The effects of age and postural constraints on prehension.

Older adults adapt the execution of complex motor tasks to use compensatory strategies in the reaching-to-grasping (i.e., prehension) movement. The presence of postural constraints may exacerbate these compensatory strategies. Therefore, we investigated the reach-to-grasp action with different postural constraints (sitting, standing, and walking) in younger and older people and evaluated the postural stability during the reach-to-grasp action. Thirty individuals (15 younger and 15 older adults) performed the prehension under three postural tasks: sitting, standing, and walking. The reaching mo

Differences in airway lumen area between supine and upright computed tomography in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: No clinical studies to date have compared the inspiratory and expiratory airway lumen area between supine and standing positions. Thus, the aims of this study were twofold: (1) to compare inspiratory and expiratory airway lumen area (IAA and EAA, respectively) on computed tomography (CT) among supine and standing positions; and (2) to investigate if IAA and EAA are associated with lung function abnormality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: Forty-eight patients with COPD underwent both low-dose conventional (supine position) and upright CT (sta

Validation of a data logger for measuring standing time and seat angles for community-based standing devices.

CONTEXT: Little is understood about community-based standing device use and the impact of standing on health outcomes (e.g. pressure injury) in those living with spinal cord injury (SCI). This project reports on the accuracy of a commercially available data logger for measuring standing time and seat angle. METHODS: A standing frame and a standing manual wheelchair were each instrumented with a commercially available data logger and each was tested by an non-disabled participant. Standing time in the standing frame was calculated from the data logger and compared to a user-recorded standing l

A Quasi-Randomized Clinical Trial to Compare the Effects of Suspension Versus Instability Training on Balance.

CONTEXT: Suspension training devices are becoming increasingly popular. Most studies analyzed the effectiveness according to diverse measures in patients with or without conditions at any age. The characteristics of suspension training are very specific and can increase instability and; therefore, enhance balance. The goal was to determine the effects of suspension training on balance by comparing it with instability training. DESIGN: Two-arm, randomized trial. METHODS: 44 young adults, aged 22.4 years old, with no musculoskeletal condition, took part. There were 2 interventions, suspension

Posturography measures in specific ballet stance position discriminate ballet dancers with different occurrences of musculoskeletal injuries.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify the postural sway variables that can distinguish between ballet dancers with high and low occurrences of musculoskeletal injuries. METHODS: Fourteen professional ballet dancers were assigned to a high-occurrence group (N = 5, reports >2 injuries in the previous 6-months) or a low-occurrence group (N = 9, reports ≤1 injury). Center-of-pressure (COP) data were acquired using a force platform during the following tasks: single-leg stance with eyes open, single-leg stance with eyes closed, and demi-pointe stance with eyes open. The COP standard deviation (

Center of pressure velocities in patients with body lateropulsion: three case report series of Wallenberg's syndrome.

PURPOSE: In patients with Wallenberg's syndrome who present with body lateropulsion (BL), whether the center of pressure (COP) position and velocity characterize postural dysregulation is unknown. We measured time-course changes in COP parameters in three BL patients. METHODS: Three patients with acute Wallenberg's syndrome presented with BL. COP was measured for time-course changes during first standing and every week thereafter. COP positions, which indicate the deviation in the center of gravity, were calculated. COP velocities associated with dynamic movements of the center of gravity wer

Four degree-of-freedom lumped parameter model of the foot-ankle system exposed to vertical vibration from 10 to 60 Hz with varying centre of pressure conditions.

Modelling the foot-ankle system (FAS) while exposed to foot-transmitted vibration (FTV) is essential for designing inhibition methods to prevent the effects of vibration-induced white-foot. K-means analysis was conducted on a data set containing vibration transmissibility from the floor to 24 anatomical locations on the right foot of 21 participants. The K-means analysis found three locations to be sufficient for summarising the FTV response. A three segment, four degrees-of-freedom lumped parameter model of the FAS was designed to model the transmissibility response at three locations when ex

Difference in whole spinal alignment between supine and standing positions in patients with adult spinal deformity using a new comparison method with slot-scanning three-dimensional X-ray imager and computed tomography through digital reconstructed radiography.

BACKGROUND: A precise comparison of supine and standing whole spine alignment in both the coronal and sagittal planes, including the pelvic parameters, has not been reported. Furthermore, previous studies investigated positional differences in the Cobb angle only in young patients with idiopathic scoliosis. The difference in alignment has never been investigated in a population of patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD). In most cases, ASD patients are aware of the symptoms when standing and tend to stoop with back pain, whereas the symptoms disappear when lying on a bed. Therefore, it is i

The Impact of Postures and Moving Directions in Fire Evacuation in a Low-Visibility Environment.

Walking speed is a significant aspect of evacuation efficiency, and this speed varies during fire emergencies due to individual physical abilities. However, in evacuations, it is not always possible to keep an upright posture, hence atypical postures, such as stoop walking or crawling, may be required for survival. In this study, a novel 3D passive vision-aided inertial system (3D PVINS) for indoor positioning was used to track the movement of 20 volunteers during an evacuation in a low visibility environment. Participants' walking speeds using trunk flexion, trunk-knee flexion, and upright po

Obese Occupant Response in Reclined and Upright Seated Postures in Frontal Impacts.

The American population is getting heavier and automated vehicles will accommodate unconventional postures. While studies replicating mid-size and upright fore-aft seated occupants are numerous, experiments with post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) with obese and reclined occupants are sparse. The objective of this study was to compare the kinematics of the head-neck, torso and pelvis, and document injuries and injury patterns in frontal impacts. Six PMHS with a mean body mass index of 38.2 ± 5.3 kg/m2 were equally divided between upright and reclined groups (seatback: 23°, 45°), restrained by a
