Stress and burnout are significant concerns in nursing academia, as students balance clinical and academic demands, faculty manage teaching and research responsibilities, and staff navigate heavy workloads. Traditional wellness initiatives often address these groups separately, overlooking the value of shared engagement across the life course. This case study examined the development, implementation, and outcomes of an evidence-based wellness program within a College of Nursing. The life course framework reflected the continuum of human development, spanning students entering nursing directly

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected shared resource lab (SRL) staff in-person availability at institutions globally. This article discusses the challenges of ensuring reliable instrument performance and quality data output while facility staff and external service provider on-site presence is severely limited. Solutions revolve around the adoption of remote monitoring and troubleshooting platforms, provision of self-service troubleshooting resources specific to facility instruments and workflows, development of an assistance contact policy, and ensuring efficiency of limited in-per

IntroductionIn sustainable development, time is a physically limited resource affecting economic and social sustainability. In healthcare systems, the time of healthcare staff is linked to economic constraints, while the time patients spend travelling and receiving treatment affects social sustainability, including access to healthcare services. Reducing time costs in healthcare may contribute to several of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within Agenda 2030. This exploratory study aimed to: (i) probe whether a low-budget questionnaire combined with standardised data processing coul

BACKGROUND: Back pain is a huge global problem. For some people, the pain is so severe that they feel the need to present to an emergency department (ED). Our aim was to explore patient and staff perspectives for the development of a digital care pathway (DCP) for people with back pain who have presented to ED, including acceptability, barriers and facilitators.
METHODS: We used a descriptive phenomenology approach using semi-structured interviews with patient and staff participants at a tertiary hospital. Interviews were transcribed and data codes were developed using inductive thematic anal

BACKGROUND: Eldercare and care of people with functional impairments is organized by the municipalities in Sweden. Improving care in these areas is complex, with multiple stakeholders and organizations. Appropriate strategies to develop capability for continuing organizational improvement and learning (COIL) are needed. The purpose of our study was to develop and pilot-test a flexible, multilevel approach for COIL capability building and to identify what it takes to achieve changes in key actors' approaches to COIL. The approach, named "Sustainable Improvement and Development through Strategic

Administrators of publicly-funded mental health and substance abuse programs described their agencies' activities, policy development, the administrative impediments, and training needs related to caring for HIV-infected clients. Almost all have served HIV-infected clients and admit clients to their programs regardless of HIV status. The administrators reported little staff opposition to working with this clientele. Liability and confidentiality concerning testing and client/staff safety were major concerns. The difficulty of providing needed medical care and the expense of treating such clien

BACKGROUND: Wound infection causes morbidity and mortality in burns. UK National Burns Care Standards state that guidance should be used to diagnose and treat burn wound infection. However, surveys of senior staff about standard operating procedures or guidance in UK burns services indicate that they are infrequently available (Papini et al., 1995; Lymperopoulos et al., 2015). Staff may have differing views and experiences of guidance use according to their role. This survey investigated the extent to which guidance is available, and current practices used for diagnosis and treatment of burn w

OBJECTIVES: To describe development and implementation of a three-stage 'total facility' approach to reducing health facility HIV stigma in Ghana and Tanzania, to facilitate replication.
DESIGN: HIV stigma in healthcare settings hinders the HIV response and can occur during any interaction between client and staff, between staff, and within institutional processes and structures. Therefore, the design focuses on multiple socioecological levels within a health facility and targets all levels of staff (clinical and nonclinical).
METHODS: The approach is grounded in social cognitive theory prin

In the summer of 2001 an outbreak of Escherichia coli O157 gastroenteritis affected staff and residents of a care home for the elderly in the West Midlands, UK. E. coli O157 phage type 2 was isolated from faeces in eight patients and 12 staff members. Thirty-five staff and 40 residents met the case definition for clinical gastrointestinal infection. Serological testing identified a further 14 possible cases of infection amongst asymptomatic staff and residents. The outbreak was atypical, as the disease seemed to be milder than has been observed in past outbreaks in similar settings. The index

BackgroundIn the UK, care home staff are often involved in musical practices as part of their professional activities. However, to date there is a lack of relational evidence that underpins improvisational music-making programmes in care homes, as related to the wellbeing of care home staff and musicians who deliver such work. This process evaluation accesses Manchester Camerata's 20-week 'Music in Mind Training' programme for care home staff working with people living with dementia in care homes, with a focus on care home staff.Aims(i) To produce a Theory of Change model outlining the core me

BACKGROUND: Video-reflexive ethnography (VRE) has been argued to be an alternative approach to collaborative learning in healthcare teams, more able to capture the complexities of the healthcare environment than simulation. This study aims to explore the feasibility and acceptability of employing VRE as an improvement tool in acute maternity services.
METHOD: Focused ethnography and semi-structured interviews (n = 17) explored the feasibility of employing VRE from the perspective of the researcher-facilitator, and that of the healthcare staff participants. Reflexive thematic analysis was used

AIM: To explore nurse leaders' perceptions of leadership practices and development needs.
BACKGROUND: Nursing leadership has gained increasing attention due to the growing complexity of healthcare systems and the need to ensure high-quality patient care, staff retention and job satisfaction. However, recently many nurses assume leadership roles with limited preparation, highlighting the need to strengthen leadership development, education and training. Despite growing interest in nursing leadership, limited research has explored how nurse leaders perceive their roles, competencies and educati

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the second leading cause of global disability with the majority of stroke-related disabilities occurring in low- and middle-income countries. In Myanmar, ongoing political instability and healthcare disruption have further limited access to stroke rehabilitation services. This study evaluated a contextually tailored continuing professional development program designed to strengthen evidence-based stroke rehabilitation knowledge, skills, and clinical implementation among physiotherapists in Myanmar.
METHODS: This mixed methods, quasi-experimental study used convenience sa

Academic psychiatry : the journal of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training and the Association for Academic Psychiatry2016eng
OBJECTIVE: The culture of academic medical institutions impacts trainee education, among many other faculty and patient outcomes. Disrespectful behavior by faculty is one of the most challenging and common problems that, left unattended, disrupts healthy work and learning environments. Conversely, a respectful environment facilitates learning, creates a sense of safety, and rewards professionalism. The authors developed surveys and an intervention in an effort to better understand and improve climate concerns among health sciences faculty at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), a re
