Speech-sound disorders are common in preschool-age children, and are characterized by difficulty in the planning and production of speech sounds and their combination into words and sentences. The objective of this study was to review and compare the results of the Sensory Profile (Dunn, 1999) in children with a specific type of speech-sound disorder, childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), and to explore the relationship between sensory processing and sound-production deficits. Participants were identified prospectively through an interdisciplinary apraxia clinic at a tertiary care pediatric hospi

Canonical babbling and volubility are common indicators of infant vocal development. If either indicator falls below values found in typical infants, it may be an early signal of a developmental disorder. The aim of this retrospective investigation was to examine home videos for the frequency of canonical babbles, age of canonical babbling onset, and overall volubility of eight infants later diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech and compare these data to that of six typically developing infants as well as four infants later diagnosed with a speech sound disorder. Results revealed the infa

The ability to predict and respond to upcoming stimuli is a critical skill for all animals, including humans. Prediction operates largely below conscious awareness to allow an individual to recall previously encountered stimuli and prepare an appropriate response, especially in language. The ability to predict upcoming words within typical speech patterns aids fluent comprehension, as conversational speech occurs quickly. Individuals with certain neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and dyslexia have deficits in their ability to generate and use predictions. Rodent models are often used

Purpose This was a companion study to a previous one (Biller & Johnson, 2019). The purpose was to develop a detailed descriptive profile of a minimally verbal child with a unique medical history and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The present report describes his social-cognitive and speech sound production abilities in relation to his potentially burgeoning spoken language. Method This in-depth, descriptive, clinical single-case study focused on a 3-year-old boy who was diagnosed with a chromosomal abnormality and ASD. The size of his spoken vocabulary fell at the upper limit for classifying

Reading is a unique, cognitive human skill crucial to life in modern societies, but, for about 10% of the children, learning to read is extremely difficult. They are affected by a neurodevelopmental disorder called dyslexia. Although impaired auditory and speech sound processing is widely assumed to characterize dyslexic individuals, emerging evidence suggests that dyslexia could arise from a more basic cross-modal letter-to-speech sound integration deficit. Letters have to be precisely selected from irrelevant and cluttering letters by rapid orienting of visual attention before the correct le

BACKGROUND: There is substantial evidence for the detrimental impact of preterm birth on language development compared to children born at term. However, little is known regarding speech sound development of preterm infants. Speech development precedes language development and requires investigation in its own right. A clear picture of the evidence for speech sound development in preterm-born children is important to enable clinical services in early identification and intervention for these children.
AIM: To understand the extent and type of evidence relating to typical and atypical speech s

This report describes three extensions to a classification system for paediatric speech sound disorders termed the Speech Disorders Classification System (SDCS). Part I describes a classification extension to the SDCS to differentiate motor speech disorders from speech delay and to differentiate among three sub-types of motor speech disorders. Part II describes the Madison Speech Assessment Protocol (MSAP), an ∼ 2-hour battery of 25 measures that includes 15 speech tests and tasks. Part III describes the Competence, Precision, and Stability Analytics (CPSA) framework, a current set of ∼ 90 per

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders have a high rate of listening difficulties, but despite decades of research, the relation between these conditions remains unclear. Using resting state fMRI to image the child's brain noninvasively, we investigate the distribution of speech, non-speech 'sound', and visual processing networks in the forebrain, and examine a cross-section of age differences within these networks in children (6-14 years old) with normal hearing, including typically developing children, children with listening difficulties (LiD), and children with attention-deficit/hypera

This report investigates associations between prevalence of functional disturbances of the masticatory system and speech disorders. The subjects were 157 children referred for speech therapy to the hospital and a control group all 130 first-graders at two elementary schools, mean age 7 years 6 months. During clinical examinations, signs and symptoms of TMJ dysfunction were recorded by the same dentist. Articulatory speech disorders were diagnosed by the same phoniatrician using the Remes Articulatory Test (Remes, 1975) for the Finnish language. The results showed that in the hospital referral

PURPOSE: Analyze and compare the mean tongue contours and articulatory gestures in the production of the sound [j] in adults and children with typical and atypical speech development. The children with atypical development presented speech sound disorders.
METHODS: The diagnosis was determined by speech assessments. The study sample was composed of 90 individuals divided into three groups: 30 adults with typical speech development aged 19-44 years (AT), 30 children with typical speech development (CT), and 30 children with speech sound disorders, named as atypical in this study, aged four yea

