Long-Term Selection with α-Solanine Enhances Tolerance and Drives Multilevel Physiological Remodeling in Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous pest exposed to plant defensive chemicals. We tested whether sustained selection by the potato steroidal glycoalkaloid α-solanine induces changes in tolerance, life-history performance, and physiology. A potato-sprout-derived preparation was standardized for α-solanine content by targeted LC-ESI-MS/MS, and a selected line was maintained for 12 generations on a diet containing 1.0 mg α-solanine g-1. Selected and unselected lines were compared across normal artificial diet, α-solanine diet, and potat

Photodynamic larvicidal activity of magnesium chlorophyllin and magnesium chlorophyllin zinc oxide nanocomposite against Spodoptera frugiperda with non-target safety assessment.

Chemical pesticides have been used as a reliable method of controlling pests on crops. However, their applications have led to the development of resistance, environmental problems, and risks to human health. Therefore, new chemicals in nanoform such as chlorophyll derivatives could be a good choice for pest control through the induction of reactive oxygen species, liberating singlet oxygen when they are excited by photo exposure. The present work evaluated the toxicity of magnesium chlorophyllin (Mg-Chl) and magnesium chlorophyllin zinc oxide (Mg-Chl-ZnO NC) nanocomposite on Spodoptera frugip

Functionalized Thiacalix[4]arenes as Dual Metal-Ion Extractants and Insecticidal Agents: Synthesis, Characterization, and Insecticidal Activity Against Spodoptera littoralis.

Five carbonyl thiacalixarene derivatives (5, 6, 7, 9, and 10) were synthesized via the reactions of mono-substituted thiacalixarenes (2, 3, 4, and 8) with ethyl bromoacetate, 2-chloro-N-(p-tolyl)acetamide, or 2-chloro-N-(p-tolyl)ethanethioamide. The chemical structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed by IR and NMR spectroscopy. The metal ion recognition abilities of these thiacalixarene derivatives were investigated through liquid-liquid extraction of various metal picrates (Na+, K+, Cs+, Ag+, Pb2 +, Cd2 +, Co2 +, Ni2 +, Cu2 +, and Hg2 +) from water to dichloromethane. Genome profiling of an indigenous Bacillus thuringiensis isolate, T405 toxic against the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

In this study, we present the molecular and insecticidal characteristics of an indigenous Bt isolate T405 toxic against the maize fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda. The presence of cry1, cry2 (cry2Aa & cry2Ab) and vip3A1 genes in T405 was confirmed. The SDS-PAGE gel analysis confirmed the occurrence of Cry and Vip proteins with molecular masses of 130, ∼88 and 65 kDa in T405. LC50 estimates of T405 and HD1 were 161.37 and 910.73 μg ml-1 for neonates whereas, 412.29 and 1014.95 μg ml-1 correspondingly for 2nd instar FAW larvae. Scanning Electron Microscopy depicted the existence of bip

Wavelength-Specific Artificial Light Disrupts Calling Behavior, Pheromone Blend Composition, and Mating Success in the Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Artificial light at night (ALAN) and the broader use of artificial light in agriculture are increasingly recognized to affect the physiology and behavior of nocturnal insects, yet their influence on pheromone-mediated reproductive communication in economically important insect pest species remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of artificial illumination on calling behavior, sex pheromone production, blend composition, and mating success in the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda, under both laboratory and semi-field conditions. Virgin females were exposed during the scot

Insecticidal Activity of Trichilia hirta L. (Sapindales: Meliaceae) Extracts Against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Larvae and the Identification of Bioactive Compounds.

Studying plants with insecticidal activity and the compounds responsible for this type of activity is a promising approach for discovering new insecticides. Plants from the Meliaceae family are rich in limonoids, compounds with proven insecticidal action against certain pests. This study investigated the insecticidal activity of the crude methanolic extracts from Trichilia hirta fruits against Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. An initial toxicity bioassay showed 100% larval mortality when testing T. hirta extract. The crude extract was partitioned using ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and n-butano

Unravelling the efficacy and reproductive potential of newly discovered entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema indicum and Steinernema shori against Spodoptera frugiperda in maize.

INTRODUCTION: Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), commonly known as the fall armyworm, is one of the most destructive insect pests of maize worldwide, causing substantial economic losses. Its widespread occurrence and increasing resistance to conventional insecticides have intensified the need for effective and sustainable management approaches. Reliance on chemical pesticides not only accelerates resistance development but also poses significant risks to the environment and beneficial non-target organisms. Consequently, environmentally friendly alternatives, particularly biological control st

Molecular mechanisms of cytochrome P450-mediated detoxification of tetraniliprole, spinetoram, and emamectin benzoate in the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith).

The fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is a highly damaging invasive omnivorous pest that has developed varying degrees of resistance to commonly used insecticides. To investigate the molecular mechanisms of tolerance to tetraniliprole, spinetoram, and emamectin benzoate, the enzyme activity, synergistic effect, and RNA interference were implemented in S. frugiperda. The functions of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450) in the tolerance to tetraniliprole, spinetoram, and emamectin benzoate in S. frugiperda was determined by analysing changes in detoxification metabolic enzy

An Optimized Corn-Based Artificial Diet Reshapes the Larval Metabolome, Leading to Mixed Improvements in Longevity and Reproductive Traits in Spodoptera litura.

Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) is a major agricultural pest, and the establishment of efficient mass-rearing systems is critical for advancing biological control and integrated pest management strategies. In our previous work, evaluation of 17 artificial diets identified an optimised corn-based formulation (F15) that significantly improved larval performance relative to a standard control (CK) diet. However, the metabolic mechanisms underlying these performance differences remain largely unresolved. Here, we employed untargeted metabolomics based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometr

Efficacy of the entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae on Pupal stage of the common Lepidopteran pests, Ostrinia furnacalis, Mythimna separata, and Spodoptera litura.

Steinernema carpocapsae is an entomopathogenic nematode with established efficacy against various agricultural pests. However, its impact on key lepidopteran pests, including Ostrinia furnacalis, Mythimna separata, and Spodoptera litura, remains underexplored, particularly at the pupal stage. This study evaluates the efficacy of the nematode through a combination of choice-based attraction assays, non-choice infection performance bioassays involving direct application to specific pupal body parts, and assessments of sublethal effects on adult survival and oviposition following pupal-stage expo

Characterization of the inheritance of field-evolved resistance to diamides in the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) population from Puerto Rico.

The fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is one of the most destructive pests of corn. New infestations have been reported in the East Hemisphere, reaching India, China, Malaysia, and Australia, causing severe destruction to corn and other crops. In Puerto Rico, practical resistance to different mode of action compounds has been reported in cornfields. In this study, we characterized the inheritance of resistance to chlorantraniliprole and flubendiamide and identified the possible cross-resistance to cyantraniliprole and cyclaniliprole. The Puerto Rican (PR) strain showed high levels of resis

Blue Light Exposure Caused Large-Scale Transcriptional Changes in the Abdomen and Reduced the Reproductive Fitness of the Fall Armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda.

In the present study, we found that blue light stress negatively affected the development periods, body weight, survival and reproduction of Spodoptera frugiperda, and it showed a dose-dependent reaction, as longer irradiation caused severer effects. Further transcriptome analysis found blue light stress induced fast and large-scale transcriptional changes in the head, thorax and, particularly, the abdomen of female S. frugiperda adults. A functional enrichment analysis indicated that shorter durations of blue light irradiation induced the upregulation of more stress response- and defense-rela

Proteomic Profiling Analysis of Male Infertility in Spodoptera Litura Larvae Challenged with Azadirachtin and its Potential-Regulated Pathways in the Following Stages.

Biopesticides are considered as an alternative to synthetic pesticide with a focus on increasing agricultural productivity as well as maintaining the ecosystem. Prior to application, its potential mechanism should be clearly addressed. Here, the effects of azadirachtin on the reproductive behavior in male Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) are determined. To further explore its molecular mechanism, an iTRAQ (isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation) based approach is applied to identify the differentially expressed proteins regulated by azadirachtin at two developmental stages. Juvenile Hormone and Ecdysteroids Facilitate the Adult Reproduction Through the Methoprene-Tolerant Gene and Ecdysone Receptor Gene in the Female Spodoptera frugiperda.

Insects, as the most diverse and numerous group in the animal kingdom, are at least partly dependent on the reproduction process, which is strictly regulated by the 'classic' insect hormones: juvenile hormone (JH), and 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E). However, the regulatory mechanism governing the reproduction of JH and 20E in Spodoptera frugiperda remains unclear. In this study, ovarian development and ovulation in female S. frugiperda were assessed through dissection of the ovaries following treatment with JH analog (JHA) and 20E. Moreover, the expression patterns of the JH-signal and 20E-signal-r

Validating Indigenous Farmers' Practice in the Management of the Fall Armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) in Maize Cropping Systems in Africa.

Before the invasion of the fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda into Africa, smallholder farmers had been using indigenous practices such as applying fish soup to plants to manage stemborer pests. Although farmers have since begun adapting this practice against FAW, no attempt has been made to scientifically evaluate this practice. Therefore, we assessed the efficacy of applying fish soup to maize plants that were artificially infested with FAW under semi-field conditions. Our results showed that foliar damage is inversely correlated with the concentration of a fish soup and sugar solutio

Synergistic and additive interactions of Shewanella sp., Pseudomonas sp. and Thauera sp. with chlorantraniliprole and emamectin benzoate for controlling Spodoptera litura (Fabricius).

The imprudent use of insecticides causes the development of resistance in insect pest populations, contamination of the environment, biological imbalance and human intoxication. The use of microbial pathogens combined with insecticides has been proposed as an alternative strategy for insect pest management. This IPM approach may offer effective ways to control pests, in addition to lowering the risk of chemical residues in the environment. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) is a major pest of many crops like cotton, maize, tobacco, cauliflower, cabbage, and fodder crops globally. Here, we evaluated

The role of serine- and metalloproteases in Nasonia vitripennis venom in cell death related processes towards a Spodoptera frugiperda Sf21 cell line.

Proteases are predominant venom components of the ectoparasitoid Nasonia vitripennis. Two protease families, serine proteases and metalloproteases were examined for their possible cytotoxic functions in the Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf21) cell line using protease inhibitors that inactivate one or both protease families. Viability assays on adherent cells indicated that both protease families are among the main cytotoxic compounds of N. vitripennis venom. However, viability assays and flow cytometry performed on suspension cells 24h after envenomation revealed that inactivation of metalloproteases
