Dissociable neural correlates of stereotypes and other forms of semantic knowledge.

Semantic knowledge refers to the information that people have about categories of objects and living things. Social psychologists have long debated whether the information that perceivers have about categories of people--i.e. stereotypes--may be a unique form of semantics. Here, we examine this question against well-established findings regarding the neural basis of semantics, which suggest that two brain regions--left inferior frontal gyrus and inferotemporal cortex--are critical for general semantic knowledge. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, participants answered questions abou

The energetic costs of stereotyped behavior in the paper wasp, Polistes dominulus.

Polistes wasps engage in many behavioral interactions. Although there has been debate over the meaning of these interactions, these stereotypical behaviors can be used to determine a colony's linear dominance hierarchy. Due to the implicit relationship between behavioral and reproductive dominance, behavioral interactions are commonly used to distinguish the reproductively dominant alpha foundress from the beta foundress. It has been suggested that in order to maintain reproductive control, the alpha foundress is forced to remain at a physiologically constrained activity limit. This, in turn,

Housing and husbandry conditions affect stereotypic behaviour in laboratory gerbils.

An artificial burrow was developed which fits into standard laboratory cages and significantly reduces stereotypic digging in gerbils. Also, the causes of bar-chewing were assessed experimentally. Neither the lack of gnawing material, nor the spatial proximity of cage-lid bars and food in the hopper nor the routine husbandry procedure of transferring juvenile gerbils to a fresh cage, but premature separation of juvenile gerbils from their parents before the birth of younger siblings significantly increased bar-chewing.

A stereotypic "elbowing" movement, a possible new primitive reflex in newborns.

The primitive reflexes are brainstem-mediated and play various roles in the child's psychomotor development. The objective of the current study is to describe a new pattern of primitive reflex, noticed in 52 of 81 randomly chosen newborns and young infants during pressing of the subcostal region. Some of them reacted by three-phase stereotypic movement as follows: phase 1: quick adduction of upper arm with flexion of the forearm, with elbow directed toward the site of stimuli, touching the stimulated area; phase 2: abduction and retroflexion of upper arm with the movement of removing the stimu

Stereotypic behavior of a female Asiatic elephant (Elephas maximus) in a zoo.

This study recorded daytime behavior of a female Asiatic elephant at the Municipal Zoo, Wroclaw, Poland, in both an indoor pen and an outdoor paddock as continuous scan sampling for 140 hr, over 35 days in 1 year. Stereotypic sequences involved bouts of highly repetitive stereotypic movements and much more variable interbout behavior. The study found both stereotypic movements, nodding and body (corpus) swaying, were asymmetric, accompanied by protraction of the right hind leg and to-and-fro swinging of the trunk. The elephant spent 52% of the daytime in stereotypic movements, 3.5 times the le

Prevalence of stereotypical responses to mistuned complex tones in the inferior colliculus.

The human auditory system has an exceptional ability to separate competing sounds, but the neural mechanisms that underlie this ability are not understood. Responses of inferior colliculus (IC) neurons to "mistuned" complex tones were measured to investigate possible neural mechanisms for spectral segregation. A mistuned tone is a harmonic complex tone in which the frequency of one component has been changed; that component may be heard as a separate sound source, suggesting that the mistuned tone engages the same mechanisms that contribute to the segregation of natural sounds. In this study,

Reactions to counterstereotypic behavior: the role of backlash in cultural stereotype maintenance.

Social and economic sanctions for counterstereotypical behavior have been termed the backlash effect. The authors present a model of the role of backlash in cultural stereotype maintenance from the standpoint of both perceivers and actors. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants lost a competition to either atypical or typical men or women and subsequently showed greater tendency to sabotage deviants. Moreover, undermining deviants was associated with increased self-esteem, suggesting that backlash rewards perceivers psychologically. Experiment 3 showed that gender deviants who feared backlash re

Analysis of response allocation in individuals with multiple forms of stereotyped behavior.

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate response allocation of stereotypy during free-operant and restricted-operant conditions. Five children with autism or related developmental disabilities participated in at least one and up to three of the experiments. In Experiment 1, the stereotypic response that emerged as most probable during a free-operant phase was restricted, and response allocation was again evaluated. The results for 3 participants showed that restricting the high-probability response was correlated with covarying reductions in a nontargeted stereotypy. In Experiment 2, the

How psychiatric patients perceive the public's stereotype of mental illness.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that the general public has devaluating attitudes towards psychiatric patients. In order to avoid rejection, many of these patients develop coping strategies, such as withdrawal and concealing their treatment history. These efforts are in themselves stressing, which might have negative consequences for the course of the disorder. It is not clear, however, how many and which patients do actually perceive the public's stereotype as threatening and, therefore, expect rejection. METHOD: Ninety psychiatric patients and a sample of 1042 persons of the Austrian gen

Collateral effects of response blocking during the treatment of stereotypic behavior.

The collateral effects of response blocking were evaluated while treating stereotypic behavior in a woman diagnosed with autism. Blocking stereotypic behavior (head and tooth capping) was associated with decreases in leisure-item interaction and increases in another stereotypic response (hand wringing). Results suggested that the reduction in item interaction was due to adventitious punishment. Prompts to access an alternative source of reinforcement attenuated the side effects somewhat, but results suggested that the undesirable effects of response blocking may be fairly durable.