Processing the vocalizations of conspecifics is critical for adaptive social interaction. A species-specific voice-selective region has been identified in the right STS that responds more strongly to human vocal sounds compared with a variety of nonvocal sounds. However, the STS also activates in response to a wide range of signals used in communication, such as eye gaze, biological motion, and speech. These findings raise the possibility that the voice-selective region of the STS may be especially sensitive to vocal sounds that are communicative, rather than to all human vocal sounds. Using f

Hypernasality is a common characteristic symptom across many motor-speech disorders. For voiced sounds, hypernasality introduces an additional resonance in the lower frequencies and, for unvoiced sounds, there is reduced articulatory precision due to air escaping through the nasal cavity. However, the acoustic manifestation of these symptoms is highly variable, making hypernasality estimation very challenging, both for human specialists and automated systems. Previous work in this area relies on either engineered features based on statistical signal processing or machine learning models traine

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the eruption stage and that of occlusal anomalies among etiological factors for articulatory speech disorders in a series of first-graders. The results suggest that even though speech and sound production have been reported to be mature by the age of five, some spontaneous correction of speech sound articulation occurs with maturing of the articulators with age and with eruption of some permanent teeth during the first phase of the mixed dentition.

INTRODUCTION: Repeatedly pairing a tone with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) alters frequency tuning across the auditory pathway. Pairing VNS with speech sounds selectively enhances the primary auditory cortex response to the paired sounds. It is not yet known how altering the speech sounds paired with VNS alters responses. In this study, we test the hypothesis that the sounds that are presented and paired with VNS will influence the neural plasticity observed following VNS-sound pairing.
METHODS: To explore the relationship between acoustic experience and neural plasticity, responses were reco

PURPOSE: This pilot study explored the volubility, consonant singleton acquisition, and syllable structure development between infants and toddlers (birth-24 months) with typical speech sound production (TYP) and those later diagnosed with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS).
METHOD: A retrospective longitudinal between- and within-subjects research design was utilized (TYP N=2; CAS N=4). Vocalizations from participants were analyzed between birth-24 months from home videotapes, volunteered by the children's parents, according to type (nonresonant vs. resonant), volubility, place and manner of

Speech disorders are highly prevalent in the preschool years, but frequently resolve. The neurobiological basis of the most persistent and severe form, apraxia of speech, remains elusive. Current neuroanatomical models of speech processing in adults propose two parallel streams. The dorsal stream is involved in sound to motor speech transformations, while the ventral stream supports sound/letter to meaning. Data-driven theories on the role of these streams during atypical speech and language development are lacking. Here we provide comprehensive behavioural and neuroimaging data on a large nov

PURPOSE: Auditory processing disorder (APD) may attribute to certain speech problems, as auditory processing plays a vital role in phonetic development during childhood. This research investigates the incidence of APD in individuals with misarticulations of the /r/, /s/, /k/, /θ/, /dʒ/, and /q/ speech sounds. These sounds represent different places of articulation, manners of articulation, and phonation.
METHOD: A total of 51 participants with articulation disorders aged 6-18 years underwent conventional peripheral assessments, including otoscopic examination, immittance measurement, and audi

This paper surveys acoustic studies of speech development and discusses the data with respect to the anatomical and neuromuscular maturation of the speech mechanism. The acoustic data on various aspects of speech production indicate that the accuracy of motor control improves with age until adult-like performance is achieved at about 11 or 12 years, somewhat after the age at which speech sound acquisition usually is judged to be complete. Other topics of discussion are (1) problems in the spectrographic analysis of children's speech, (2) formant scale factors that relate children's and adults'

PURPOSE: Treatment intensity (sometimes referred to as "practice amount") has been well-investigated in learning non-speech tasks, but its role in treating speech disorders has not been largely analysed. This study reviewed the literature regarding treatment intensity in speech disorders.
METHOD: A systematic search was conducted in four databases using appropriate search terms. Seven articles from a total of 580 met the inclusion criteria. The speech disorders investigated included speech sound disorders, dysarthria, acquired apraxia of speech and childhood apraxia of speech. All seven studi
