The boon and bane of nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) has been known since the end of the eighteenth century. Today, N2O plays a huge role as a greenhouse gas and an ozone-depleting stratospheric molecule. The main sources of anthropogenic N2O emissions are agriculture, fuel combustion, wastewater treatment, and various industrial processes. By contrast, the contribution of medical N2O to the greenhouse effect appears to be small. The recreational and medical uses of N2O gradually diverged over time. N2O has analgesic and anesthetic effects, making it widely used in modern dentistry and surgery. New research has also begun stu

Dual Carbon-Chlorine Isotope Analysis Indicates Distinct Anaerobic Dichloromethane Degradation Pathways in Two Members of Peptococcaceae.

Dichloromethane (DCM) is a probable human carcinogen and frequent groundwater contaminant and contributes to stratospheric ozone layer depletion. DCM is degraded by aerobes harboring glutathione-dependent DCM dehalogenases; however, DCM contamination occurs in oxygen-deprived environments, and much less is known about anaerobic DCM metabolism. Some members of the Peptococcaceae family convert DCM to environmentally benign products including acetate, formate, hydrogen (H2), and inorganic chloride under strictly anoxic conditions. The current study applied stable carbon and chlorine isotope frac

Dietary feeding of silibinin prevents early biomarkers of UVB radiation-induced carcinogenesis in SKH-1 hairless mouse epidermis.

Solar radiation is the causal etiologic factor in the development of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer leads to an increase in ambient UV radiation loads, which are expected to further raise skin cancer incidence in many temperate parts of the world, including the United States, suggesting that skin cancer chemopreventive approaches via biomarker efficacy studies or vice versa are highly warranted. Based on our recent study reporting strong efficacy of silibinin against photocarcinogenesis, we assessed here the protective effects of its dietary feeding

The effects of increased exposure time to UV-B radiation on germination and seedling development of Anatolian black pine seeds.

Exhaustion of stratospheric ozone found at a height of 10-30 km around the world causes the solar UV-B (280-320 nm) radiation to penetrate through the atmosphere more, and thus to reach the Earth's surface quicker. The protective ozone layer gets damaged by human activities constantly, and the increasing levels of UV radiation present threats to all life forms, plants, animals, and even microorganisms. However, the studies conducted on the effects of UV radiation on plants, and especially forest trees, are rather limited. In this study, it was aimed to identify the effects of UV-B radiation on

Deriving Global OH Abundance and Atmospheric Lifetimes for Long-Lived Gases: A Search for CH3CCl3 Alternatives.

An accurate estimate of global hydroxyl radical (OH) abundance is important for projections of air quality, climate, and stratospheric ozone recovery. As the atmospheric mixing ratios of methyl chloroform (CH3CCl3) (MCF), the commonly used OH reference gas, approaches zero, it is important to find alternative approaches to infer atmospheric OH abundance and variability. The lack of global bottom-up emission inventories is the primary obstacle in choosing a MCF alternative. We illustrate that global emissions of long-lived trace gases can be inferred from their observed mixing ratio differences

Solar ultraviolet and the evolutionary history of cyanobacteria.

On the basis of photobiological, evolutionary, paleontological, paleoenvironmental and physiological arguments, a time course for the role of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, wavelengths below 400 nm) in the ecology and evolution of cyanobacteria is proposed in which three main periods can be distinguished. An initial stage, before the advent of oxygenic photosynthesis, when high environmental fluxes of UVC (wavelengths below 280 nm) and UVB (280-320 nm) may have depressed the ability of protocyanobacteria to develop large populations or restricted them to UVR refuges. A second stage lasting

Impacts of updated reaction kinetics on the global GEOS-Chem simulation of atmospheric chemistry.

