Submandibular salivary gland hypertrophy induced by phenytoin.

A 16-year-old boy with epilepsy developed hypertrophy of the submandibular salivary glands, with high phenytoin (PHT) serum levels. The submandibular salivary glands became normal in 12 days after discontinuation of PHT. Other causes of salivary gland hypertrophy were excluded and we suggest that the hypertrophy was due to PHT.

Aesthetic resection of the submandibular salivary gland.

This paper analyzes some pathologies of the submandibular salivary gland that present a special interest for facial aesthetic surgeons. Even up-to-date techniques to correct the aesthetic deformities of the submandibular and cervical regions can be disappointing when the patient presents an increasing volume or ptosis of the submandibular salivary gland. Sometimes, even though the submandibular gland has not been preoperatively identified, it may become evident postoperatively, compromising the submandibular and cervical contour because the musculocutaneous flaccidity has been corrected and th

Toxic shock syndrome following submandibular gland excision.

Acute toxic shock syndrome (TSS), initially described in association with the use of super absorbent tampons in menstruating women, has complicated a variety of surgical procedures. Recent attention in head and neck surgery has focused on absorbent packing materials, such as those used in postoperative nasal care. It is important to maintain a high index of suspicion in all postoperative patients to fever, hypotension, and erythroderma. We report TSS following submandibular gland excision.

The Efficacy and Safety of Submandibular Transcatheter Perfusion Anesthesia in Submandibular Gland Surgery.

The present study aims to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and effects of the combined use of submandibular transcatheter perfusion with lingual nerve block and subcutaneous infiltration for anesthetic purposes during submandibular gland surgery. A total of 38 patients with benign tumors, who had undergone resection by submandibular gland surgery were randomly divided into 2 groups. Patients in group A were administered with submandibular anesthesia through catheter perfusion, lingual nerve block, and subcutaneous infiltration anesthesia. Patients in the group B were only treated with lingual

[Reactions of the rat submandibular salivary gland to injury of the contralateral gland].

After burn or resection of one submandibular salivary gland the contralateral gland responded by an increase of proliferation. The maximal mitotic index was observed 48 hours after the resection and 72 hours after the burn. Burn of the salivary gland initiated a stable, but weak compensatory hypertrophy of the contralateral gland. Hypertrophy of the gland was accompanied by an increase in the size of the cells and the nuclei whose area enlarged by 10 and 17%, respectively. Resection of the salivary gland caused an increase in the weight of the intact contralateral gland only at the early perio

Sialolithiasis in the Left Submandibular Gland: A Case.

The most common illness affecting the salivary glands is submandibular gland sialoliths. The size of the sialolith and the patient's clinical history mainly influence how this salivary system abnormality is treated. This diagnosis is suggested by a history of salivary gland pain or swelling, particularly during mastication. Palliative therapy combined with conservative therapies, such as the milking of the ducts, can effectively treat small and accessible stones. When a stone or stones are large and inaccessible, surgical therapy should be considered if conservative approaches have not proven

Sialoblastoma of the submandibular gland: a distinct entity?

Sialoblastoma is a rare congenital malignant tumor of the salivary glands. A case of a submandibular sialoblastoma in a 1.5-year-old child is presented. A comparative analysis on 79 pediatric cases reported in the literature suggests a less aggressive behavior for submandibular sialoblastoma in comparison with other sites. Classically, diagnosis is confirmed by open biopsy, but fine-needle aspiration may offer an alternative with reduced morbidity. Expression of AFP and high levels of Ki-67 have been associated with poor prognosis. Whilst early surgical resection with negative margins is widel

Safety of drainless excision of the submandibular gland.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous drains can be associated with several complications, including infection, fistula formation, discomfort and prolonged hospitalization. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of submandibular gland excision without the use of surgical drains. METHODS: We analyzed the surgery time, postoperative complications such as bleeding, facial palsy, seroma, and repeat exploration of wounds and duration of the hospital stay. Excision of the submandibular gland via a transcervical approach was undertaken by two surgeons. Prior to wound closure, the skin fla

Sialolithiasis of the Submandibular Gland: Report of Cases.

Sialolithiasis is the formation of calcific concretions within the parenchyma or ductal system of the major or minor salivary glands, but it most commonly affects the submandibular salivary gland. Sialolithiasis usually occurs in adults aged 30 to 60 years and causes pathognomonic pain during meals. The treatment of sialolithiasis depends on the size and location of the calculi. We present two cases of sialolithiasis of the submandibular gland managed via the intraoral and extraoral approaches, depending on the position of the calculi.

Calcification of the submandibular gland in a patient with chickenpox.

The pneumonia virus of chickenpox is now known to cause scattered calcified foci in the lungs, however to our knowledge, recent literature has not discussed calcification in the salivary glands. A 15-year-old boy consulted the department of radiology because of a swelling on the right side of the submandibular area. Radiological assessment included an ultrasonography and computerized tomography scan of the neck area, which demonstrated intraparenchymal amorph calcification, with approximately 13 mm diameter in the right submandibular gland. General condition and oral intake was good without di

Microscopy of the koala mandibular (submandibular) glands.

Koala mandibular (submandibular) glands are compound tubuloacinar glands, the secretory units of which consist only of serous cells. Intercellular canaliculi occur between the serous cells, which are continuous with a minute lumen that courses through the centre of each secretory unit. Intercalated ducts are abundant and join striated ducts, the latter being characterized by elaborate basolateral infoldings of the plasmalemma. Secretory granules within the serous cells fail to stain with either the PAS or Alcian Blue (pH 2.5) staining procedures. Ultrastructurally, the secretory granules are m

Histochemistry of sialoglycoconjugates in goat submandibular glands.

The functional properties of sialic acids appear to be manifold. Therefore, they are considered as essential components of saliva. In this study, the localization of sialoglycoconjugates in the submandibular glands of Japanese miniature (Shiba) goat was examined by light and electron microscopic histochemical methods. The submandibular glands exhibited a large amount of sialic acids. Additionally, sialic acids with O-acetyl substitutions were detectable in the mucous acinar cells and serous demilunar cells. According to lectin histochemical methods, the mucous and serous cells mainly contained

Sarcoidosis of the submandibular gland: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Submandibular gland sarcoidosis is rare and little is known about its clinical presentation besides the usual neck swelling. The aim of the study was to extract clinical knowledge on submandibular sarcoidosis from the literature. METHODS: A systematic review was performed using a search in Medline with the key-words "sarcoidosis," "submandibular," "submaxillary." RESULTS: Forty-six articles fitting the search criteria were found, whereas 31 had to be excluded because they did not report submandibular gland sarcoidosis. Twenty cases of submandibular gland sarcoidosis were consid

Coexistence of actinomycosis and sialolithiasis in the submandibular gland.

Actinomycosis of the submandibular gland is unusual. A 55-year-old male presented with a right, painless submandibular mass of four-year duration. Physical examination revealed a 4 x 3-cm mass in the submandibular region. Ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration from the lesion showed microorganisms compatible with actinomyces colonies in the glandular tissue. The diagnosis was made as actinomycosis of the right submandibular gland accompanied by sialolithiasis. The patient was treated with penicillin G (10 million U/day) for three months, followed by 3 g/day oral penicillin for six month
