Regulation of seed germination and seedling growth by chemical signals from burning vegetation.

It is well known that burning of vegetation stimulates new plant growth and landscape regeneration. The discovery that char and smoke from such fires promote seed germination in many species indicates the presence of chemical stimulants. Nitrogen oxides stimulate seed germination, but their importance in post-fire germination has been questioned. Cyanohydrins have been recently identified in aqueous smoke solutions and shown to stimulate germination of some species through the slow release of cyanide. However, the most information is available for karrikins, a family of butenolides related to

Convergence properties of solitary tract neurones driven synaptically by cardiac vagal afferents in the mouse.

1. Cardiac vagal receptors are chemically and/or mechanically sensitive but it is unknown if this information is preserved centrally within the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). The present study had two aims: first, to investigate qualitatively whether both mechanically and chemically sensitive cardiac vagal encoding were preserved within the NTS, and second, to determine the patterns of convergence from other cardiorespiratory afferents to NTS neurones receiving cardiac vagal inputs. 2. The extracellular activity of single NTS neurones was investigated during stimulation of both chemicall

[Treatment of giant vulvar condylomata acuminata combining CO2 laser and electrosurgery].

Since no antiviral treatment exists for human papilloma viruses (HPV), the clinician's role is to treat all detectable lesions in order to help the patient's immune system fight the virus and to prevent transmission by contact with lesions. HPV-associated lesions have been treated by a wide range of modalities, which may be divided into chemical, surgical and immunity-stimulating methods. We treated patients with large vulva lesions with Electrosurgery in combination with laser CO2 vaporization. HPV-associated lesions have been treated by a wide range of modalities, which may be divided into c

Further studies of periodic miniature response in squid giant axons.

Electric responses of extremely small amplitudes (1-30 muV peak-to-peak) repeating with more-or-less definite periodicity could be induced by a variety of chemical stimulants applied to squid giant axons either extracellularly or intracellularly. The chemical stimulants studied include allethrin, aminopyridines, N-bromosuccinimide, dimethylamino-pyridine, glutaraldehyde, osmium tetroxide, parachloromercuribenzoate, rose bengal, scorpion venoms and veratridine. With several mild stimulants, it was possible to evoke periodic miniature responses unaccompanied by a fall in the resting membrane pot

Lasers and other thermal stimulators for activation of skin nociceptors in humans.

Pain can be induced by thermal, chemical, and mechanical stimulation in animals and man. Of the thermal stimulation modalities, heat is the most commonly used, as a variety of reliable stimulation techniques are available. Heat is a natural stimulus modality to evoke pain, and it has been used to study animal nociception and human pain perception for (a) examining the mechanisms of tissue injury and sensitisation and (b) quantifying the therapeutic effects of pharmacological, physical, and psychological interventions. This paper summarises the current understanding of the physiology and psycho

Cross-linking of immunoglobulin E-receptor complexes induces their interaction with the cytoskeleton of rat basophilic leukemia cells.

Bridging of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-receptor complexes on rat basophilic leukemia cells by polyclonal anti-IgE antibodies induces a detergent-resistant association of these complexes with the cellular cytoskeleton. In dose-response curves the extent of the cytoskeletal association appears to follow the extent of bridging, continuing to increase beyond where stimulated degranulation is maximal. This stable association is maintained after the aggregated IgE-receptor complexes have been internalized by the cell. Multivalent antigen and trimeric IgE cause less extensive receptor cross-linking than

Potentiation of acoustic-trauma-induced audiogenic seizure susceptibility by salicylates in mice.

Combined exposure to noise and salicylates was found to produce greater acoustic trauma induced audiogenic seizure risk than exposure to the noise alone. The result suggests that salicylates could make the mouse cochlea more vulnerable to the traumatic action of noise.

[Vagal control of larynx resistance to the air flow (author's transl)].

Air flow larynx resistance changes have been recorded in dogs after electrical stimulation and lesion of the recurrent and vagus cervicalis nerves respectively. Experiments were carried out with glottis in situ and isolated. The effects of the administration of athropine i.v. (0.3 mg/kg) were also studied. Air flow larynx resistance decreased after secting the right recurrent nerves as well as after athropine administration. Electrical stimulation of the central end of the right vagus nerve produced a complex response characterized by an initial apnaea followed by a larynx resistance decrease.

[Thinking on the classification of non-invasive brain stimulation as neuromodulation technique].

Neuromodulation techniques have gradually evolved from electrical or chemical methods to various physical stimulation techniques including electricity, magnetism, sound, light, heat, and more. However, the clinical efficacy and mechanisms of each stimulation technique or paradigm vary greatly. To facilitate the understanding of the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of different neuromodulation techniques, combined with current clinical practice, the author takes the classification of non-invasive transcranial electrical stimulation as an example and proposes the idea of using energy magnitude

Protective and defensive airway reflexes in premature infants.

The incidence of respiratory reactions to stimulation of the nasal and propharyngeal mucose was studied in 44 newborn premature infants. The inhalation of menthol fumes or the administration of drops of Mukoseptonex to the nasal mucosa caused transient respiratory arrest or a drop in the respiration rate. The heart rate rose during chemical stimulation of the nasal mucosa, possibly in association with a general arousal reaction. Mechanical stimulation of the nasal mucosal with a nylon fibre elicited an expulsive reaction in 95% of the cases. As distinct from experimental animals, sneezing was

Classification, pharmacology, and side-effects of common laxatives.