The effect of hand splints on stereotypic hand behavior in Rett's syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of hand splints and one elbow restraint on persistent stereotypic hand movements of four girls with Rett's syndrome. Among the most characteristic features of Rett's syndrome are stereotypic hand wringing and loss of previously acquired functional hand skills. Hand splints and one elbow restraint were used in this study. The subject's stereotypic hand behavior and functional hand use were calculated from five-minute segmental video tape recordings. The study consisted of three phases: baseline, intervention, and withdrawal. All subjects demon

The effects of age-stereotype priming on the memory performance of older adults.

The effects of age-stereotype priming on the memory performance of older adults were investigated through a conceptual replication and extension of Levy's (1996. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 71, 1092-1107) study. Sixty young and 60 older adults were subliminally primed with a positive age stereotype, a negative age stereotype, or neutral primes. Memory performance on two tasks (a photo recall task and a dot location task) was measured before and after the priming intervention. Although the study does not provide unequivocal support for Levy's (1996) findings, results did show

Looking beyond stereotypes: exploring variations among crack smokers.

Since the onset of the crack epidemic in the U.S. in the 1980s, the social and health consequences to the drug's users from their perspective has received limited attention. This exploratory study was designed to explore heterogeneity among crack users. Based on in-depth interviews with 22 active crack users in Atlanta, Georgia, variations among them were explored. Data analysis involved the constant comparison method as part of the grounded theory approach. A typology was derived that describes four subsets of users. The two most salient dimensions of the typology are the level of protective

Opiate sensitivity test in patients with stereotypic movement disorder and trichotillomania.

Preliminary data about the therapeutic effect of opiate receptor manipulation in self-injurious behavior (SIB) suggest that endogenous opioid mechanisms may have a pathophysiological role in that condition and their involvement may be dependent on the severity of the SIB. The aim of this study was to use fentanyl-induced prolactin response as an opiate receptor sensitivity test in patients with stereotypic movement disorder (SMD) manifesting SIB (skin picking). Healthy volunteers and trichotillomanic patients were enrolled as comparison subjects. Individuals with trichotillomania (TTM) manifes

Effects of affect, stereotype consistency, and valence of behavior on causal attributions.

The authors examined 3 hypotheses about the effects of 2 positive and 2 negative affects on causal attributions. On the basis of cognitive appraisal theories of emotion, they predicted that the grateful and angry participants would attribute causality for like-valenced behaviors to the target more strongly than would the happy and sad participants, respectively. Following an affect-induction procedure, 229 Anglo-American participants read a description of an African American target whose behavior was stereotype consistent or stereotype inconsistent and positive or negative in valence. As predi

Ovarian hormones modulate cocaine-induced locomotor and stereotypic activity.

Interactions between ovarian hormones and cocaine may underlie gender and estrous cycle differences in cocaine-induced behavioral and neurochemical alterations. The aim of this study was to further understand how ovarian hormones modulate cocaine-induced behavioral alterations. Ovariectomized rats received acute or chronic saline or cocaine (15 mg/kg i.p.) administration and were further subdivided into one of four hormone-treatment conditions: cholesterol (vehicle-control), estrogen, progesterone, or estrogen + progesterone. Overall, acute and chronic cocaine administration increased all loco

Early development of stereotyped and self-injurious behaviors: I. Incidence.

From five programs with 457 eligible children, 39 children younger than 40 months who had developmental disabilities were studied. Video sampling, observation notes, parent reports, staff reports, and clinical records were the data sources. Twenty-one children, or 4.6% of the total number in the program, exhibited SIBs. Virtually all children in the sample who were motorically capable of it showed body-rocking in at least one position. The SIBs were directed mainly toward the head, and body-rocking occurred mainly in four-point and seated position.

On the relation between object manipulation and stereotypic self-injurious behavior.

Results from a number of studies have shown an inverse relationship between stereotypic behavior and object manipulation. The purposes of this study were to determine whether techniques similar to those used previously (prompting and reinforcement) would be effective in increasing object manipulation under both prompted and unprompted conditions, and to ascertain whether increases in object manipulation would result in decreases in stereotypic self-injurious behavior (SIB). Two individuals with developmental disabilities who engaged in SIB maintained by automatic reinforcement participated. Re

Stereotyped behavior: effects of d-amphetamine and methylphenidate in the young rat.

The proclivity of d-amphetamine and methylphenidate to induce perseverative motoric and vocal side effects detracts from the clinical efficacy of these stimulants in the treatment of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In an attempt to develop a model for these deleterious treatment effects, this study explored the behavioral influences exerted by d-amphetamine and methylphenidate in the young laboratory rat. This experiment revealed that doses of these stimulants that typically induce stereotypy provoke diverging behavioral profiles: while animals given 5 mg/kg d-amphetamine exhi

Association between stereotypic behavior and polydipsia in chronic schizophrenic patients.

We assessed temporal associations between polydipsia and motor stereotypies in chronic schizophrenia. Subjects included: (a) a polydipsic patient with marked stereotypies; (b) a polydipsic patient with no history of stereotypy; (c) a nonpolydipsic patient. Stereotyped grooming and pacing were significantly associated with drinking for polydipsic patients only (polydipsic patients evidenced a 87% and 66% concordance between excessive grooming and drinking versus 12% in the control). Our findings provide the first empirical demonstration that polydipsia is temporally associated with other repeti
