Detection of icaA, icaD genes and biofilm production by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from urinary tract catheterized patients.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococci are a common cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The present study evaluated biofilm forming capacity and the presence of both icaA and icaD genes among staphylococci strains isolated from patients undergoing ureteral catheterization. METHODOLOGY: Different bacterial strains were isolated from urine and stents segments collected from 100 patients. Strains were identified by traditional microbiological methods. Stents were examined for biofilm using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Staphylococcal isolates were tested for their ability to produc

Global distribution, antimicrobial resistance, and virulence factors of Staphylococcus epidermidis revealed through population genomics.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus epidermidis, typically regarded as a harmless commensal, has become one of the major causes of nosocomial infections, including ocular, skin, medical device-associated and bloodstream infections. Therefore, we analyze its population structure through genomic analysis integrated with metadata. RESULTS: We performed whole-genome sequencing-based population genomic analyses by integrating 1742 publicly available S. epidermidis genomes (accessed by August 2025) with 94 newly sequenced isolates. Our analyses revealed that S. epidermidis represents a species complex compo

Strain-level genomic analysis of Staphylococcus epidermidis across multiple body sites in healthy females.

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a ubiquitous skin commensal that also colonizes the nasal and oral cavities, as well as the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. Although prior studies have found genetic variation between S. epidermidis from infections and commensal strains, prior studies also have found that individual strains can inhabit multiple sites within an individual. None of these studies, however, have considered urogenital isolates. Here, we collected samples from 76 healthy female participants and performed whole-genome sequencing on 114 S. epidermidis isolates from the skin, nasal ca

Staphylococcus epidermidis in Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Comparative Genomic Study Against Non-AML Isolates.

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients undergoing induction chemotherapy. Staphylococcus epidermidis, typically a skin commensal, is increasingly recognized as a pathogen in these vulnerable individuals. This study investigated whether genomic differences exist between infectious and gastrointestinal colonizing S. epidermidis isolates from AML patients and how these compare to colonizing and infectious isolates from other patient groups and biogeographic sites. We analyzed 114 isolates-44 from AML patients (23 infecti

A synergistic herbal formulation targeting Malassezia furfur and Staphylococcus epidermidis for effective dandruff management.

Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition and the mildest form of seborrheic dermatitis, associated with microbial dysbiosis primarily involving Malassezia furfur and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Conventional anti-dandruff treatments are often limited by recurrence and reliance on synthetic antifungal agents. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a synergistic, oil-based herbal formulation with antimicrobial activity against dandruff-causing microorganisms. The herbal constituent, Eucalyptus citriodora (EC) oil, individually signifies its efficacy against key dandruff-causing microbes, while Cen

Completed genome and emergence scenario of the multidrug-resistant nosocomial pathogen Staphylococcus epidermidis ST215.

BACKGROUND: A multidrug-resistant lineage of Staphylococcus epidermidis named ST215 is a common cause of prosthetic joint infections and other deep surgical site infections in Northern Europe, but is not present elsewhere. The increasing resistance among S. epidermidis strains is a global concern. We used whole-genome sequencing to characterize ST215 from healthcare settings. RESULTS: We completed the genome of a ST215 isolate from a Swedish hospital using short and long reads, resulting in a circular 2,676,787 bp chromosome and a 2,326 bp plasmid. The new ST215 genome was placed in phylogene

Multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis from chronic wounds impair healing in human wound model.

Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) represent one of the most prevalent types of chronic wounds characterised by perturbed microbiome and biofilm-forming bacteria. As one of the most abundant skin-commensal, Staphylococcus epidermidis is known as beneficial for the host, however, some strains can form biofilms and hinder wound healing. In this study, S. epidermidis distribution in VLUs and associated resistome were analysed in ulcer tissue from patients. Virulence of S. epidermidis isolates from VLUs were evaluated by whole genome sequencing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, in vitro biofilm and bin

Concentration-Dependent Global Quantitative Proteome Response of Staphylococcus epidermidis RP62A Biofilms to Subinhibitory Tigecycline.

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a leading cause of biofilm-associated infections on implanted medical devices. During the treatment of an infection, bacterial cells inside biofilms may be exposed to sublethal concentrations of the antimicrobial agents. In the present study, the effect of subinhibitory concentrations of tigecycline (TC) on biofilms formed by S. epidermidis strain RP62A was investigated using a quantitative global proteomic technique. Sublethal concentrations of TC [1/8 (T1) and 1/4 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) (T2)] promoted biofilm production in strain RP62A, but 1/2 M

Staphylococcus epidermidis Sensitizes Perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury in Male but Not Female Mice.

Background:Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most common nosocomial infection and the predominant pathogen in late-onset sepsis in preterm infants. Infection and inflammation are linked to neurological and developmental sequelae and bacterial infections increase the vulnerability of the brain to hypoxia-ischemia (HI). We thus tested the hypothesis that S. epidermidis exacerbates HI neuropathology in neonatal mice. Methods: Male and female C57Bl/6 mice were injected intraperitoneally with sterile saline or 3.5 × 107 colony-forming units of S. epidermidis on postnatal day (PND) 4 and then subjec

Antibacterial activity of free or encapsulated selected phenylpropanoids against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis.

