Diagnostic criteria of developmental apraxia of speech used by clinical speech-language pathologists.

The diagnostic criteria used to identify developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) have been at the center of controversy for decades. Despite the difficulty in determining the characteristics that differentiate DAS from other speech acquisition disorders, many children are identified with this disorder. The current report presents the criteria used by 75 speech-language pathologists to establish a diagnosis of DAS. Although 50 different characteristics were identified, 6 of these characteristics accounted for 51.5% of the responses. These characteristics included inconsistent productions, general

Effect of hearing training on hearing and speech skills in children with speech sound disorders.

PURPOSE: to measure the effect of Brief Computerized Auditory Training (Brief-CAT) on behavioral auditory and speech skills in children with Speech Sound Disorder (SSD). METHODS: 14 children, aged 6 and 9, diagnosed with SSD participated. All children presented one or more altered auditory skills in the behavioral assessment of Central Auditory Processing (CAP). They underwent six sessions of Brief-CAT. CAP's behavioral auditory skills and speech were assessed and a questionnaire was administered pre and post Brief-CAT. Inferential analysis was carried out. RESULTS: Brief-CAT had an effect o

The role of reading experience in atypical cortical tracking of speech and speech-in-noise in dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a frequent developmental disorder in which reading acquisition is delayed and that is usually associated with difficulties understanding speech in noise. At the neuronal level, children with dyslexia were reported to display abnormal cortical tracking of speech (CTS) at phrasal rate. Here, we aimed to determine if abnormal tracking relates to reduced reading experience, and if it is modulated by the severity of dyslexia or the presence of acoustic noise. We included 26 school-age children with dyslexia, 26 age-matched controls and 26 reading-level matched controls. All were native

The Relationship Between Single-Word Speech Severity and Intelligibility in Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between perceived single-word speech severity and intelligibility in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), with and without comorbid language impairment (LI), and to investigate the contribution of different CAS signs to perceived single-word speech severity and single-word intelligibility. METHOD: Thirty children with CAS, 18 with comorbid LI, completed the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation-Second Edition (GFTA-2). Trained judges coded children's responses for signs of CAS and percent phonemes correct. Nine l

Limbic and cortical control of phonation for speech in response to a public speech preparation stressor.

Knowledge on brain networks subserving vocalization in vocally healthy individuals under various task conditions is scarce but paramount to understand voice disorders. The aims of our study were to determine (1) the effect of social-evaluative stress on the central neural control of phonation underlying speech production; and (2) the neural signature, personality profile, and aerodynamic vocal function in relation to salivary cortisol responses. Thirteen vocally healthy females underwent an event-related sparse-sampling fMRI protocol consisting of voiced and whispered sentence productions with

Estimates of the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in persons with complex neurodevelopmental disorders.

Estimates of the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in persons with complex neurodevelopmental disorders (CND) can inform research in the biobehavioural origins and treatment of CND. The goal of this research was to use measures and analytics in a diagnostic classification system to estimate the prevalence of speech and motor speech disorders in convenience samples of speakers with one of eight types of CND. Audio-recorded conversational speech samples from 346 participants with one of eight types of CND were obtained from a database of participants recruited for genetic and behav

Poor Speech Perception Is Not a Core Deficit of Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Preliminary Findings.

PURPOSE: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is hypothesized to arise from deficits in speech motor planning and programming, but the influence of abnormal speech perception in CAS on these processes is debated. This study examined speech perception abilities among children with CAS with and without language impairment compared to those with language impairment, speech delay, and typically developing peers. METHOD: Speech perception was measured by discrimination of synthesized speech syllable continua that varied in frequency (/dɑ/-/ɡɑ/). Groups were classified by performance on speech and lan

A metric for predicting binaural speech intelligibility in stationary noise and competing speech maskers.

One criterion in the design of binaural sound scenes in audio production is the extent to which the intended speech message is correctly understood. Object-based audio broadcasting systems have permitted sound editors to gain more access to the metadata (e.g., intensity and location) of each sound source, providing better control over speech intelligibility. The current study describes and evaluates a binaural distortion-weighted glimpse proportion metric-BiDWGP-which is motivated by better-ear glimpsing and binaural masking level differences. BiDWGP predicts intelligibility from two alternati

[The Freiburg speech intelligibility test : A pillar of speech audiometry in German-speaking countries].

The Freiburg speech intelligibility test according to DIN 45621 was introduced around 60 years ago. For decades, and still today, the Freiburg test has been a standard whose relevance extends far beyond pure audiometry. It is used primarily to determine the speech perception threshold (based on two-digit numbers) and the ability to discriminate speech at suprathreshold presentation levels (based on monosyllabic nouns). Moreover, it is a measure of the degree of disability, the requirement for and success of technical hearing aids (auxiliaries directives), and the compensation for disability an

The Role of Somatosensory Information in Speech Perception: Imitation Improves Recognition of Disordered Speech.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace. METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no

Auditory hallucinations and the mismatch negativity: processing speech and non-speech sounds in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: In line with emerging research strategies focusing on specific symptoms rather than global syndromes in psychiatric disorders, we examined the functional neural correlates of auditory verbal hallucinations (AHs) in schizophrenia. Recent neuroimaging and behavioural evidence suggest a reciprocal relationship between auditory cortex response to external sounds versus that induced by AHs. METHODS: The mismatch negativity (MMN), a well established event-related potential (ERP) index of auditory cortex function, was assessed in 12 hallucinating patients (HP), 12 non-hallucinating patie

Using visible speech to train perception and production of speech for individuals with hearing loss.

The main goal of this study was to implement a computer-animated talking head, Baldi, as a language tutor for speech perception and production for individuals with hearing loss. Baldi can speak slowly; illustrate articulation by making the skin transparent to reveal the tongue, teeth, and palate; and show supplementary articulatory features, such as vibration of the neck to show voicing and turbulent airflow to show frication. Seven students with hearing loss between the ages of 8 and 13 were trained for 6 hours across 21 weeks on 8 categories of segments (4 voiced vs. voiceless distinctions,
