Abdominal subcutaneous fat quantification in obese patients from limited field-of-view MRI data.

Different types of adipose tissue can be accurately localized and quantified by tomographic imaging techniques (MRI or CT). One common shortcoming for the abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (ASAT) of obese subjects is the technically restricted imaging field of view (FOV). This work derives equations for the conversion between six surrogate measures and fully segmented ASAT volume and discusses the predictive power of these image-based quantities. Clinical (gender, age, anthropometry) and MRI data (1.5 T, two-point Dixon sequence) of 193 overweight and obese patients (116 female, 77 male) f

Haematoma complicating subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn: a rare complication following therapeutic hypothermia.

A term, large for gestational age male newborn, was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit with meconium aspiration syndrome and severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. The baby was treated with therapeutic hypothermia using a total body cooling blanket. After 48 hours, the baby developed tender, indurated subcutaneous nodules consistent with subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN). The lesions started initially over the back but gradually spread to cover both shoulders, upper arms, chest area and both thighs. On day 19 of life, multiple small nodules on the back softened and coalesced to form

Ultrasonographic evaluation of visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fat tissue before and after bariatric surgery.

Visceral fat is considered a key factor in the development of metabolic syndrome and other pathological conditions and diseases associated with obesity. Therefore, analysis of the dynamics of reducing the amount of abdominal visceral fat is important for evaluating the therapeutic effects of different modalities of obesity treatment, including bariatric surgery. In 53 obese patients visceral and subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue was measured by ultrasonography (US) before and after bariatric surgery, in the period of 1, 3, 6 months. At the same time, standard anthropometric parameters were

A neonate with subcutaneous fat necrosis after passive cooling: does polycythemia have an effect?

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is an inflammatory disorder of adipose tissue. The main risk factors for the development of SCFN are perinatal asphyxia and hypothermia. Presented here is a case of a newborn who developed SCFN in association with polycythemia and hypocalcemia following treatment by passive cooling. Neonates who undergo passive or whole body cooling therapy should be closely monitored for any signs of SCFN.

Mast cells, macrophages, and crown-like structures distinguish subcutaneous from visceral fat in mice.

Obesity is accompanied by adipocyte death and accumulation of macrophages and mast cells in expanding adipose tissues. Considering the differences in biological behavior of fat found in different anatomical locations, we explored the distribution of mast cells, solitary macrophages, and crown-like structures (CLS), the surrogates for dead adipocytes, in subcutaneous and abdominal visceral fat of lean and diet-induced obese C57BL/6 mice. In fat depots of lean mice, mast cells were far less prevalent than solitary macrophages. Subcutaneous fat contained more mast cells, but fewer solitary macrop

Relationship between absorptiometry and ultrasound measurements of abdominal subcutaneous fat tissue in postmenopausal women.

The purpose of this study was to describe the association of abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) as assessed by ultrasound with fat tissue in the abdomen, trunk, and other areas as measured by DXA in 101 postmenopausal Caucasian women (62.5 years; 27.3 kg/m(2); 43.0% body fat). Ultrasound SAT thickness was calculated with electronic calipers positioned at the skin-fat and fat-muscle computer screen interface, at the suprailiac (SUPT) and abdominal (ABDT) sites. Pearson correlation showed significant ( p<0.001) coefficients between SAT by DXA at both ABDT ( r=0.644) and SUPT ( r=0.537).

Visceral and subcutaneous fat attenuation as prognostic indicators of survival in castration resistant prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: While previous studies have examined the link between body fat mass and prognosis in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), limited evidence exists regarding the prognostic role of specific fat characteristics. We aimed to analyze the relationship between body fat characteristics and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients newly diagnosed with CRPC. METHODS: Subcutaneous fat attenuation (SAT-HU) and visceral fat attenuation (VAT-HU) were quantified using Hounsfield units (HU) on computed tomography scans at the time of CRPC diagnosis. Average HU values were

A stacked cavity-backed metamaterial antenna for confined hyperthermia of subcutaneous fat in ISM band.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperthermia has emerged as a versatile modality in oncology, rehabilitation, and aesthetic medicine, yet conventional RF devices often suffer from insufficient penetration and collateral epidermal heating. This study proposes a miniaturized stacked cavity-backed antenna operating in the 2.4-2.5 GHz ISM band for depth-confined heating of facial subcutaneous fat. METHODS: By leveraging the strong dielectric contrast at the skin-fat boundary, the design enhances the normal electric-field component in adipose tissue to promote preferential power deposition without active epidermal

Safety and Efficacy of Pamidronate in Neonatal Hypercalcemia Caused by Subcutaneous Fat Necrosis: A Case Report.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is a panniculitis that develops in fatty areas after fetal or perinatal distress. Prognosis is generally good with complete regression, but it can be complicated by metabolic abnormalities like hypoglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, thrombocytopenia, and also potentially life-threatening hypercalcemia. Treatments have included hydration, furosemide and corticosteroids. These treatments can be prolonged for several days and can have complications such as nephrocalcinosis. Use of bisphosphonates has been rarely reported in newborn. We describe a case

Pamidronate as first-line treatment of hypercalcemia in neonatal subcutaneous fat necrosis: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) can be complicated by severe hypercalcemia, which is frequently asymptomatic. Nephrocalcinosis is associated with hypercalcemia and, in other clinical settings, has been linked to furosemide and glucocorticoid use. First-line bisphosphonate therapy treating hypercalcemia in neonatal SCFN is not well described. OBJECTIVES: To describe the biochemical changes and risk of nephrocalcinosis in infants with hypercalcemia, secondary to neonatal SCFN, treated with initial pamidronate. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of five infants treated with init

Human epicardial adipokine messenger RNAs: comparisons of their expression in substernal, subcutaneous, and omental fat.

We compared the gene expression of inflammatory and other proteins by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction in epicardial, substernal (mediastinal) and subcutaneous sternal, upper abdominal, and leg fat from coronary bypass patients and omental (visceral) fat from extremely obese women undergoing bariatric surgery. We hypothesized that (1) epicardial fat would exhibit higher expression of inflammatory messenger RNAs (mRNAs) than substernal and subcutaneous fat and (2) epicardial mRNAs would be similar to those in omental fat. Epicardial fat was clearly different from substernal fat
