Language abilities in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, reading disabilities, and normal controls.

Research has demonstrated a high prevalence of language impairments (LI) and reading disabilities (RD) in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Since RD is also associated with LI, it is unclear whether the language impairments are specific to ADHD or associated with comorbid RD. The language abilities of ADHD children with and without RD were investigated in a task requiring recall of a lengthy narrative, and in tests assessing knowledge of the semantic aspects of language. The study was conducted with 50 boys--14 ADHD, 14 ADHD + RD, 8 RD, and 14 normal controls, aged

Putative miRNAs for the diagnosis of dyslexia, dyspraxia, and specific language impairment.

Disorders of human communication abilities can be classified into speech and language disorders. Speech disorders (e.g., dyspraxia) affect the sound generation and sequencing, while language disorders (e.g., dyslexia and specific language impairment, or SLI) are deficits in the encoding and decoding of language according to its rules (reading, spelling, grammar). The diagnosis of such disorders is often complicated, especially when a patient presents more than one disorder at the same time. The present review focuses on these challenges. We have combined data available from the literature with

Relationships of Attention and Executive Functions to Oral Language, Reading, and Writing Skills and Systems in Middle Childhood and Early Adolescence.

Relationships between attention/executive functions and language learning were investigated in students in Grades 4 to 9 ( N = 88) with and without specific learning disabilities (SLDs) in multiword syntax in oral and written language (OWL LD), word reading and spelling (dyslexia), and subword letter writing (dysgraphia). Prior attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis was correlated only with impaired handwriting. Parental ratings of inattention, but not hyperactivity, correlated with measures of written language but not oral language. Sustaining switching attention correlated

[Characterization of the linguistic profile of a family with Perisylvian Syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Perisylvian syndrome refers to a variety of clinical manifestations associated to lesions in the perisylvian or opercular regions. Polymicrogyria is the most common structural malformation found. The syndrome may be inherited and the clinical spectrum includes subtle language disturbances on one end and more severe characteristics such as prominent pseudobulbar signs and refractory epilepsy on the other end. Other studies have already associated perisylvian polymicrogyria with developmental language disorders or specific language impairment. AIM: to describe the language deficits

Revisiting Dysarthria Treatment Across Languages: The Hybrid Approach.

PURPOSE: Ten years after Miller and Lowit's (2014) groundbreaking book providing a cross-linguistic perspective on motor speech disorders, we ask where we are regarding dysarthria treatment across languages in two specific populations: adults with Parkinson's disease (PD) and children with cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD: In this commentary, we consider preliminary evidence for both language-independent and language-specific approaches to treatment and propose a hybrid approach to speech treatment across languages, centered on the individual with dysarthria who speaks any given language. CONCLUS

Recommended Terminology for Substance Use Disorders in the Care of Children, Adolescents, Young Adults, and Families.

Pediatricians across the United States encounter infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and families affected by substance use disorders in their daily practice. For much of history, substance use has been viewed as a moral failing for which individuals themselves are to blame; however, as addiction became understood as a medical disorder, clinical terminology has shifted along with a growing awareness of harm of stigmatizing language in medicine. In issuing this policy statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) joins other large organizations in providing recommendations regar

Merely misunderstood? Receptive, expressive, and pragmatic language in young children with disruptive behavior disorders.

Children with disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) often seem to have poorer language skills compared to same-age peers; however, language as an early risk factor for DBD has received little empirical attention. The present study provides an empirical examination of associations between normal language variation and DBD by investigating receptive, expressive, and pragmatic language skills and preschool DBD symptoms. The sample consisted of 109 preschoolers ages 3 to 6 (M = 4.77 years, SD = 1.10, 59% boys; 73% with DBD, including oppositional defiant disorder [ODD] and attention-deficit/hyperac

Auditory perceptual grouping and attention in dyslexia.

Despite dyslexia affecting a large number of people, the mechanisms underlying the disorder remain undetermined. There are numerous theories about the origins of dyslexia. Many of these relate dyslexia to low-level, sensory temporal processing deficits. Another group of theories attributes dyslexia to language-specific impairments. Here, we show that dyslexics perform worse than controls on an auditory perceptual grouping task. The results show differences in performance between the groups that depend on sound frequency and not solely on parameters related to temporal processing. Performance o

Toward the Language Oscillogenome.

Language has been argued to arise, both ontogenetically and phylogenetically, from specific patterns of brain wiring. We argue that it can further be shown that core features of language processing emerge from particular phasal and cross-frequency coupling properties of neural oscillations; what has been referred to as the language 'oscillome.' It is expected that basic aspects of the language oscillome result from genetic guidance, what we will here call the language 'oscillogenome,' for which we will put forward a list of candidate genes. We have considered genes for altered brain rhythmicit

Determining the Linguistic Profile of Children With Rare Genetic Disorders.

PURPOSE: Language studies on populations with rare genetic disorders are limited. Hence, there is little data on commonly found or expected developmental linguistic traits and cognitive mechanisms that may be impaired. Based on the hypothesis that there is a close connection between language and cognition and the relevance of specific genetic changes in the development of each, our goal was to provide linguistic data on relationships with other executive functioning mechanisms. METHOD: This study assessed language skills, communicative behaviors, and executive functions in four children, aged

Using large language models for extracting and pre-annotating texts on mental health from noisy data in a low-resource language.

Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have opened new possibilities for developing conversational agents (CAs) in various subfields of mental healthcare. However, this progress is hindered by limited access to high-quality training data, often due to privacy concerns and high annotation costs for low-resource languages. A potential solution is to create human-AI annotation systems that utilize extensive public domain user-to-user and user-to-professional discussions on social media. These discussions, however, are extremely noisy, necessitating the adaptation of LLMs for fully au

Intervention Effects on Phonological Processing in Children With Developmental Speech and/or Language Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Studies With Group Design.

BACKGROUND: Challenges in phonological processing are prevalent in children with developmental speech and/or language disorders and are associated with their language acquisition and later reading skills. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis from the same project of studies with a group design on the effects of interventions on output phonology, found that oral language interventions have a positive effect on output phonology, specifically speech production accuracy. These interventions are expected to impact the phonological representational level as well and, thus, also affect phonol

Similarities and differences in psycho-educational assessments of adolescents with specific language impairments and specific learning disabilities: A challenging differential diagnosis.

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have been the subject of extensive research especially with respect to the connection between them. However, the manifestation of these disorders in adolescence has not been thoroughly investigated. The objective of the present study was to compare the intelligence scores and the reading, oral and written language skills of Greek adolescents with SLI and Greek adolescents with SLD, as assessed during their psycho-educational evaluation, in order to clear the path for diagnosis and intervention. 124 Greek adolescents di

Nonword Repetition Across Two Dialects of English: Effects of Specific Language Impairment and Nonmainstream Form Density.

Purpose Nonword repetition (NWR) has been proposed as a culturally and linguistically fair measure of children's language abilities that is useful for the identification of specific language impairment (SLI). However, Moyle, Heilmann, and Finneran (2014) suggested that the density of a child's nonmainstream forms also influences NWR in ways that could complicate its use. Using speakers of either African American English (AAE) or Southern White English (SWE), we asked if NWR performance differed in children with SLI and same dialect-speaking typically developing (TD) children and if nonmainstre

Mobile technologies for rehabilitation in non-specific spinal disorders: a systematic review of the efficacy and potential for implementation in low- and middle-income countries.

PURPOSE: The aim of this systematic review was primarily to identify the types of mHealth technologies for the rehabilitation of non-specific spinal disorders, second to evaluate their efficacy, and finally to determine their applicability in LMICs. METHODS: Three databases (Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science) were searched for randomized controlled trials and clinical trials from January 2012 until December 2022. Studies were found eligible when using mHealth technologies for the rehabilitation of non-specific spinal disorders. To evaluate efficacy, the primary outcome was pain intensity, an

7q31.2q31.31 deletion downstream of FOXP2 segregating in a family with speech and language disorder.

Chromosomal 7q31 deletions have been described in individuals with variable neurodevelopmental phenotypes including speech and language impairment. These copy number variants usually encompass FOXP2, haploinsufficiency of which represents a widely acknowledged cause for specific speech and language disorders. By chromosomal microarray analysis we identified a 4.7 Mb microdeletion at 7q31.2q31.31 downstream of FOXP2 in three family members presenting with variable speech, language and neurodevelopmental phenotypes. The index individual showed delayed speech development with impaired speech prod

A comparison of two dynamic assessment situations for detecting development language disorder in monolingual and bilingual children.

Bilingual children's language skills are strongly influenced by exposure to each of their languages, among other linguistic, environmental, and cognitive factors. In the speech and language therapy clinic, it is difficult to disentangle developmental language disorders from insufficient exposure. Dynamic assessment, which directly tests the learning potential of children, offers a promising solution for this dilemma. This study compares the clinical potential of two dynamic assessment situations, varying amount of adult mediation (autonomous computer game vs. interactive story reading with gra

Case identification in psychiatric epidemiology: a review.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric epidemiologic surveys since 1980 have relied heavily on a small number of survey diagnostic instruments for case ascertainment, which encode reports of respondents to highly structured interview questions delivered by interviewers without clinical training. Many validations of these survey diagnostic instruments have been carried out. OBJECTIVE: This paper reviews the success of the survey diagnostic instruments, for eight diagnostic categories, in validations with a psychiatrist examination as the gold standard. METHOD: Public databases were searched for potentially

Adults with language-learning disabilities: new challenges and changing perspectives.

As children and adolescents mature into adult life, their language-learning disabilities continue. Consequently, the view that language-learning disabilities are limited to the school years must be changed. This article reviews our understanding of adults with language-learning disabilities. Ecological and context-specific perspectives are presented to provide a framework for understanding the chronic and persistent nature of these disabilities across the lifespan. Descriptors of language-learning disorders in adults are provided that focus the clinician on observable behaviors to guide the pr

Chromosomal translocation in a child with SLI and apraxia.

A case study is presented of a 5-year-old boy who was classified as preschool handicapped and was assessed as having a specific expressive language impairment with verbal apraxia. Chromosomal studies revealed a de novo (new) balanced translocation between first and second chromosomes. Results of the neurological, speech/language, cognitive, and play evaluations revealed a child with a severe expressive speech-language deficit but good nonverbal cognitive and communicative skills. The hypothesis of a relationship between a chromosomal translocation and speech/language disorders is explored.
