accuracy; the perceived location of the FAI varied linearly with the int

Inferior colliculus syndrome: Clinical magnetic resonance microscopy anatomic analysis on a 7 T system.

We performed detailed structural analysis of a case of a unilateral lesion of the inferior colliculus using magnetic resonance microscopy on a 7 T system. A 36-year-old right-handed man had an intracerebral hemorrhage circumscribed to the right inferior colliculus. Following recovery from the acute phase, he had only residual left ear tinnitus and left trochlear palsy and no hearing loss. Microscopic imaging analysis on a 7 T magnetic resonance imaging system demonstrated a chronic lesion confined primarily to the right central nucleus of the inferior colliculus. Sound localization was signifi

Hemispheric asymmetries in the auditory cortex reflect discriminative responses to temporal details or summary statistics of stationary sounds.

The processing of stationary sounds relies on both local features and compact representations. As local information is compressed into summary statistics, abstract representations emerge. Whether the brain is endowed with distinct neural architectures predisposed to such computations is unknown. In this magnetoencephalography (MEG) study, we employed a validated protocol to localize cortical correlates of local and summary auditory representations, exposing participants to sequences embedding triplets of synthetic sound textures systematically varying for either local details or summary statis

The Effect of Head Movements on Front-Back Discrimination and Sound Externalization With Hearing Aids.

Head movements are intuitive, often spontaneous, behaviours that help us localize the origin of a sound source. In normal-hearing listeners, head movements during sound presentation are known to improve localization performance in both horizontal and vertical dimensions, as well as front-back discrimination. The perceived externalization of sound sources also improves with head motion. Hearing-aid users, especially users with behind-the-ear microphone positioning, exhibit diminished front-back localization abilities as well as degraded externalization under static conditions. The extent to whi

Effect of bilateral auditory cortex lesions on absolute thresholds in Japanese macaques.

1. The behavioral audiograms of four Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) were assessed before and after receiving two-stage bilateral lesions of auditory cortex. Thresholds were assessed for each ear with the use of insertion earphones. 2. The bilateral lesions resulted in a large initial hearing loss followed by partial recovery that left the animals with a permanent hearing loss in both ears. 3. The initial hearing loss consisted of a total insensitivity to sound in the ear contralateral to the second lesion with limited hearing in the other ear. However, the animal with the most complete les

Spatial Hearing as a Function of Presentation Level in Moderate-to-Severe Unilateral Conductive Hearing Loss.

HYPOTHESIS: Patients with moderate-to-severe unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL) can make use of binaural difference cues when stimuli are presented at a high enough intensity to provide audibility in the affected ear. BACKGROUND: Spatial hearing is essential for listening in complex environments and sound source localization. Patients with UCHL have decreased access to binaural difference cues, resulting in poorer spatial hearing abilities compared with listeners with normal hearing. METHODS: Twelve patients with moderate-to-severe UCHL, most due to atresia (83.3%), and 12 age-matched

Binaural Processing Deficits Due to Synaptopathy and Myelin Defects.

Hidden hearing loss (HHL) is a deficit in auditory perception and speech intelligibility that occurs despite normal audiometric thresholds and results from noise exposure, aging, or myelin defects. While mechanisms causing perceptual deficits in HHL patients are still unknown, results from animal models indicate a role for peripheral auditory neuropathies in HHL. In humans, sound localization is particularly important for comprehending speech, especially in noisy environments, and its disruption may contribute to HHL. In this study, we hypothesized that neuropathies of cochlear spiral ganglion

Lateralization of virtual sound sources with a binaural cochlear-implant sound coding strategy inspired by the medial olivocochlear reflex.

Many users of bilateral cochlear implants (BiCIs) localize sound sources less accurately than do people with normal hearing. This may be partly due to using two independently functioning CIs with fixed compression, which distorts and/or reduces interaural level differences (ILDs). Here, we investigate the potential benefits of using binaurally coupled, dynamic compression inspired by the medial olivocochlear reflex; an approach termed "the MOC strategy" (Lopez-Poveda et al., 2016, Ear Hear 37:e138-e148). Twelve BiCI users were asked to localize wideband (125-6000 Hz) noise tokens in a virtual

Electrophysiological correlates of cocktail-party listening.

Detecting, localizing, and selectively attending to a particular sound source of interest in complex auditory scenes composed of multiple competing sources is a remarkable capacity of the human auditory system. The neural basis of this so-called "cocktail-party effect" has remained largely unknown. Here, we studied the cortical network engaged in solving the "cocktail-party" problem, using event-related potentials (ERPs) in combination with two tasks demanding horizontal localization of a naturalistic target sound presented either in silence or in the presence of multiple competing sound sourc

Is the cochlear implant a successful long-term solution for single-sided deaf and asymmetric hearing-impaired patients?

PURPOSE: We investigated the long-term results of cochlear implant (CI) recipients with asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) or single-sided deafness (SSD). We focused on wearing behavior, audiometric hearing rehabilitation, and subjective benefits of the CI. CI is expected to improve audiological results, subjective hearing perception, and tinnitus burden. METHODS: Speech recognition in background noise and sound localization were assessed preoperatively and after at least six years of CI experience. Validated questionnaires determined the subjective benefit of CI use and the subjective evaluation

Locating stridor caused by tumor compression by using a multichannel electronic stethoscope: a case report.

A 67-year-old male patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was admitted to a hospital in northern Taiwan for progressive dyspnea and productive cough with an enlarged left upper lobe tumor (5.3 × 6.8 × 3.9 cm3). Previous chest auscultation on outpatient visits had yielded diffuse wheezes. A localized stridor (fundamental frequency of 125 Hz) was captured using a multichannel electronic stethoscope comprising four microelectromechanical system microphones. An energy-based localization algorithm was used to successfully locate the sound source of the stridor caused by tumor compressio

Development of ear asymmetry in the American barn owl (Tyto furcata pratincola).

Owls are known for their nocturnal hunting capability. Many owl species are able to localize prey in complete darkness just by hearing. Sound localization of strictly nocturnal owls is improved by asymmetrically arranged outer ears. According to Norberg (1977), who worked with adult owls, asymmetrical ears evolved at least four times independently among owls. What is unknown so far is how the ear asymmetry develops in the embryo. Here we examine the embryonic development of ear asymmetry in the American barn owl (Tyto furcata pratincola) in the frame of the 42 stages suggested by Köppl et al.
