Comparison of dogs with septic peritonitis due to S. lupi aberrant migration and dogs with other gastrointestinal causes of septic peritonitis. A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Septic peritonitis in dogs is a critical condition with high morbidity and mortality. Spirocerca lupi-associated septic peritonitis (SL) is an emerging and poorly described entity caused by aberrant larval migration resulting in mesenteric infarction and intestinal necrosis. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, and outcomes in dogs with SL, and to compare them with cases of gastrointestinal origin septic peritonitis (GI). METHODS: Forty-nine dogs diagnosed with septic peritonitis were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Dogs were assigne

Subcutaneous spirocercosis in a dog from Costa Rica and first molecular confirmation of Spirocerca lupi in Central America.

Spirocerca lupi is the etiological agent of spirocercosis in canids from tropics and subtropics in the world. This parasite can lead to life threatening complications, including the formation of fibro and osteosarcomas. A 5-year-old crossbreed Maltese dog from Costa Rica was presented to a veterinary clinic with two nodules in the subcutaneous tissues of the cervical region. One of the nodules resolved with intramuscular antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment. However, the other nodule persisted and became purulent. The content of the nodule was excised releasing two coiled 3-cm reddish wo

Laboratory breeding of two Phortica species (Diptera: Drosophilidae), vectors of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda.

BACKGROUND: Some species of drosophilid flies belonging to the genus Phortica feed on ocular secretions of mammals, acting as biological vectors of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda. This study describes an effective breeding protocol of Phortica variegata and Phortica oldenbergi in insectary conditions. METHODS: Alive gravid flies of P. oldenbergi, P. variegata and Phortica semivirgo were field collected in wooded areas of Lazio region (Italy) and allowed to oviposit singularly to obtain isofamilies. Flies were maintained in ovipots (200 ml) with a plaster-covered bottom to maintain h

Comorbid early esophageal cancer and Gongylonema pulchrum infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gongylonema pulchrum is a zoonotic parasite rarely found in humans. To date, there have been no reports on the carcinogenic properties of G. pulchrum, and there are few reports overall on the relationship between esophageal cancer and parasites. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the first case of esophageal gongylonemiasis coexisting with early esophageal cancer. The patient had no high-risk factors for esophageal cancer, such as smoking, flushing after drinking, or tumor history. We speculate the existence of unknown links between esophageal cancer and parasitic infection

Larval Gnathostoma hispidum detected in the red banded odd-tooth snake, Dinodon rufozonatum rufozonatum, from China.

A total of 205 larval gnathostomes were collected from 18 (22.5%) of 80 red banded odd-tooth snakes, Dinodon rufozonatum rufozonatum, which had been smuggled from China and confiscated at Customs in Busan, Republic of Korea. In order to identify the species, some of the larvae were observed by a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The larvae were 2.18 x 0.29 mm in average size, and had a pair of lips at the anterior end, a muscular esophagus, 2 pairs of cervical sacs, and brownish intestines. The head bulb was characteristically equipped with 4 rows of hooklets; the aver

[Human infection with Gongylonema pulchrum].

HISTORY: A 27-year-old woman repeatedly attended an outpatient clinic and reported sensations of movement within the buccal mucosa. Various local inspections were without any obvious abnormal findings. A few days later the patient brought a filiform structure, which she had extracted from the affected mucosa by manipulation with her toothbrush. INVESTIGATION: Microscopy indicated a gravid female nematode of the genus Gonglyonema. DIAGNOSIS: Gonglyonem pulchrum infection. TREATMENT AND COURSE: Careful inspection revealed a second worm at the other side of the oral cavity, which was extracted

[Gnathostomiasis caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum etiologically diagnosed upon extraction of the worm from the skin].

We report a patient with gnathostomiasis in whom a specific diagnosis of Gnathostoma spinigerum infestation was made morphologically upon removal of the worm. A 47-Year-old Japanese male on a business trip to Vietnam ate fried frog with a Vietnamese friend in January 2002, the friend was diagnosed with gnathostomiasis in June 2002. The patient noted swelling of the right leg with migration to the right arm, prompting him to our hospital in February 2003. Hematologic examination showed eosinophilia, and specific anti-gnathostome antibody was detected by a dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (

Case report: intraocular gnathostomiasis in Vietnam.

This is the report of the first case of intraocular gnathostomiasis diagnosed in Vietnam. The disease progressed in two months in two distinct phases: in the first phase, the patient had swellings, which appeared at different times and in different locations, on his face--this phase lasted around one month; the second phase was the embedding of the parasite in the vitreous cavity of the right eye and uveitis. Surgical extraction of a living Gnathostoma larva was carried out. Based on morphological, histological criteria, the larva may have been an atypical third-stage of Gnathostoma spinigerum

Gnathostomiasis in frog-eating snakes from Japan.

