CONTEXT: In recent years, the Noble false widow spider Steatoda nobilis (Thorell, 1875) has expanded its range globally and may represent a potential threat to native ecosystems and public health. Increasing numbers in synanthropic habitats have led to more human encounters and envenomations. Steatoda nobilis bites were previously classed as medically significant with similarities to bites from true black widows of the genus Latrodectus but deemed milder in onset, with symptoms generally ranging from mild to moderate.
CASE DETAILS: In this manuscript we present 16 new cases of S. nobilis enve

BACKGROUND: Tarantula spiders are widely kept and bred in captivity by both adults and children. Their bites are generally considered harmless.
AIM: To explore the effects of envenoming by Old World tarantulas.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Clinical studies and review of conventional literature and hobbyist web sites.
RESULTS: Two men bitten on their index fingers by pet Old World tarantula spiders, Lampropelma nigerrimum (Ornithoctoninae) and Pterinochilus murinus (Harpactirinae) in England, developed intense local pain, swelling and episodic, agonising, generalised muscle cramps. In one of them, cr

Although in the majority of patients (90%), the bite wound of brown recluse spider resolves spontaneously, some patients may experience a severe reaction requiring hospitalization. A 25-year-old male developed severe hemolytic anemia, jaundice, and other complications following a brown recluse spider bite on his posterior right thigh. He was treated with methylprednisolone, antibiotics, and red blood cells (RBCs) transfusion without response. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) was added to the treatment regimen, and his hemoglobin (Hb) was eventually stabilized, leading to significant clinical

BACKGROUND: The venom of Loxosceles reclusa (Brown Recluse spider) can cause a severe, life-threatening hemolysis in humans for which no therapy is currently available in the USA beyond supportive measures. Because this hemolysis is uncommon, relatively little is known about its clinical manifestation, diagnosis, or management. Here, we aimed to clarify the clinical details of envenomation, to determine the efficacy of the complement inhibitor eculizumab to prevent the hemolysis in vitro, and to investigate markers of exposure to Brown Recluse venom.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed a 1

Reports of spider bites appear throughout North America. Bites associated with the brown recluse spider (Loxosceles recluse) cause serious medical complications because the venom of this spider contains a powerful necrotising agent with the potential to cause severe cutaneous necrosis. Although not much is known regarding the application of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to spider bites, this therapy has considerable literature support for its efficacy, cost-effectiveness and ease of use in chronic, difficult-to-heal wounds. A case study using NPWT to successfully treat a non healing u

Arachnophobia is a widespread phenomenon, despite the fact that the vast majority of spiders pose no meaningful threat to people. The introduction and spread of an invasive spider (Trichonephila clavata L. Koch, 1878) to the United States has prompted questions about whether it should be considered dangerous. These questions are particularly relevant because the spider is large, builds webs on and near human structures, and has been documented to consume small vertebrate prey. To understand the realistic threat this species represents, we examined spider-human interactions in the field with es

UNLABELLED: Necrotic arachnidism is the potential cutaneous reaction to spider bite venom. In the United States, members of 7 spider families may be responsible for envenomation sufficiently severe to warrant treatment. Characteristics of several spiders, in particular Loxosceles spiders, whose bite is toxic to humans are described, and diagnostic standards, preventive measures, and treatment options are reviewed. (J Am Acad Dermatol 2001;44:561-73.)
LEARNING OBJECTIVE: After the completion of this learning activity, participants should be familiar with the characteristics of several differen

Although spider bites are common in many parts of the United States, most domestic spiders are not substantially venomous to man. The best known exceptions are widow spiders (Latrodectus spp., including the black widow L. mactans) and brown spiders (Loxesceles spp., particularly the brown recluse, Lox. reclusa). However, cases of arachnid envenomation from the hobo spider (Tegenaria agrestis) are being reported increasingly in the Pacific Northwest. This report summarizes investigations of three cases of T. agrestis bites among persons in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington; spider bites reported to

Spider bites are a common emergency department complaint, accounting for ~21% of noncanine bites, injuries, and stings. Military service members, more so than most civilian personnel, are exposed to conditions that place them at increased risk for envenomation, stings, and bites. We present the case of an active duty service member working in a relatively austere environment who presented to a level 1 trauma center with a lesion consistent with a bite from a brown recluse spider, or Loxosceles reclusa.

Five patients with confirmed funnel-web spider bites (Hadronyche infensa) presented to Nambour General Hospital, in south-east Queensland, between 1992 and 1998. Two patients required antivenom; low doses of antivenom were effective. Patients were bitten in spring and early summer. In areas such as this, where funnel-web spider bites are reported less frequently than in New South Wales, clinicians and the community should be aware of the risks and immediate management of these bites.