AIMS: Antibacterial activities of phenylpropenes (PPs) (eugenol, isoeugenol, estragole and trans-anethole) and hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) (p-coumaric, caffeic and ferulic acids) were assessed against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Effect of cyclodextrin and liposome encapsulation on the PPs activity was also evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS: All PPs inhibited the bacterial growth in the hundred micromolar range, while HCAs did not, as determined by broth macrodilution. Anethole and estragole showed a higher efficiency than eugenol and isoeugenol, and E. coli was more suscept

Genotypic and phenotypic changes of Staphylococcus epidermidis during relapse episodes in prosthetic joint infections.

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a coagulase-negative bacterium capable of causing recurrent relapses in prosthetic joint infection (PJI). The aim of this study was to determine if Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates from patients with recurrent relapses of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) changed genotypically (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) pattern analysis and genes involved in biofilm formation) and phenotypically (antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation) during the different episodes. Four patients with PJI recurrent relapses were evaluated clinically and microbiologically. Geno

Non-biofilm-forming commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates produce biofilm in the presence of trypsin.

Epidemiological studies comparing clinical and commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates suggest that biofilm formation is a discriminant biomarker. A study showed that four non-biofilm-forming clinical S. epidermidis isolates could form an induced biofilm by trypsin treatment, suggesting that S. epidermidis can form biofilms in a protease-independent way and in a trypsin-induced way. In this study, the trypsin capacity to induce biofilm formation was evaluated in non-biofilm-forming S. epidermidis isolates (n = 133) in order to support this mechanism and to establish the importance of tot

Different Genotypes of Adhesion Operon Genes in Staphylococcus epidermidis Isolates From Various Ocular Infections.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus epidermidis is one of the common causes of bacterial keratitis and post-operation infections. One of the most important virulence factors of S. epidermidis is biofilm formation. Poly-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG) production is critical for biofilm formation in S. epidermidis. The intercellular adhesion (ica) operon is formed by icaA, icaD, icaB, and icaC genes, which participate in the biosynthesis of PNAG. Strains of S. epidermidis from different infections show different genotypes in relation to adhesion operon genes. Therefore, regarding the fact that the pathogenic

Susceptibility to chlorhexidine amongst multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis from bloodstream infections.

The emergence of Staphylococcus isolates with reduced susceptibility to chlorhexidine is being increasingly reported. We present an update to a previous report showing the continuing efficacy of chlorhexidine-based infection control measures against Staphylococcus aureus over 6 years. In this study, qacA/B genes were screened in Staphylococcus isolates collected over another 6 years in the same intensive care unit in Scotland where chlorhexidine baths form an essential component of long-term control of nosocomial infections. Consistent with our previous study, we report minimal presence of qac

Antibiotic susceptibility among Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from prosthetic joint infections, with focus on doxycycline.

In recent years, coagulase-negative staphylococci such as Staphylococcus epidermidis have gained importance as nosocomial pathogens, especially in immunocompromised patients and prosthetic joint infections (PJIs). These infections are often long lasting and difficult to treat due to the production of bacterial biofilm and the transformation of the bacteria into a stationary growth phase. Rifampicin is able to penetrate the biofilm, but to reduce the risk of development of rifampicin resistance it should be used in combination with an additional antibiotic. In this study we used Etest to invest

Antimicrobial resistance and population structure of Staphylococcus epidermidis recovered from pig farms in Belgium.

Pigs are known to harbour a variety of staphylococcal bacteria, including Staphylococcus epidermidis, in the upper respiratory tract. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence, genetic diversity, virulence and antimicrobial resistance of S. epidermidis in healthy pigs, as well as to identify the potential role of pigs as a reservoir of zoonotic infection. The overall prevalence of S. epidermidis carriage was 28%, with approximately half of the pigs tested (13.5%) carrying methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE). Some isolates belonged to multilocus sequence types, associ

Pyogranulomatous pneumonias due to Nocardia asteroides and Staphylococcus epidermidis in two koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus).

Pyogranulomatous pneumonia was detected in two koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus). Nocardia asteroides was isolated from one koala with extensive pneumonia, pleurisy and splenitis. Staphylococcus epidermidis was isolated from a second koala with pneumonia restricted to the left cranial lobe. Both koalas were in poor condition and had underlying urogenital disease. It was concluded that each organism had acted as an opportunistic pathogen in its compromised host.

Staphylococcus epidermidis causing prosthetic valve endocarditis: microbiologic and clinical observations as guides to therapy.

Seventy-five episodes of prosthetic valve endocarditis from Staphylococcus epidermidis were studied retrospectively. Methicillin-resistant isolates caused 53 (87%) of 61 infections occurring within 1 year of surgery but only two of the nine after 1 year (p less than 0.001). Resistance to methicillin was heterogeneic and extended to the cephalosporins. Of 55 isolates, 43 (78%) were susceptible to gentamicin and all to vancomycin and rifampin. In 55 patients, prosthetic valve endocarditis was complicated by tissue invasion or valve dysfunction. Among these 55 patients, 30 of the 32 who were cure