Gnathostoma doloresi parasitizes the gastric wall of wild (boars) and domestic (pigs) swine (Sus scrofa). Its larvae cause cutaneous larva migrans in humans. Amphibians, reptiles and a freshwater fish are infected with the advanced 3rd stage larvae. Prevalence of G. doloresi larvae were surveyed in several snakes, especially in a common frog-eating snake (Rhabdophis tigrinus). All species of snakes examined were infected with G. doloresi larvae suggesting that snakes are important reservoir hosts. Prevalence of G. doloresi larvae in frog-eating snakes was lower than that found in mammal-eating

Linear lichen planus mimicking creeping eruption.

A 42-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with a linear eruption on her right flank of two months duration. Because she had eaten loach-fish a month before she noticed the eruption, a creeping eruption due to Gnathostoma spp. was initially suspected, but the histological findings of the biopsy specimens showed typical features of lichen planus. Linear lichen planus is discussed based on the cases accumulated in the literature regarding the distribution of Blaschko lines.

Parasites of the stomach in donkeys of the highveld of Zimbabwe.

Fourteen donkeys from a communal area of the Zimbabwean highveld were examined for stomach parasites during July and November of 1986 and January and April of 1987. All 14 animals were infected. Habronema muscae occurred in 12, Draschia megastoma in 11, H. majus in 9, Trichostrongylus axei in 9, Gasterophilus intestinalis in 14 and G. nasalis in 1 donkey. The lowest level of infection was in January for the helminths and in April for Gasterophilus larvae. The peak burdens of parasites were in July for Habronema spp. and in November for D. megastoma and Gasterophilus larvae. Infections with spi

Description of Ophthalmonema diodontis gen. et sp. n. (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae), a parasite of the eye and surrouding tissues of porcupinefishes (Diodon spp.), with a key to cystidicolid genera.

A new nematode genus and species, Ophthalmonema diodontis gen. et sp. n. (Cystidicolidae), are established based on female specimens (males remain unknown) collected from both eyes of an aquarium-kept spot-fin porcupinefish, Diodon hystrix Linnaeus (Diodontidae, Tetraodontiformes), originally caught in coastal waters off Florida, USA. Examination by light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the mouth structure of this nematode, particularly the presence of two conspicuously large, rounded, opposing dorsoventral plates, each connected by a narrow bridge to the inner end of

Aspects of the Histopathology of Clarias gariepinus Infected With the Camallanid Parasite Procamallanus (Procamallanus) pseudolaeviconchus Moravec and Van As, 2015.

Histopathological studies of infections with the nematode Procamallanus (Procamallanus) pseudolaeviconchus Moravec and Van As, 2015, an intestinal parasite of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822), are scarce. The current study describes histopathological changes in the stomach of C. gariepinus infected with P. (P.) pseudolaeviconchus and links it to the parasite's wound-inflicting and feeding structures using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A total of 20 fish were collected from the Vaal River below the Vaal Dam and Lake Heritage in the Crocodile River, Gauteng, So

Spirocerca lupi draft genome, vaccine and anthelmintic targets.

Spirocerca lupi is a parasitic nematode affecting predominantly domestic dogs. It causes spirocercosis, a disease that is often fatal. The assembled draft genome of S. lupi consists of 13,627 predicted protein-coding genes and is approximately 150 Mb in length. Several known anthelmintic gene targets such as for β-Tubulin, glutamate, and GABA receptors as well as known vaccine gene targets such as cysteine protease inhibitor and cytokines were identified in S. lupi by comparing orthologs of C. elegans anthelmintic gene targets as well as orthologs to known vaccine candidates. New anthelmintic

A new nematode species, Tanqua siamensis sp. nov. (Nematoda: Gnathostomatidae) in the rainbow water snake, Enhydris enhydris, from Thailand.

The genus Tanqua Blanchard, 1904, infests reptiles, particularly those inhabiting aquatic environments. This study examined a population of rainbow water snakes, Enhydris enhydris (Schneider, 1799), collected from southern Thailand. Adult nematodes consistent with Tanqua were found in the stomach. Various morphometric, meristic and qualitative morphological variables, including size, ratios, distances, cephalic appearance, the number of caudal papillae and other features, serve to distinguish the specimens from other species within the genus. In particular, Tanqua anomala and Tanqua diadema, w

Phortica oldenbergi (Diptera: Drosophilidae): A new potential vector of the zoonotic Thelazia callipaeda eyeworm.

Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic nematode parasitizing the eyes of many hosts species, primarily dogs. To date Phortica variegata and Phortica okadai are the only known vectors of this nematode in Europe and China, respectively. In this study we investigated the role played by a third species, Phortica oldenbergi, as vector of T. callipaeda in Europe. Drosophilid flies of this species were collected in central Italy and maintained in laboratory. One hundred forty P. oldenbergi were experimentally infected with T. callipaeda L1 recovered from field collected gravid females belonging to haploty
