The effect of preoperative planning method on recommended tibial tuberosity advancement cage size.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if use of various commonly practiced tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) preoperative planning methods leads to variable TTA cage size recommendations. STUDY DESIGN: Radiographic study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 14) with naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament disease. METHODS: TTA was planned by a single observer on mediolateral stifle radiographs of each dog using 2 sets of tibial plateau landmarks (anatomic [A] vs. femorotibial common tangent [T]) and 2 advancement measurement techniques (transparent overlay [O] vs. simulated TTA using imaging software [S]) for 4 d

Cyclogram analysis of canine gait: quantifying inter-joint coordination and clinical utility in rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Cyclograms, or joint angle-angle plots, provide an intuitive representation of inter-joint coordination, yet they remain underused in canine rehabilitation. This study established sagittal-plane hindlimb cyclograms in dogs and evaluated the absolute enclosed cyclogram area (A_abs, deg²) as a reproducible and clinically interpretable index of coordination. METHODS: Eight clinically healthy Beagles were recorded during treadmill walking, and hip-stifle and tarsus-stifle cyclograms were generated from 10 consecutive gait cycles per dog. A_abs was calculated using a polygonization-b

Long-term outcome and progression of osteoarthritis in uncomplicated cases of cranial cruciate ligament rupture treated by tibial plateau leveling osteotomy in dogs.

The object of this study is to evaluate the long-term outcome of hind limb weight-bearing function and progression of stifle osteoarthritis (OA) after tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO). Groups were classified by the degree of cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) damage and presence or absence of medial meniscus damage as macroscopically evaluated during surgery. Weight-bearing function was assessed via the peak vertical force (PVF), and OA progression was assessed via the radiographic OA score (OAS) preoperatively and 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months postoperatively. In all stifles, PVF w

Radiographic risk factors for contralateral rupture in dogs with unilateral cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

BACKGROUND: Complete cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CR) is a common cause of pelvic limb lameness in dogs. Dogs with unilateral CR often develop contralateral CR over time. Although radiographic signs of contralateral stifle joint osteoarthritis (OA) influence risk of subsequent contralateral CR, this risk has not been studied in detail. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a retrospective longitudinal cohort study of client-owned dogs with unilateral CR to determine how severity of radiographic stifle synovial effusion and osteophytosis influence risk of contralateral CR over tim

Ex vivo biomechanical investigations of combined extra- and intracapsular stabilization in canines with cranial cruciate ligament deficiency.

Intracapsular reconstruction (ICR) has long been recommended as a treatment for cranial cruciate ligament deficiency (CCLD) in dogs, but it has fallen out of favor due to its inferior long-term functional outcomes. These outcomes may be attributed to the poor stiffness and strength of the graft in the early period before ligamentization is completed. Additional placement of extracapsular sutures to mechanically protect the graft during the ligamentization process may be a viable method to address this problem. However, the biomechanical effect of this combined surgical approach remains unknown

Clinical results of surgical correction of medial luxation of the patella in dogs.

Thirty-four dogs that had surgical correction of medial patellar luxation (MPL) in 52 stifle joints were examined after a minimum follow-up period of 1 year (median, 3.6 years). The dogs were divided into the following three groups depending on their age at the time of surgery: group 1, 3 to 6 months; group 2, 8 to 20 months; and group 3, 2.2 to 12 years. Two of the dogs in group 3 had ruptured their cranial cruciate ligament in addition to having MPL. The results were based on a clinical assessment of the animal's gait, and physical and radiographic examination of the stifle joints. Six of se

Three-dimensional ultrasonographic assessment of the cranial cruciate ligament in medium- to large-sized canine cadavers: A feasibility study.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) rupture is a common cause of stifle instability and pelvic limb lameness in dogs. Although complete ruptures are often suspected based on clinical examination, assessment of the CrCL remains challenging using non-invasive conventional imaging modalities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of three-dimensional ultrasonography (3D-US) for visualization and exploratory measurement of the CrCL in medium- to large-sized canine cadavers. An observational descriptive study was conducted on 17 adult dog cadavers (34 stifle joints) with no history of

A new species of Athelges (Crustacea, Isopoda, Epicaridea, Bopyridae) from Japan, with morphological and DNA barcode data.

This case study presents two female dwarf zebu calves with permanent bilateral flexion of the stifle joint secondary to bilateral congenital lateral patellar luxation. The patella could be manually repositioned bilaterally in the first calf (14 days old), but re-luxated immediately with release of manual pressure (luxation grade III). In the second calf (28 days old) both patellae were permanently luxated laterally (grade IV). The right and left stifles of each calf were operated in a staged procedure with approximately 14 days between surgery of the two sides. While a lateral release and a me

Infrared thermography as a diagnostic tool to detect cranial cruciate ligament deficiency in dogs.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease is the leading cause of canine lameness. Diagnosis is based on physical examination and diagnostic imaging findings. Limitations of diagnostic modalities, including patient temperament, cost, availability, and need for general anesthesia, preclude their use for many patients. Infrared thermography is an easy, non-invasive diagnostic screening technique with use in both human and veterinary musculoskeletal conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the utility of infrared thermography to diagnose CCL disease in a large population of client

Management of a proximal pelvic limb skin laceration in a dog using a skin flap and an external fixator.

A nine-year-old, spayed female crossbred dog sustained a traumatic skin lesion to the right proximal pelvic limb, extending to the extensor surface of the stifle. Surgical management of the wound included primary closure using a body skin flap fashioned from the right caudolateral abdominal wall. To achieve closure and prevent tension on the wound, the coxofemoral and stifle joints on the affected side needed to be immobilised in flexion. Flexion immobilisation of the stifle was achieved using the anatomical principle of muscle reciprocation. The ipsilateral tarsal joint was immobilised in fle

Apparent primary ossification of the menisci in a dog.

A 2-year-old Collie was examined after it developed acute lameness in the right hind limb. Palpation of the right stifle elicited signs of pain, but a cranial drawer sign could not be elicited during palpation of the joint. Radiography revealed mineralized opacities in the craniolateral and caudal portions of the right stifle joint. Exploratory arthrotomy of the right stifle joint revealed a firm mass in the cranial horn of the lateral meniscus, which was characterized as osseous metaplasia in the cranial and caudal menisceal horns on histologic examination. Other abnormalities were not identi