We updated the chemical mechanism of the GEOS-Chem global 3-D model of atmospheric chemistry to include new recommendations from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) chemical kinetics Data Evaluation 19-5 and from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and to balance carbon and nitrogen. We examined the impact of these updates on the GEOS-Chem version 14.0.1 simulation. Notable changes include 11 updates to reactions of reactive nitrogen species, resulting in a 7% net increase in the stratospheric NOx (NO + NO2) burden; an updated CO + OH rate formula leading to a 2.

Kinetics of the Reactions of Chlorinated Very Short-Lived Substances (VSLSs) with Chlorine Atoms.

Chlorinated very short-lived substances (VSLSs), which are not controlled by the Montreal Protocol, are of current concern with regard to recovery of stratospheric ozone. Further study is needed on the temperature dependences of chlorinated VSLSs relevant to atmospheric conditions. Here, the kinetics of chlorinated VSLSs, such as chloroform (CHCl3), dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), dichloroethane (CH2ClCH2Cl), and trichloroethene (C2HCl3) reacting with chlorine atoms, were investigated between 180 and 400 K, expanding the range of temperatures relative to previous studies. CFCs measurements at high altitudes in northern China during 2017-2018: Concentrations and potential emission source regions.

Northern China was simulated as the main contributor to global chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs) that slowed down the recovery of stratospheric ozone layer in most recent studies. An atmospheric campaign was carried out from June 2017 to April 2018 to register the concentrations of typical chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) (i.e., CFC-11, CFC-12, CFC-113, and CFC-114) at the top of Mount Tai, northern China. The mixing ratios of CFC-11 CFC-12, CFC-113, and CFC-114 were 257, 577, 80, and 18 pptv, respectively. These values are similar to the reported data 10 years ago at Mount Tai. CFC concentrations correlate

Sustainability trade-offs in sludge-to-energy systems: a process-resolved assessment of thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment.

Thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) is increasingly integrated into sludge-to-energy systems to enhance energy recovery, yet its environmental performance remains uncertain because most life cycle assessments (LCAs) treat these systems as aggregated units, limiting the representation of process-level interactions and environmental trade-offs. This study evaluates THP at 60, 80, and 120 °C in a sludge-to-energy system by propagating experimentally derived process changes through an integrated framework that combines process modelling, LCA, and techno-economic analysis. THP at 120 °C improved

Atmospheric CCl4 degradation in Antarctic tundra soils and the evaluation on its partial atmospheric lifetime with respect to soil.

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is an anthropogenic gas with a long atmospheric lifetime and can catalyze the destruction of stratospheric ozone. Natural soils are believed to be important and widespread sinks of atmospheric CCl4, although poorly characterized due to a limited number of measurements. In this study, for the first time in situ static-chamber measurements and laboratory-based incubations for CCl4 fluxes were conducted at coastal Antarctic tundra. Results showed that soil in remote Antarctica is also acting as a CCl4 sink, with an average uptake rate of -2.2 ± 0.6 nmol m-2 d-1, which

The influence of photosynthetically active radiation on the effects of ultraviolet-B radiation on Arabidopsis thaliana.

Ultraviolet-B (UVB; 280-320 nm) radiation is a small but biologically significant portion of the solar spectrum reaching the earth's surface. Research interests have been fostered because UVB has been increasing in recent years due to depletion of stratospheric ozone. Ultraviolet-B that penetrates into plant tissue may damage important cellular macromolecules. Although there has been considerable research on the effects of UVB on plants, the influence of the level of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; 400-700 nm) on effects of UVB requires further definition as a prelude to studies of U

Detrimental effects of UV-B radiation in a xeroderma pigmentosum-variant cell line.

DNA polymerase η (pol η), of the Y-family, is well known for its in vitro DNA lesion bypass ability. The most well-characterized lesion bypassed by this polymerase is the cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) caused by ultraviolet (UV) light. Historically, cellular and whole-animal models for this area of research have been conducted using UV-C (λ=100-280 nm) owing to its ability to generate large quantities of CPDs and also the more structurally distorting 6-4 photoproduct. Although UV-C is useful as a laboratory tool, exposure to these wavelengths is generally very low owing to being filtered b

Reactive nitrogen compounds and their influence on human health: an overview.

