Induction of cognitive impairment by scopolamine and noncholinergic agents in rhesus monkeys.

In primates, treatment with scopolamine impairs performance of a spatial delayed response task in a way which mimics deficits seen spontaneously in aged primates and demented patients. Despite their efficacy in reversing scopolamine induced disruption, the effects of cholinergic agonists on cognition in aged primates and dements are unimpressive, suggesting that other neurotransmitter systems are also involved in this type of deficit. We have induced a scopolamine-like impairment of spatial delayed response performance in rhesus monkeys using phencyclidine (0.1-0.2 mg/kg i.m.), lorazepam (0.4-

Shifting attentional priorities: control of spatial attention through hemispheric competition.

Regions of frontal and posterior parietal cortex are known to control the allocation of spatial attention across the visual field. However, the neural mechanisms underlying attentional control in the intact human brain remain unclear, with some studies supporting a hemispatial theory emphasizing a dominant function of the right hemisphere and others supporting an interhemispheric competition theory. We previously found neural evidence to support the latter account, in which topographically organized frontoparietal areas each generate a spatial bias, or "attentional weight," toward the contrala

Behavioral states affect eye position tuning in the parietal cortex of macaques.

Posterior parietal neural populations compute flexible yet stable representations of spatial locations using eye position information, and plan effector movements across various goal-directed contexts. How space is represented during internally driven non-goal-directed behaviors and whether these spatial representations are affected by the different behavioral contexts and the underlying brain states remain understudied. We compared eye position signals in single neurons in macaque parietal cortex (area V6A) during constrained fixations toward visual targets with gaze activity during self-pace

Electrophysiological evidence that musical experience affects spatial auditory perception.

Musical experience is associated with enhanced auditory abilities, but it remains unclear how these benefits are expressed across different stages of spatial auditory processing. Therefore, we examined participants with and without musical experience using a spatial auditory oddball paradigm with multiple spatial deviations under both unattended and attended conditions. Behavioral performance, event-related potentials, and phase-locking value (PLV)-based functional connectivity were jointly analyzed to characterize spatial auditory processing at behavioral, local neural, and network levels. HARM-YOLO11n: A Lightweight Real-Time Object Detection Framework for Robust Classroom Behavior Monitoring.

Real-time classroom behavior monitoring is an important component of intelligent education systems, yet it remains challenging due to dense student layouts, frequent occlusions, and small-scale behavior targets. To address these challenges, this paper proposes Hierarchical Adaptive Re-parameterized Multi-scale YOLO11n (HARM-YOLO11n), a lightweight object detection framework based on YOLO11n for classroom behavior analysis. The proposed framework integrates structural re-parameterized feature enhancement (SRFE), a spatial-channel adaptive module (SCAM), position-adaptive multi-scale fusion (PAM

Contribution of the medial entorhinal cortex to performance on the Traveling Salesperson Problem in rats.

In order to successfully navigate through space, animals must rely on multiple cognitive processes, including orientation in space, memory of object locations, and navigational decisions based on that information. Although highly-controlled behavioral tasks are valuable for isolating and targeting specific processes, they risk producing a narrow understanding of complex behavior in natural contexts. The Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) is an optimization problem that can be used to study naturalistic foraging behaviors, in which subjects select routes between multiple baited targets. Foragi

Effect of a hallucinogenic serotonin 5-HT2A receptor agonist on visually guided, hippocampal-dependent spatial cognition in C57BL/6J mice.

By acting on serotonin 5-HT2A receptors (5-HT2A Rs), serotonergic psychedelic drugs induce perceptual and visual hallucinations by increasing neuronal excitability and altering visual-evoked neuronal responses. The present study was designed to examine whether the perceptual alterations induced by a serotonergic psychedelic drug would affect the integrity of hippocampal-dependent, visually guided spatial cognition. phenylalkylamine hallucinogen TCB-2 is a selective agonist of 5-HT2A Rs. Mice received TCB-2 (1.0 mg kg-1 , i.p.), and spatial behaviors and hippocampal electrophysiological respons

Psilocybin restores spatial memory but not fronto-hippocampal synchrony in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Fronto-hippocampal desynchronization is linked to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's-like pathology, but whether psilocybin can restore this dysfunction is unknown. METHODS: Male rats received intracerebroventricular streptozotocin (ICV-STZ) to induce neurotoxicity, followed by a single dose of psilocybin (2.5 mg/kg, the maximum tolerated dose). Spatial memory, recognition memory, spatial learning, anxiety-like behavior, and depressive-like behavior were assessed (Y-maze, novel object recognition, Barnes maze, elevated plus maze, forced swim test), alongside resting-state local fiel

Sexually dimorphic organization of open field behavior following moderate prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can produce deficits in a wide range of cognitive functions but is especially detrimental to behaviors requiring accurate spatial information processing. In open field environments, spatial behavior is organized such that animals establish "home bases" marked by long stops focused around one location. Progressions away from the home base are circuitous and slow, while progressions directed toward the home base are non-circuitous and fast. The impact of PAE on the organization of open field behavior has not been experimentally investigated. METHODS:

The role of risk tolerance in navigation strategy decisions.

