Daily Cochlear Implant Use Predicts Pitch and Melody Perception in Adolescents With Prelingual Deafness.

PURPOSE: While speech outcomes have been extensively studied, limited evidence exists regarding how real-world auditory experience shapes music perception-particularly in adolescents with prelingual deafness. This study aimed to explore the relationship between daily cochlear implant (CI) use, long-term CI experience, and music perception abilities in adolescent CI users. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 24 unilateral adolescent CI users and 12 age-matched peers with normal hearing (NH). Participants completed two music perception tasks: pitch direction discrimination (PDD) and mel

Audiometric results following endolymphatic sac surgery.

Decompression and drainage of the endolymphatic sac is a surgical procedure which was developed to relieve vertigo and hopefully to maintain or improve hearing in patients with Meniere's disease. In this study, 16 medically diagnosed Meniere's disease patients who underwent endolymphatic sac surgery were followed audiometrically for a period of up to three years. Pre- and postoperative audiometric and other symptomatic findings were reported. Results indicated that in the greatest majority of cases hearing remained essentially unchanged or was improved. Poorer hearing was found in 26.3% of the

Neural Adaptation at Stimulus Onset and Speed of Neural Processing as Critical Contributors to Speech Comprehension Independent of Hearing Threshold or Age.

Background: It is assumed that speech comprehension deficits in background noise are caused by age-related or acquired hearing loss. Methods: We examined young, middle-aged, and older individuals with and without hearing threshold loss using pure-tone (PT) audiometry, short-pulsed distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (pDPOAEs), auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), speech comprehension (OLSA), and syllable discrimination in quiet and noise. Results: A noticeable decline of hearing sensitivity in extended high-frequency regions and its influence on lo

Nonauditory Functions in Low-performing Adult Cochlear Implant Users.

INTRODUCTION: Despite substantial benefits of cochlear implantation (CI) there is a high variability in speech recognition, the reasons for which are not fully understood. Especially the group of low-performing CI users is under-researched. Because of limited perceptual quality, top-down mechanisms play an important role in decoding the speech signal transmitted by the CI. Thereby, differences in cognitive functioning and linguistic skills may explain speech outcome in these CI subjects. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen post-lingually deaf CI recipients with a maximum speech perception of 30% in

The Persian version of auditory word discrimination test (P-AWDT) for children: Development, validity, and reliability.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory discrimination of speech sounds is an important perceptual ability and a precursor to the acquisition of language. Auditory information is at least partially necessary for the acquisition and organization of phonological rules. There are few standardized behavioral tests to evaluate phonemic distinctive features in children with or without speech and language disorders. The main objective of the present study was the development, validity, and reliability of the Persian version of auditory word discrimination test (P-AWDT) for 4-8-year-old children. METHODS: A total of 120

Word recognition and the articulation index in older listeners with probable age-related auditory neuropathy.

This retrospective analysis of existing data was derived from 957 members of a population-based cohort who participated in a prior study of the prevalence of central auditory dysfunction. Word recognition scores (WRS) at three intensity levels were compared to predicted scores based on the Articulation Index (AI) and the Thornton-Raffin 95 percent critical differences. In 112 (11.7 percent) participants, one or more word recognition scores were significantly below the predicted score, which we consider a subtle sign of possible auditory neuropathy. In contrast, classic signs of retrocochlear d

Spectral peak picking improves tactile speech perception.

Individual differences in speech perception often arise from disparities in access to acoustic-phonetic cues, particularly among those with hearing loss. Haptic hearing aids, which convey speech information through the sense of touch, offer a complementary pathway to improve speech understanding. However, effectively transmitting critical speech features through vibrotactile stimulation remains challenging. To address this challenge, we introduce a tactile spectral peak picking (tSPP) approach, integrated into a vocoder-based audio-to-tactile conversion algorithm to enhance vibrotactile phoneme

Categorical speech perception deficits distinguish language and reading impairments in children.

We examined categorical speech perception in school-age children with developmental dyslexia or Specific Language Impairment (SLI), compared to age-matched and younger controls. Stimuli consisted of synthetic speech tokens in which place of articulation varied from 'b' to 'd'. Children were tested on categorization, categorization in noise, and discrimination. Phonological awareness skills were also assessed to examine whether these correlated with speech perception measures. We observed similarly good baseline categorization rates across all groups; however, when noise was added, the SLI grou

Emotional prosody perception and production in dementia of the Alzheimer's type.