Nitrogen (N) is a critical component of food security, economy and planetary health. Human production of reactive nitrogen (Nr) via Haber-Bosch process and cultivation-induced biological N2 fixation (BNF) has doubled global N cycling over the last century. The most important beneficial effect of Nr is augmenting global food supplies due to increased crop yields. However, increased circulation of Nr in the environment is responsible for serious human health effects such as methemoglobinemia ("blue baby syndrome") and eutrophication of coastal and inland waters. Furthermore, ammonia (NH3) emissi

Iodine Activation from Iodate Reduction in Aqueous Films via Photocatalyzed and Dark Reactions.

Iodine in the atmosphere destroys ozone and can nucleate particles by formation of iodic acid, HIO3. Recent field observations suggest iodate recycles from particles sustaining significant gas-phase IO radical concentrations (0.06 pptv) in aged stratospheric air, and in elevated dust plumes. However, laboratory evidence for iodine activation from aerosols is currently missing. Here, a series of coated-wall flow tube (CWFT) experiments test for iodine release from thin aqueous films containing iodate. Photocatalyzed reactions were studied using iron(III) citrate (Fe-Cit), Arizona Test Dust (ATD

Perspectives on life cycle analysis of solar technologies with emphasis on production in India.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the solar power industry, business, and supply chain for 2019-2021, and installations are falling behind the mission plan. However, Indian PV manufacturers see it as a chance to engage in solar manufacturing to establish a competitive, sustainable, and robust domestic solar industry instead of import-based installations. Given the country's current environmental concerns, green and sustainable local manufacturing is the only viable alternative. By conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA), this study compared the environmental impacts generated by the five most pr

Are persistent aircraft trails a threat to the environment and health?

According to most scientific studies, media and governments, the white trails that can be seen behind aircraft in flight, corresponding to condensation mixed with engine particulate emissions, only persist under specific atmospheric conditions. They are called condensation trails, and cirrus contrails when they remain for hours to reach several kilometers wide. The fact that they have gradually filled the skies over the last twenty years would be due to the increase in air traffic. However, other official documents link these persistent trails to a weather modification technology called solar

Natural products as photoprotection.

The rise in solar ultraviolet radiation on the earth's surface has led to a depletion of stratospheric ozone over recent decades, thus accelerating the need to protect human skin against the harmful effects of UV radiation such as erythema, edema, hyperpigmentation, photoaging, and skin cancer. There are many different ways to protect skin against UV radiation's harmful effects. The most popular way to reduce the amount of UV radiation penetrating the skin is topical application of sunscreen products that contain UV absorbing or reflecting active molecules. Based on their protection mechanism,

Compound-Specific Stable Carbon Isotope Analysis of Chlorofluorocarbons in Groundwater.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), controlled substances due to their role in stratospheric ozone loss, also occur as dissolved contaminants in groundwaters. Stable carbon isotopic signatures may provide valuable new information on the fate of these compounds as has been seen for other priority hydrocarbon contaminants, but to date no method for extraction and isotopic analysis of dissolved CFCs from groundwaters has been developed. Here we describe a cryogenic purge and trap system coupled to continuous flow compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis mass s

Volatile organic compounds in the unsaturated zone from radioactive wastes.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often comingled with low-level radioactive wastes (LLRW), but little is known about subsurface VOC emanations from LLRW landfills. The current study systematically quantified VOCs associated with LLRW over an 11-yr period at the USGS Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) in southwestern Nevada. Unsaturated-zone gas samples of VOCs were collected by adsorption on resin cartridges and analyzed by thermal desorption and GC/MS. Sixty of 87 VOC method analytes were detected in the 110-m-thick unsaturated zone surrounding a LLRW disposal facility. Chlorofluorocar