Everyday situations require us to face a trade-off to inform our decisions: exploit known information or explore for new information. Although both have risks, empirical research has not shown whether individuals prefer exploring or exploiting across contexts. In the present study, we examined the explore-exploit trade-off as a theoretical framework across two broad domains: decision making and spatial navigation. In this registered report, we applied computational modeling to human behavior on a novel version of the Iowa gambling task to predict behavior on a spatial navigation task in which

Non-Contact Transspatial Regulatory Function of the Extracellular Matrix.

As a crucial biological material, the extracellular matrix (ECM) constitutes a major part of the extracellular microenvironment, offering both structural support and essential biological signals to surrounding cells. Research into ECM properties not only deepens our understanding of cellular behavior and metabolism but also opens new avenues for studying disease mechanisms and therapies. In this work, we report a previously unrecognized function of ECM by leveraging a three-dimensional spatial cavity structure. It is termed "Non-contact Transspatial Regulatory" (nCTR), referring to the ECM tha

Alternative brain organization after prenatal cerebral injury: convergent fMRI and cognitive data.

The current study presents both longitudinal behavioral data and functional activation data documenting the effects of early focal brain injury on the development of spatial analytic processing in two children, one with prenatal left hemisphere (LH) injury and one with right hemisphere (RH) injury. A substantial body of evidence has shown that adults and children with early, lateralized brain injury show evidence of spatial analytic deficits. LH injury compromises the ability to encode the parts of a spatial pattern, while RH injury impairs pattern integration. The two children described in th

Spatial Disorientation Under Dark Conditions Across Development in an Alzheimer's Disease Mouse Model.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with hippocampal neuropathology and cognitive impairments, including wandering behavior or becoming lost in a familiar environment. Wandering behavior is severe and manifests early in life for people with specific genetic mutations. Genetic mouse models of AD have been developed to characterize the onset and progression of behavioral deficits that represent human behaviors, such as wandering, to test the efficacy of therapeutics. It is not clear if current assessments of mouse models capture the onset of AD or a snapshot of its progression. Sequential ana

Defensive responses to predator threat in the rat and mouse.

Defensive responses include an array of specific behaviors, including flight, freezing, risk assessment, and defensive threat/attack, that are elicited by unconditioned threat stimuli such as predators or predator odors. Some individual defensive behaviors are selectively responsive to drugs effective against generalized anxiety disorder or panic, providing a rationale for their use in investigation of compounds that may be useful in treating these disorders. In addition, defensive behaviors toward predators and some predator odors show rapid conditioning to contextual stimuli, whereas other p

Oculographic analysis of word reading in hemispatial neglect.

Neglect dyslexia is a disorder in which individuals misread text appearing on the contralateral side of space following an acquired lesion, usually to the right parietal lobe. This disorder is generally attributed to an impairment in representing spatial information. To determine whether the spatial representations underlying reading differ from those mediating other forms of visual behavior, we investigated the co-occurrence of neglect dyslexia with that of neglect, which manifests on tasks such as line bisection or line cancellation. We also examined the correlation between neglect dyslexia,

Xanthine-induced deficits in hippocampal behavior and abnormal expression of hemoglobin genes.

The prevalence of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety is high and often comorbid with other diseases. Chronic stress is a common risk factor for these disorders, but the mechanisms behind their development are not yet fully understood. Metabolomics has revealed a close association between purine and pyrimidine metabolism and depression and anxiety, with increased levels of serum xanthine observed in both humans and mice. Xanthine is known as purine metabolism, and this compound shows several biological activities, but the impact of xanthine on our brain function is still unclear. T

The Hole-Board Test in Mutant Mice.

First described by Boissier and Simon in (Ther Recreat J 17:1225-1232, 1962), the hole-board has become a recognized test of anxiety and spatial memory. Benzodiazepines acting at the GABAA-BZD site increase hole-pokes in rats and mice, indicating a loss in behavioral inhibition concordant with the behavior of mutant mice deficient in the GABA transporter. Hole-poking also depends on arousal mechanisms dependent on dopaminergic transmission, as indicated by drug and null mutant studies. In addition, the behavior is modified in natural and null mutants affecting the cerebellum as well as null mu

Spatial disease dynamics of free-living pathogens under pathogen predation.

The epidemiological dynamics of potentially free-living pathogens are often studied with respect to a specific pathogen species (e.g., cholera) and most studies concentrate only on host-pathogen interactions. Here we show that metacommunity-level interactions can alter conventional spatial disease dynamics. We introduce a pathogen eating consumer species and investigate a deterministic epidemiological model of two habitat patches, where both patches can be occupied by hosts, pathogens, and consumers of free-living pathogens. An isolated habitat patch shows periodic disease outbreaks in the hos