No definition of the term laxative is satisfactory since their mode of actions affects multiple mechanisms, absorption/secretion and motor activity. Laxatives are very heterogeneous chemically. They act by either holding water inside the bowel lumen (dietary fibre, osmotic laxatives), by inhibition of water absorption or stimulation of secretion (stimulant laxatives), or by stimulation of colonic motility (stimulant laxatives, 5HT4 agonists). Most laxatives have side-effects but these are usually mild.

The Nasonov gland pheromone as a potential source of death cue in Apis cerana.

The ability to detect and remove dead adult bees is an essential part of honeybee colony fitness that prevents the spread of pathogens. Fatty acid olfactory cues stimulate undertaking behavior among different social species within Hymenoptera, but the chemicals responsible for the death cue in Apis cerana have not yet been identified. We explored the Nasonov gland as a potential source of these chemicals in A. cerana. Gas chromatography indicated that unlike A. mellifera, the A. cerana Nasonov gland does not contain any volatile terpenes, only fatty acids. As a bioassay, dead honeybees were ri

Design and construction of a uniaxial cell stretcher.

In vitro mechanical cell stimulators are used for the study of the effect of mechanical stimulation on anchorage-dependent cells. We developed a new mechanical cell stimulator, which uses stepper motor technology and computer control to achieve a high degree of accuracy and repeatability. This device also uses high-performance plastic components that have been shown to be noncytotoxic, dimensionally stable, and resistant to chemical degradation from common culture laboratory chemicals. We show that treatment with glow discharge for 25 s at 20 mA is sufficient to modify the surface of the rubbe

Salmonid Pituitary Cells as a Test System for Identifying Endocrine-Disrupting Compounds.

The pituitary gland is a central regulator of reproduction, producing two gonadotropins, follicle-stimulating hormone (Fsh) and luteinizing hormone (Lh), which regulate gonadal development, sex steroid synthesis, and gamete maturation. The present study sought to optimize an in vitro test system using pituitary cells isolated from previtellogenic female coho salmon and rainbow trout, focusing on fshb and lhb subunit gene expression. Initially, we optimized culture conditions for duration and benefits of culturing with and without addition of endogenous sex steroids (17β-estradiol [E2] or 11-ke

Effects of nitric oxide synthase blockade on dorsal vagal stimulation-induced pancreatic insulin secretion.

We and others have previously shown that the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) is involved in regulation of pancreatic exocrine secretion. Many pancreatic preganglionic neurons within the DMV are inhibited by pancreatic secretagogues suggesting that an inhibitory pathway may participate in the control of pancreatic exocrine secretion. Accordingly, the present study examined whether chemical stimulation of the DMV activates the endocrine pancreas and whether an inhibitory pathway is involved in this response. All experiments were conducted in overnight fasted isoflurane/urethane-anestheti

Effects of hypoxia and hypercapnia on geniohyoid contractility and endurance.

Sleep apnea and other respiratory diseases produce hypoxemia and hypercapnia, factors that adversely affect skeletal muscle performance. To examine the effects of these chemical alterations on force production by an upper airway dilator muscle, the contractile and endurance characteristics of the geniohyoid muscle were examined in situ during severe hypoxia (arterial PO2 less than 40 Torr), mild hypoxia (PO2 45-65 Torr), and hypercapnia (PCO2 55-80 Torr) and compared with hyperoxic-normocapnic conditions in anesthetized cats. Muscles were studied at optimal length, and contractile force was as

[Mechanisms of action of class III anti-arrhythmia agents].

Vaughan-Williams class III antiarrhythmic agents act mainly by prolonging the duration of the cardiac action potential and, thus, the refractory period. This effect may be obtained: 1) by increasing the inward sodium or calcium currents, which may lead to an intracellular calcium overload and induce a very proarrhythmic situation, or 2) by decreasing the outward potassium currents, the objective of the new class III antiarrhythmic drugs under development. They selectively block one or several potassium channels regulated by the membrane potential (transient outward current Ito, delayed rectify

[Metabolic effect of coffee and caffeine].

Coffee and its most important constituent, caffeine, may not only stimulate the function of many organs but also increase the metabolism in the body. These effects require a higher energy production which is mainly obtained from striated muscles by glycogenolysis and from fat tissue by lipolysis. Sutherland and Butcher were able to demonstrate that these degradation processes are primarily caused by an increase of cyclic 3,5-AMP. - In this connection caffeine and other methylxanthines are of special interest because these compounds also increase the intracellular amount of cyclic 3,5-AMP. This

Several 1,3-disubstituted and 1-substituted derivatives of 5-propionoxy-5-(1-phenylethyl)barbituric acid were synthesized and evaluated for analgesic activity. Three of these compounds, 1,3-bis(methoxymethyl)-5-propionoxy-5-(1-phenylethyl)barbituric acid (2), 1,3-dimethyl-5-propionoxy-5-(1-phenylethyl)barbituric acid (7), and 1-methyl-5-propionoxy-5-(1-phenylethyl)barbituric acid (10), exhibited better oral activity than codeine sulfate.

Metabolic interactions among environmental chemicals and drugs.

It is evident that metabolic interactions can occur among drugs, insecticides, food additives, carcinogenic hydrocarbons, and a variety of environmental chemicals. A common denominator governing these effects is the versatile nature of the liver microsomal enzymes that metabolize chemicals with diverse structures and biological activities, and the fact that these enzymes can be stimulated or inhibited by other chemicals administered simultaneously. The discovery of these particular enzymes in the 1950's laid the groundwork for the current research on metabolic interactions. Such research provi
