Early Hands-on Surgical Exposure: Outcomes of a Student-led Surgical Externship Program for Preclinical Students.

OBJECTIVE: Early surgical exposure may potentially influence medical students' decision to pursue a surgical career. At our urban, academic medical school, senior medical students developed a Surgical Externship Program (SEP) to provide first-years with hands-on OR experience. This program is a structured 1- to 2-week immersive experience in which first-year students scrubbed into operations, participated in rounds, and engaged with surgical teams under resident and attending supervision. This study evaluates the SEP's impact on surgical interest, OR confidence, and clinical exposure. SETTING

Exploratory Evaluation of a Medical Student-Led Health Literacy Program Among High School Students.

BACKGROUND: Low health literacy is a barrier to positive health behaviors and outcomes among adolescents, especially in marginalized communities. Sustained, youth-centered interventions for high-risk populations are limited. CONTRIBUTIONS TO PRACTICE: We implemented and conducted an exploratory evaluation of a year-long, medical student-led program for ninth- and tenth-grade students at two Detroit public high schools. The program demonstrated the feasibility of interactive school-based health literacy programming and identified practical considerations for future implementation. Using anonym

Family Functioning and Academic Adjustment in Medical Students: Coping Styles as Mediators and Differences in At-Risk Students.

OBJECTIVE: Academic adjustment is essential for medical students facing rigorous academic demands. While individual and instructional factors have been well-studied, the role of family functioning remains underexplored. This study examined the association between family functioning and academic adjustment, explored the mediating role of coping styles, and compared these pathways between at-risk students (those who had failed at least one final examination) and controls. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using validated scales for assessment of academic adjustment, family function

TUM4Health, a holistic student health promotion program. Screening of cardiovascular risk factors in university students.

Cardio Vascular risk prevention in Germany has a gap between the ages of 20 and 30 years. We established a program for risk group identification in students and analyzed the screenings according to the ACCF/AHA Stages and NYHA functional classification. In a cross-sectional design, 596 participants completed a sports medical and motor performance check-up. We found 6% of the female subgroup in an underweight status. Low blood pressure in 5% of the male and 10% of the female group. Elevated blood pressure in 27% of the male and 12% of the female subgroup. According to ACCF/AHA classification, a

Systemized approach to equipping medical students with naloxone: a student-driven initiative to combat the opioid crisis.

BACKGROUND: Naloxone is an effective and safe opioid reversal medication now approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use with or without a prescription. Despite this, naloxone dissemination lags at a time when U.S. opioid-related mortality expands. The authors proposed distributing naloxone to all U.S. medical students using established statewide standing prescription orders for naloxone, eliminating the financial burden of over-the-counter costs on students and streamlining workflow for the pharmacy. By focusing naloxone distribution on medical students, we are able to cap

Student-centered factors influencing inclusion in biomedical majors among first-year undergraduate students.

The ability to maintain a diverse scientific workforce is vital to promoting the US's economic and technological competitiveness. Data have shown disparities in science, mathematics, medical, and engineering programs across each level of education from high school to doctoral studies for students from underrepresented groups (URG). Research suggests that many URG students are pushed out of the biomedical track early in their academic careers, particularly during the first year. Most of these studies focus on well-known indicators, such as science identity and research self-efficacy, to study i

Being a deaf student in a face mask world: Survey data from Italian university students.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, universities made face masks mandatory during face-to-face classes and/or switched to virtual classes. Such situations pose a challenge for students with hearing loss as they generate listening conditions that make speech comprehension difficult. This study aimed to explore the listening difficulties perceived by Italian university students with hearing loss (HL) and typical hearing (TH) as well as their adoption of self-advocacy strategies . We measured listening difficulties as a function of teaching modality (face-to-face and virtual classes) and the ty

Use of adaptive behavior measures and overrepresentation of black students in programs for students with mild mental retardation.

The use of adaptive behavior information for classification and placement of black and white students with mild mental retardation was compared and overrepresentation of black students in special classes was analyzed. Adaptive behavior measures were not used to the same extent as general intelligence tests for either group, despite court decisions and recommendations by authoritative sources. Direct comparisons on general intellectual functioning and several indices of adaptive behavior yielded few differences, suggesting that an equal treatment conception of fairness was achieved despite subs