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors investigated emotional prosody in patients with moderate Dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) With Late Onset. It was expected that both expression and reception of prosody would be impaired relative to age-matched controls. METHOD: Twenty DAT and 20 control participants engaged in 2 expressive and 2 receptive tasks with randomly presented exemplars of sentences targeting the emotions of happiness, anger, sadness, and surprise. RESULTS: In the expressive tasks, objective acoustic measurements revealed significantly less pitch modulation by the patient gr

Significance of hearing preservation in acoustic neuroma surgery.

In the past 10 years, 43 patients with acoustic neuroma have been operated on by the middle cranial fossa approach. In all cases, meticulous care was taken to preserve the cochlear function regardless of the degree of preoperative hearing disorder. Thirty-nine of 43 patients had various degrees of residual hearing, hearing was preserved in 16 of these (41%). The best result was obtained in patients with a tumor located less than 1 cm from the porus. The hearing preservation rate was 64% (11/17). The patients recovered hearing acuity quite well, especially at low frequencies in 2 cases who had

[Hearing impairment in the so-called normal ear during Menière's disease].

A detailed audiological examination of 84 specially selected patients was performed. They had Meniere's disease without any audiometric changes in the so-called normal ear. The hearing function was characterized on the basis of threshold tonic audiometry, ultrasound sensitivity, lower limit of perceived sound frequencies, hearing discomfort level, dynamic range of the hearing field, and intelligibility of low voice speech masked by noise. It was demonstrated that all patients with Meniere's disease on the side of the so-called normal ear, where no symptoms of hearing insufficiency can be detec

Small fenestra stapedectomy. A preliminary report.

The small fenestra stapedectomy is based on a rationale of creating a more effective acoustical mechanical transmission system, while reducing potential labyrinthine disturbance. Surgical technique for the small fenestra stapedectomy is described, including the creation of the fenestra and the use of McGee stainless steel piston prosthesis with loose areolar tissue around the piston. Postoperative results are compared in a series of 100 cases, 50 having the small fenestra technique, SFT, and 50 having partial or total footplate removal procedure. Vestibular results demonstrate a noticeable red

The fragile nature of the speech-perception deficit in dyslexia: natural vs synthetic speech.

A number of studies reported that developmental dyslexics are impaired in speech perception, especially for speech signals consisting of rapid auditory transitions. These studies mostly made use of a categorical-perception task with synthetic-speech samples. In this study, we show that deficits in the perception of synthetic speech do not generalise to the perception of more naturally sounding speech, even if the same experimental paradigm is used. This contrasts with the assumption that dyslexics are impaired in the perception of rapid auditory transitions.

The Finnish speech-in-noise test in MELAS mutation and other sensorineural hearing impairments.

A computerized adaptive Finnish speech-in-noise test has recently been developed. The purpose of the present study was to measure speech recognition thresholds in noise (SRTN) in patients with sensorineural hearing impairment (SNHI) caused by mitochondrial mutation [mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS)] and in patients with SNHI from other causes and to compare them with those in normal hearing controls. SRTN differed significantly between controls and the patients with SNHI from other causes and between controls and the MELAS group, but not

Subclinical Auditory Neural Deficits in Patients With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with a variety of sensory complications. Very little attention has been given to auditory neuropathic complications in DM. The aim of this study was to determine whether type 1 DM (T1DM) affects neural coding of the rapid temporal fluctuations of sounds, and how any deficits may impact on behavioral performance. DESIGN: Participants were 30 young normal-hearing T1DM patients, and 30 age-, sex-, and audiogram-matched healthy controls. Measurements included electrophysiological measures of auditory nerve and brainstem function using the click-evo

Preoperative evaluation, surgical procedure, follow up and results of 150 cochlear implantations.

BACKGROUND: The cochlear implantation is among the most important achievements of medicine and biotechnology in the last 20 years, because it allows individuals who had never heard or had lost their hearing to perceive sound and improve their quality of life. Selection criteria for candidates are strict and are evaluated in each individual by a scientific committee specially trained for implantations which includes Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon, audiologist, psychiatrist and speech therapist. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In our department, the first cochlear implantation was performed in 1995. D

Anatomical and behavioral correlates of auditory perception in developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is typically associated with difficulties in basic auditory processing and in manipulating speech sounds. However, the neuroanatomical correlates of auditory difficulties in developmental dyslexia (DD) and their contribution to individual clinical phenotypes are still unknown. Recent intracranial electrocorticography findings associated processing of sound amplitude rises and speech sounds with posterior and middle superior temporal gyrus (STG), respectively. We hypothesize that regional STG anatomy will relate to specific auditory abilities in DD, and that auditory proc