Dermonecrotic arachnidism is the potential cutaneous reaction to spider bite venom. The yellow sac spider, genus Cheiracanthium, is historically considered capable of inducing dermonecrotic lesions. However, recently this belief has been hotly debated. In this article, the authors provide a brief review of dermonecrotic arachnidism and describe a case of a 20-year-old man who developed severe necrosis and edema of the left thigh, buttock, penis, and scrotum following the bite of a yellow sac spider. Notably, the patient wore a tight-fitting garment for multiple hours following the spider bite,

Three verified bites from Hololena spiders (Family Agelenidae) are presented here. Two male victims, each over 100 kg weight (bitten by female spiders), experienced headaches and 4-h episodes of vomiting. A female bite victim (bitten by a male spider) experienced minor reaction. None sought medical attention; symptoms resolved in a few days. Although these incidents were not serious, reactions in the male victims were more dynamic than usual generic spider bites (minor edema, minor erythema).

Bites from Loxosceles spiders can cause few symptoms to gangrenous skin necrosis or even death. To date, the treatment of the violin spider bite is largely unsatisfactory. Although no specific therapy exists, it has been suggested that heparin, steroids, dapsone, experimental antivenin and/or surgical excision may be beneficial. Three rare cases of suspected spider bite and their surgical treatment are reported. On the basis of geographical area, anamnesis and clinical symptoms, we suppose Loxoceles rufescens responsible for these bites.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to highlight the clinical features of spider bite envenomation, a subject which has not, to our knowledge, been previously published in Saudi Arabia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients (8 males and 2 females) aged between 13 and 75 years (mean 36.8) were hospitalized at King Fahad Hospital, Al Baha, with the diagnosis of spider bites during the 9-year period from June 1988 to May 1997.
RESULTS: One of the patients was bitten on the right hand by a brown spider, causing severe cellulitis and tissue necrosis, and requiring surgical debridement and pedi

Envenomation by the brown recluse spider (loxoscelism) is classically associated with a necrotic ulcer. Systemic manifestations occur in a minority of cases, but are generally mild and self-limited. The hematologic complications of brown recluse spider bite range from mild hemolysis to fulminant intravascular hemolysis with or without evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation. Intravascular hemolysis is a rare but occasionally lethal complication of brown recluse spider envenomation. This article presents two cases of severe hemolysis associated with loxoscelism occurring in two young

Loxosceles spp. bites can occasionally lead to systemic loxoscelism, including hemolysis and severe systemic illness. Secondary bacterial infections after spider bites are rarely reported and usually limited to skin commensals. We describe a patient with violin spider (Loxosceles rufescens) bite complicated by Capnocytophaga canimorsus sepsis, an emerging zoonotic pathogen classically linked to dog and cat bites. Blood cultures confirmed the infection, although subsequent non-viability of the isolate precluded antimicrobial susceptibility testing and genomic characterization. This case highlig

Here, we present a case of a 55-year-old male, who was admitted with a spider bite, which caused swelling of the hand and painful muscle spasms along with palpitations. The patient made a complete recovery after the administration of intravenous calcium gluconate, followed by oral calcium supplements. Although no specific treatment exists in Sri Lanka for spider bites, calcium supplements can be beneficial for Sri Lankan ornamental tarantula (Poecilotheria fasciata) bites.

INTRODUCTION: Spider bites are common worldwide. Frequently symptoms resolve without any adverse outcome, but in rare cases the bite can cause severe morbidity. The most typical presentation of Mediterranean recluse spider (Loxosceles Rufescens) bite is a dermatonecrotic lesion of the skin (skin loxoscelism). When the only manifestation of a spider bite is an ulcerated skin lesion, clinical suspicion and differential diagnosis strongly depend on its site. We present the case of an ulcerated wound of the breast, diagnosed as a Mediterranean recluse spider bite.

Spider bites are not uncommon in our warm climate. The most prevalent species of venomous spiders in Israel are the brown recluse and the black widow. Although the black widow is more notorious than the recluse, for every bite by a black widow there are hundreds of recluse bites reported. Despite the numerous bites, there is little awareness amongst physicians with regard to the clinical signs of recluse bites, and very often the wrong diagnosis is made, resulting in complex and unnecessary treatments. The basis of this error stems from the numerous clinical diagnoses which closely imitate a r

The brown recluse, or fiddleback (violin) spider, is a poisonous spider of the Loxosceles genus that resides in warmer regions and old structures making the warm Mediterranean climate a natural habitat for the European species, L. rufescens Even in infested households, however, bites are rare, as they are nocturnal and unaggressive. In 2015, the first supposed death by L. rufescens occurred in Italy, but before and even after such bite, the literature on these spiders has been under-represented. This case report documents a confirmed bite by a violin spider on a medical student in Pavia, Italy
